Trying to find some rattan strips in Europe. Is the rattan used for grips the same as chair cane ?

Like this [www.fredaldous.co.uk]

Chair cane is often nothing more than "twisted" brown kraft paper. It's been a mainstay in the U.S. furniture industry for years and is often referred to as ratan. But it only looks like ratan - it's paper. I wouldn't think it would work well in an environment where it would be constantly getting wet.

More likely, the ratan used on rod grips is similiar to that used for basket making. It shouldn't be too hard to locate.

Peter
The stuff you can get mabe try it on a piece of scrap blank. try a coat of thin finish and see what it looks like. Maybe you can use it, if it is cheap or free ?

The material used for chairs would be very similar. I have made a couple of caned chair seats before. You have to soak the cane in water to make it pliable to work with it. The chair cane is the shape of a flattened oval.

Thank you all for your replies,
I know that Golden Witch carries the rattan strips - its just that it would ruin me with shipping and taxes. Within the EU I dont have to pay taxes which runs about 40 % of the total price including shipping. So I need a supplier within the EU.

What is rattan ?

Chair caning is referred to as stips peeled from the rattan wine - which would make it rattan - right ?

But let me ask - the stuff you get from GW - how is the surface of the strips - the rounded surface ?

Thanks
Peter

Well I found this

I guess I'll just have to try it out since there is no picture of the raw rattan on the GW webpage.
