I have some Persalls white silk that IS invisible when PG is applied , works great for repairs on blanks where you don't want the repair to be seen . Kinda' light for furrel re-enforcement on heavier rods though . Good luck , John

Rob , I usually ream untill it goes to where I want with a bit of force , but not enough that I cant get it back up the blank . After that the epoxy will lubricate the cork to slide the rest of the way with ease . The trick is to cover the blank with epoxy well above where the grip will finally come to rest before you slide the grip on . This way the entire inner cavity of the grip gets complere

Jeff , Permagloss was a tough thing to keep from hardening in the bottle for me 'till I started keeping it in the refridgerator in a Zip lock bag ( thanks to Bill B) . One thing you can do to prolong the life of a bottle is to pour what you need quickly and close the bottle (wipe the threads on the bottle ). As for your question , I have used it when it was slightly thick , but if you put too m

Paul , if your guides are preped right you will not have any damage to the rod blank . Underwraps DO NOT protect a blank in any way from poor guide prep . Have fun , John

I didn't see the Rainshadows that Cliff mentioned , looks like one of those might do it . If you can get away with a 7- 8 ft rod , I think you will have no problem finding an 8 or 9wt 9', 5 pc and dropping the butt . As long as there is enough Power left . Let me know what you choose , I'ld be interested in finding out , Thanks John

You think that will handle an 8lb bonefish ? I just looked around on some sites and didn't see too much to fit that bill , and he wants a choice of color too ................ the 3 makes me think it's a bit light , but I've only built a 782-2 . Do you have access to one to feel one before you have to buy ?

Bill , an 8 or 9 wt will handle that weight . An FT would be perfect for that , but I'm not sure if Dan has one as short as you need . I don't recall seeing any thing over a 5 or 6wt that short on any site I've looked at . You could always try a 5 pc 10 wt and drop the butt ,St Croix has one in SC4 . Not sure how much power you would loose with out that bottom section though . I think you are

Bill , I have built some spinning rods out of fly blanks for some older gents looking to throw a small bubble and fly on my gun club lake . I generaly use a 2 pc 8' or 8'6" 4 or 5 wt and nibble a bit off the tip or butt (depending on the blank) to suit there perticular needs. The guys use a very small spinning reels with 4 or 6 lb mono, the fish are in the 14-20" range. I set them up

Tim , there has been a ton of disgussion on the spiral wrap lately , more so on the new "bumper system"of guide lay-out . Try looking thru the last 2 or 3 pages of posts on the board on this subject . You can also do a search on spiral wrap and come up with a ton of stuff to get you firmilliar with the concept . The line transitions to the bottom of the rod on a conventional set-up ,

I do the same a Putter , just scoop a couple of lumps with a popsickle stick of each part and mix on a piece of scrap cardboard or somthing . I like to save all of the phony credit cards that come in junk mail and use them as mixing cards , a couple of uses and in the circular file they go . Have fun , John

One of the things that's on my agenda to do at the show is to personaly meet some of the great personalitys that I've either purchased products from or had the privledge to chat with for one reason or another . Some of the seminars will be on my list too, as well as purchasing as much "stuff" as I can get into Mikes truck if all plans go thru . Looking forward to meeting all of you .

Levi , a 9' 5 or 6wt in a 4 pc , as mentioned , will do most anything that is needed for trout fishing , from throwing streamers to nymphs and dry fly presentations . I like to use ceramic (SIC) guides on anything over 4wt , you will be able to get away with #5.5 or 6mm rings for running guides , strippers , a 16 , and a 12 will do . You may want to put a #8 in between the strippers and the runn

For fly rods I'like to use a base coat of 1 part Permagloss , then a finish coat of LS Supreme (2 part finish) regular . But I have tried the new Threadmaster finish on the last rod that I built last week , and I think I have a new 2 part finish now. The threadmaster is nice stuff , and easy to work with . Have Fun , John

The thread tension can change if CP is used on NCP thread too . I learned that the hard way after doing a butt wrap with both nylon and NCP. After I applied the CP the NCP swelled up and must have grown by a 1/8th inch , destroyed the wrap ................live and learn , one or the other , no mixing for me . Have fun , John

Keith , no , you do not need CP on metalics . You are right in not assuming things , even the most obvious things will bite you in the end if taken for granted , always double check if you aren't sure . The search will help out at times, if not , ask ! Have fun , John

I believe the sig V is also available in a gloss also , which isn't at all a very bright shine . The finish on the 5wt I built was just a bit glossy , a very nice touch to a fantastic blank , and it is 3 pc . The action is med. / fast too , just what the doctor ordered, can't go wrong with that one . Have fun , John

You thinned the finish and ruined the waterslide .............. been there done that . Acetone of all things , you may have even taken some of the finish off the blank ??????? JHD

Tom , you mentioned a TV spot for the show advertisement , where will it be seen ? Will it be on a local station , or ESPN / OLN type of format ? I could only immagine the costs of something on a national format channel , but it would get to millions that tune in to the big channels on the Sunday mornings durring the colder months . John

Bob , if you are making your jig out of wood cover the Vs cuy into the ends with felt from the craft store . The felt will protect the finish on the blank from scratches and it will create a bit of friction to hold the blank some what snug in the crotch of the stand end boards . When I used to wrap on a jig of that style I would only tension the thread and would have to be carefull to keep tens

If you want a FAST rod , the Dan Craft is that . I can not speak for your other choices other than I own a SC4 2 pc 4 wt , which is a bit slow for my liking . I'm currently building a 12wt Hook & Hackle XT51 which is a super fast blank with all the guides taped on and throwing a 400 gr ST line. Not to sure if Bob has any left , but when I got mine at the end of the summer , the price was d

Rusty , your in the ballpark with your choice , though a 7&1/2 may be a bit better . Shorter rods tend to be a bit harder to load , and lean more twards a bit slower than mod/fast , a little more flex will be more forgiving with any timing issues and let the student "feel" the line load the rod . This is my oppinion from teaching a few Scouts to cast . A lot depends on the young
