i would slice the thread on top of the guide foot with an xacto knife and pluck out the guide... unwrap leftover threads, and use a plastic butter knife/fingernail to pluck at the bits of finish..

i used to wonder about doing the ferrule portions and some times, the grip ends ... until i met a fellow builder and saw that he used old broken blanks of various diameters to stick into the female section and chuck it ... been doing it ever since and i love it.. it has helped me to shape the eva butt grips properly, do and finish ferrule wraps... if you dont really have the correct thickness, yo

i've got to come clean.. i started using the mandrel because I read Tom's book.. i wonder if i can chuck the rat tail file into a hand drill and use it to ream the grip... probably the front of the foregrip will be reamed by hand...

ethically speaking, (i dont teach people, and in fact, I am looking for mentors) if someone wants to go into business without the know how, it is only right that he should have to probably pay something in order to learn .. it just doesnt seem right to find a mentor, take up his time, learn everything for free and later, turn around and bites the hand that fed him by competing with him in the sam

i'm also a beginner, (been doing this for years, but never had much luck on the outcome) but here goes.. 1. i've been building the handle on the rod for a while and recently switched to using a steel mandrel. i find that building on the rod, i had a problem with the rod length and trying to keep the rod centred on the rod lathe. also, when i made a mistake , i had to strip the cork off the ro

finally took the plunge and used my 1/4" mandrel to glue up and shape the cork... pretty good i must say .. now the next thing i need to worry is reaming....

Andy, i'd say that you may have to select 2 guide sizes first.. the choke guide would be the smallest guide you intend to use on the rod & one that can fit your application (line and knot can pass thru it without a hitch).... and the butt/stripper guide would be one that is at least half your reel diameter.. that's how i understand the 'New Guide Concept' article in the Library l

the rw-3l will do fine for shaping cork.. but has marc mentioned, the chuck upgrade wouldnt hurt as it's more 'steady' to me with less tendency to wobble ..(you could just buy the chuck alone, rather than the rw-3xl. i dont have access to hobby lathes, so i do the shaping on the lathe... though you will need to clean up the rw-3l prior to wrapping

my room temp is around 30-32 c in the day and perhaps 28-29 in the night.. (located at near the equator). that could be one reason why my bubbles disperse easier ?

the one additional thing i do (just recently) is to let the excess finish sag and i wick it off.. once i notice its not sagging anymore, then i start the drying motor

i made one myself with by bending 3mm acrylic into a 45 degree angle and a 30 rpm motor , using the spatula as the mixer (my mixing rod hasnt come in yet) .. it works, but like Jim said, i can mix it manually and am able to get a nice finish without bubbles too...

i'm using 30rpm .. and i've managed to get smooth level finish .. some would say that 30rpm causes the finish to climb the guide frames, especially for Fuji YSG... no issues on that one for me, since i kept the rod finish thin... i find the 6 rpm on the pac bay lathe too slow and have yet been able to find something around the 15/18rpm to check if i like the speed

i tried the hot water method for all my finishes and epoxy .. with my super classic coat, somehow , the crystals still remain even after stirring .. it worked ok for my flexcoat finish .. and the TM and LS supreme were fine the way it is .. all of the finishes were kept away from direct heat and light.. but they are about 2 plus yrs old now.. the good thing is, in my country, temp is always above

well .. mine did allow me to use the pop up bread toaster to heat and bend acrylic pieces.. plus she allowed me a whole rec room devoted to my macputer and fishing... but i digress... read on the board that epoxies dont really have a shelf life and most cases, nuking it for 10 secs each round will bring the consistency back..

i am still using my 'semi used' rod bond after 2 plus years (of which, it was doing nothing for 2 years) with no problems.. if ya worried, maybe you could try mixing up a small batch to test.. i've been wanting to put my finishes into the microwave.. but i have 2 problems.. 1. my wife wouldnt allow me to use the microwave for non food items 2. i dont have a microwave as yet.
