Hi, an update on the rattan/chair cane question. I emailed the supplier I found in th UK and he confirmed that rattan and chair cane is the same, so I ordered some. I arrived yesterday and its fine - flat on one side and slightly curved on the peel side. I found the two longest strips, soaked them in hot water for 5 min. applied outdoor (waterproof) woodworkers glue to the grip I had turned

Well I found this I guess I'll just have to try it out since there is no picture of the raw rattan on the GW webpage.

Thank you all for your replies, I know that Golden Witch carries the rattan strips - its just that it would ruin me with shipping and taxes. Within the EU I dont have to pay taxes which runs about 40 % of the total price including shipping. So I need a supplier within the EU. What is rattan ? Chair caning is referred to as stips peeled from the rattan wine - which would make it rattan - ri

I am trying to put together a rod for making very short casts using a Cortland Sylk DT 4. I would appreciate some users describing what this rod can and cannot do. Thanks

I tried to win some of the Agate strippers that GW has on @#$%& - but was constantly outbid by bids that are similar to the GW retail price or even more. I thought it would be a nice chance to get my hands on some of these at a good price but no ! What am I missing here - they are 26 $ when you buy them directly from GW - why pay more on @#$%& ???

I once asked Scott Fly Rods if I could use one of their A2 blanks to build a spinning rod. Sure, no problem they responded - but that will void the warranty !!! The reason is that it is not designed to be a spinning rod and would be more prone to breaking due to the difference in casting and - they added - people who use spinning rods often abuse their rods ??? So it would seem that there are

Hi Larry, not really - the new Wright & Mcgill rod company still offer their rods with the old style NS reel seat - I just got this old WM reel seat on @#$%& [] and I have a discontinued Struble U19 all NS reel seat - its like the U20 just all NS I've been looking everywhere but these are the only ones I've found - maybe get a custom made from Venneri or someone ?? Hi Nate, the spiral wrap guides the fishing line to the underside of the rod when using a baitcasing reel that sits on top of the rod. Like this and this Peter

Hi Larry, Mr. Eden Bromfield did a bamboo fly rod with single foot ceramic guides - a very beautifull (thats an understatement) rod I would like to add and I think the ceramics just made it so much more interesting You might want to contact him to ask if he noticed any disadvantages. Peter

Hi, I'm still toying with the idea of having someone (i.e. Chapman in the UK) build me a quadrate bamboo fly rod blank - a 7 foot 2 piece 4 wt. However I'm having trouble deciding whether to have it hollowbuild or not. What advantages and disadvantages (apart from being lighter) does the hollow blank offer and what about the strength of the blank ? Is it worth the extra cost ? The blank w

I've done this a few times using steel wool - the finest you can find - just scuff lightly until you get a satin look - this wont remove the finish just the surface. Once the rod is finished you can rub it with a very thin layer of wax to get a little more depth. But as recommended - always try on the bottom section first.

Hi Marc, I'm a little unsure what you are asking, but what you describe in the pictures I've done once with an uplocking REC reel seat - just drilled a hole in the butcap and made a small fighting but - no problem. But you need to make sure you can bore out the wood insert to the required ID. Maybe take a look at www.rec.com - they offer the cap/ring reel seat in different sizes and they can mak

I bought an old Hardy Fiberlite Perfection - the guides were seriously grooved - I've never seen anything like it. I posted a few pictures for you to see. Is this normal when you get rods in for repair or ?? The funny part is that the guy who sold it wrote "appears to have never been fished" *LOL* Thanks to Dirk Gärtner who send me some spools of the original thread I'll be abl

Hi Mo, yes that is the beauty of this place. I just received some spools of older thread for a Hardy Fibalite Perfection that I'm restoring from Dirk Gärtner in Germany - free of charge and with a smile and some good advice also. And this has been my experience with rodbuilders from this board - always offering to help others. I wish this attitude would rub of on the rest of the world ;-)

Hi Dave, thanks again - I would "break the bank" if that is what it takes to get me to the Outer Banks if the fishing is as good as you say. Would be stupid to travel half way around the world an then not do the things you dream of. As I understand it the Striped Bass is one of the finest sportsfish in the world and I would love to get a "shot" at them. I'm very comfortab

Hi, two questions - I need to choose only one fly rod for stripers - which line size should it be ? (I know absolutely nothing about fly fishing for stripers but I might get a chance to do some striper fly fishing within the next year) And - I've located some Redington NtiQ blanks - are they worth paying 135 $ a piece for or are there better options at that price ? Would be for the above mentio

Hi Robert, if you are looking for something like this you'll need white silk and some kind of finish. Also you need to be carefull not to pollute the thread with grease from your fingers as this will interfere with you wishes for a clear wrap. Next time I'll be using gloves since I run the thread through my fingers. Peter

Thanks to all of you - good answers as usual. And a great story with a good point Steve - more casting and fewer rods would be the better way to go. Peter

This rod is marketed as a Bob Clouser Signature rod. Can anyone tell me if this blank is different from the ordinary 9 foot LU 8wt and how is it different ? How would you describe this rods action and power ? And last: What makes a rod more suitable for casting clousers than others ? Thanks Peter

I just bought this sweet rod - a 7'8" 2-piece for a # 5 line - not in mint condition but the handle, winding check and inscription are in good shape and need no work other than maybe an extra layer of finish. However the rest of the rod needs new wraps, guides and some cosmetic work around the ferrules. The blank itself is in acceptable shape and I dont want to touch it - it seems to be p
