No problems Bill. My wife is great when it comes to my hobbie so if I over spend a little she will be ok with it. I've gotten the budget approved by the boss and I'm just waiting to spend it. Although I did just get my bonus and I haven't told her about that yet..... Did someone say Renzetti?

Bill, have no worries, I plan to involve as many vendors as I can while doing my best to spend my way to a divorce (shouldn't be too tough). My goal is to meet and get to know as many vendors as possible and I can't think of a better way than spending some cash with them. I wish I had access to the bank's account but, unfortunately for all the vendors, I'm limited to my meager account. That

I thought it was GREAT! I've never seen a full color catalog with rodbuilding supplies so it was great to be able to check all of that out. Not to mention the great timing by Mud Hole sending it out right before the big show, very savy!! Now I have a tool to map out all of my purchases before I get there. P.S. Tom - my wife is holding you soley responsible for our divorce if I drain the ban

Thanks for the feedback guys. Would the craft store foam be able to hold up if I put something like Rod Armour over it?

Is it possible to pour a sheet of the foam about 1/4 inch thick and then cut it so that it can be wrapped around a rod blank or would a sheet that thin break apart? I primarily build surf rods and I was thinking about trying to use the foam as a replacement for cork tape but given the diameter of the surf rods I work with (and the fact that I have no tools to bore out the inside of a block) the

That is great news. I can not wait to see these blanks finally. Will you be bringing them or will they have them at the CTS booth?

I'm a newbie but ran into this problem on my first few surf rods so I will offer up what I discovered to be my problem. I found that I was doing two things that seemed to cause this. First I was putting the finish on in a spiral patern instead of brushing it across the wrap. Second, I was putting the rod on the dryer too soon after application. Once I started applying across the rod and allow

Thanks guys. I actually got two just in case the first try didn't workout. I'll try just covering with TM first and if that messes up the decal I will go with CP over it and then the TM.

I was wondering if anyone has ever used a window decal on a rod? I have a school decal that I purchased that is small enough for a surf rod but I was wondering if anyone has used something like this. The description of the decal is "This outside application decal adheres to any smooth glass, metal or plastic surface. It is removeable with a blow dryer and it is weather and fade reistant.&q

Not sure where to start with this question.... I would like to print a decal for a rod I'm building for a Christmas present and I was wondering if anyone has been using decal connection's decal paper with a color laser printer? If you have how well has it worked? Have you found that the paper takes and holds the ink well enough for the finish or have you been putting something over it like t

Couple other questions/suggestions. How quickly are you putting the rod on your dryer? let it sit while not turning for a minute and I think you will see all of your ridges go away. Before I put a rod on the dryer I let it sit for a minute, wick away the excess that collects at the bottom, turn the rod over and let it sit again for a few minutes, wick away the excess that collects on the bot

First let me say that I'm a new rod builder, only built 6 rods so far. But, with all of the positive feedback of the NGC (old and updated versions) I wanted to give it a try on my next rod. I've been reading all I can on the NGC in both the magazine and in the library and on the message board. In the information in both the magazine and the library (I think) there are graphics that show th

You could think about doing a combination of the two if you aren't worried as much about having a consistent set of either wire or SIC. I've been playing with a fly rod (5wt) and found that using two SIC stripper guides and a SIC tip provide basically as good a performance as with all SIC guides. Using only the three SIC guides and the rest wire also seemed to improve the blank performance over

Sorry guys, I just updated my profile so my email now shows. I checked out the Rainshadow hotshot blanks and like the looks of the specs (and the price) but what color is Olympic Green? They don't show that color on their site. I was really hoping to find a matte grey like the other Rainshadow surf rods. I know it is kind of picky but I have a specific pattern for all of my surf rods that I w

I am trying to find a 2 piece 8'6" blank rated to upto at least 3 oz. to use as a mullet/flounder/pompano rod in the surf. I've check out the rainshadow blanks and they only offer an 8'6" version in 1 piece. I would really like to stick with 8'6" for two reasons. I'm going to need to get some decent distances and so I don't want to go any shorter and I also want to try and make

I'm having some difficulty getting a really clean transition from my butt cap and my reel seat to my grips (split rear and front) that are finished with Rod Armor. Can someone recommend a method that would allow me to get a seamless (or at least really smooth) transition between them? I'm just using a regular rubber/vinyl butt cap and a standard Fuji trigger reel seat and they really don't mate

John, I just looked at the Sealine X rod and yes, that is a spigot type ferrule. As others have mentioned it is designed NOT to fit completely together initially so that as the male end wears down (and the female end expands a little) you will continue to get a good mating of the two sections. If you are able to get 4" of the male end into the female end then you are ready to go fishing.

John, I haven't seen a Diawa Sealine surf rod but it may have a spigot (sp?) type of ferrule. With the spigot ferrule you will more than likely not be able to mate the pieces completely as they are designed that way. How far is the male end of the rod going into the female end?

Sorry, I see it on the site now. I was looking up at the top of the list for it. I'm not sure that those are the same blanks as the ones I've got. The three rods that I already have built were made about 2-3 years ago but I just purchased the 4th one at the rod show. I looked at them last night and they appear to be the same blank with the same flex so I'm not sure if the blank listed on the

Marty, I've got 3 of these rods and I'm about to build a 4th. That is a fantastic light surf rod. I believe that those blanks are rated 1 - 3oz. (at least the blanks that I've got are) and the sweet spot is 2oz. That being said we throw up to 4oz. with that blank all of the time. I'm wondering if you some how got a different model 1145 than what I've got. They aren't listed on the Batson sit

I'm not sure what the specifics are on why this is the case but it seems that the smaller reels tend to cast farther than the larger reels. I've been to a number of long cast competitions and talked with the competitors about what reels they use and why and most of those in the open class of the competition use reels the size of the Penn 525 mag and ABU 6500's. Using these reels (which are heav

Steve, I'm a new rod builder as well (just finished my first two rods) so I thought I would give you some answers from a newbie's point of view and hopefully you can avoid the mistakes that I made. 1. I didn't find the spine on my rods. In your case I would simply use the alignment marks made by sage as the line I would place my guides. I'm wondering if sage actually put the alignment dots o
