Chuck , You can underwrap anything , it just adds weight . I would immagine that any rod will be effected by the addition of weight , how much will depend on what you started with . You are looking to get a visual effectby adding an underwrap , and you are looking to keep the same "feel " or recovery on the rod , I would think that you would have to start with a "faster" act

Larry , you may also want to check out Classic Custom Wood in the sponcer column on this page . I had Ray make a couple of handles for me , they are works of art . If I remember right , Ray had some instructional down loads available for some of his stuff . Have Fun , John , NERBS

You already have the expencive stuff , it's just a matter of getting a few more of the smaller guides to put twards the top of the rod . If you have the opportunity to shop at a retailer that sells components , you should be able to return the guides not needed and get the ones you do . 40 , 25, 16 , then 12's out to the #12 top . You may have to juggle the sizes around a bit , but that's a st

Johnny , if you are talking about a fly rod , the added weight of underwraps will be even more pronounced on such a light rod , making blank recovery much slower . Lou , I have seen 1 blank sanded too much , it was a GL3 ,which I still have the sections (2 broken pieces of the tip section , 2 pc rod ) It failed about 1/2 in below a guide 20" from the top , when I was testing it before

Luis , go up to the top of the page here and look in the library at the "New concept guide primer " artical . there is nothig "wrong" with your set up , just that there is a better one . The New Concept set up is reported to give additional casting distance . Not to mention that the guides used after the line gets to the blank (running guides , the first 3 are the choke guide

If there is infact a burr or sharp edge in a bad spot on a guide foot , under wrap or not it will get to the blank . An underwrap may prolong the fracture from happening , but it will . John

When you get to the point where you can't sleep because you are thinking about what the rod you just ordered all the parts for is going to look like , it's time to seek professional help . Things like 3 dimentional butt wraps ( like the chess game on Star TRek) type of thoughts constitute a higher level of help , it will eventualy lead to OCD ........... calling and buying every color of thread

Ditto what Stan says ........ I use 2 or 3 nymphs , some shot and a good sized indicator on my FT , works like a charm in the spring when the water's up . Personally , I use Alconites or SIC on flyrods over 4wt , but the recoils are VERY light guides . Some guys complain about noise from the guides( Recoils ) , there is a bit , but It's not that bad . Snake guides are another subject .........

Lomo , underwraps are for looks , they do nothing but add weight and offer no protection to the blank from a poorly preped guide foot . I normaly don't use them , but on heavy boat rods they look good . It's purely a cosmedic feature ,and your choice to use them on not . At least that's what I've been hearing for years here . Have fun , hide the credit cards........... you'll be an addict in no

Hi Jim , try an internet search for McMasters .The're a tool and hardware distributor . Also try a search for WWGrainger , they do the same and may have the extruded aluminum . As Steve mentioned , a scrap yard will also have some different pieces of "track" , but you'll have to do some poking around if they'll let you . Have fun ............. you could always make one out of oak , i

Jeff , try to apply the Rod Bond on to the blank well above where the grip starts to contact the blank next time . As you lower the grip onto the area with the glue, the grip will still be somewhat loose on the blank , allowing the glue to cover the inside of the grip completly . A little bit of spinning as you push the grip into place will ensure complete coverage . It's a bit messy , but thur

I have thumbed thru some catalogs and found a mfg by prefix on occasion , but it's still not a guarantee . Look at Hook and Hackle's site , it sounds like one of their house blanks . Don't know who makes them for H&H , but they're nice economical rods that fish well . Good luck , John .

John , I had the same problem 2 or3 times myself a few years ago . It would happen to me in the very extreme humid wheather . I don't know if there were exessive amounts of CO2 , but I use a de-humidifier now and have eliminated the haze . I also work in a basement where it gets cold this time of year and now use a butane tourch to warm the finish if needed . The little tourch dosen't give the b

Steves tool, "McDonald's coffee stirrers" work great . Up here in the N.E. McDonald's gives coffee over the counter and strait plastic straw type stirrers . When we were traveling to Charlotte , McDonald's was a daily stop for coffee and a hand full of spatulas . They work great for a ton of little tasks . John

Mike , I have used an 1/8 inch of high build tinted with TAP out of a cup for trim rings in fly handles (small dia stuff) Got to let it cure good before trying to turn it down when it's sandwiched inbetween cork rings , or it'll make a mess . Have fun fellow NERB ! JHD

There are some generic charts on a few of the sponcor sites , Mud Hole , StCroix , and some others . The proper was is to follow the artical in the Library at the top of this page on the "Static Guide Placement Primer ". Get to there , and ask specifics after you have that done . Guide sizes will depend on knot size , which on a rod of that calibure shouldn't be that big . A# 8 or10 s

Myles , I think it was explained in detail on a previous post , but in a nut shell , it's a 4oz ,clean , new metal paint can . Fill the can with PG and seal the top , then poke a very small hole on the side , just above the bottom crimped rib of the can , and incert a sheet metal screw (or wood screw) with an eyelet on it into the hole at the bottom of the can, just above the seam . The PG will

Rob , the paint can is the way to go , untill then , you can put the jar in a ziplock in the refrigerator . To use , take it out , unzip the bag crack the cap and pour out a bit into a cup , then re-seal as fast as possible sqweezing the air out of the bag . The PG will last 5 times as long as in room temp. ................. but , get the can if you want it to last indefinetly . John D

What's Y'alls thoughts on using a Fuji TLSG10J as a bumper guide on an IMC 847 , 15lb braid , 2oz of weight. The other guides are #16 on the 0 axis and #12 on the 180 . The line path looks fine , I'm just concerned if it may be a bit light , but there dosen't seem to be a ton of pressure on it when static testing . Thanks , John

I met you all for the first time and you guys went out of youralls way to help with an order to be shipped . If I recall , the gent I talked with on the phone cleared up a potential problem with a transposed lettter designation in a guide model that saved a big headache . Thanks for taking the time to double check the order before processing it . Thanks again , John NERB
