Thank you for your comments guys - from the number of comments I see this may not be an issue, but I'm still going to go ahead with the "sky-color" idea. CTS are looking into the possibility of making such a color - I hope they will. Maybe I'll get a small advantage :-) Peter

Inspired by the photos of the camo rod blanks I've been wondering if blank color has any importance. Lets talk fly rods. Should a saltwater fly rod (flats fishing) have a matte light blue/greyish color and should the stream rod have a camo pattern of some kind depending on the background ? When flyfishing we often come closer to the fish than when spinning or casting and blank reflections and

Thank to all of you - due to vegetation I need the rod to be 9 feet long - but I have looked at the Sig III also - either 903-5 or 904-5 because I was afraid the FT might be too stiff - I prefer a through action - not a stiff but soft tip kind of rod. I believe I'll mostly be using a 4 wt Scientific Anglers GPX WF and a Cortland DT 4 F Sylk line on this rod and I guess it should be the 904-5

Thanks John, chalkstream troutfishing only - I was hoping I could use it with lines # 3-5 for everything from tiny dries to streamers so I wouldnt have to bring more than one rod. I dont like leaving tackle in my car and I have a long drive to the stream and dont know what to use before I get there. From your describtion this rod seems to be what I need for my non-glare trout rod. I'll rememb

Hi again Bjarke, as far as I know the Ironfeather fly rods left the US market many years ago not leaving behind the best impression - it can be a difficult rod to handle. I belive they are not available in the US and therefore no one can ad an opinion about them. Someone once described the Ironfeather as a old sportscar and modern fast action fly rods as a moders sportscar - the Ironfeather is

A while back some of you ordered FT 902 blanks from Dan Craft. Have you turned these blanks into fly rods by now and if you have how did they turn out - from a fishing/casting point of view of course ? Peter

Hi Bjarke, like I told you "back home" blanks for the Ironfeather rods are not available and I dont even think the Ironfeather rods are available in the US. The Techna AV is also no longer available as blanks - the ones you bought are the rest of what is left. Peter

You guys have a great sence of humor :-) Brian just said the same as Tom without the explanation - dont wrap it isnt necessary ! Tom - thank you for a good explanation - as always :-) I still think it gonna look a little weird - I'll see if I can get a guide on each ferrule I think. Peter

I emailed CTS to ask their recommendations regarding ferrule wraps. The answer is that no ferrule wrap is needed - "We have an internal ferrule wrap at the joins which creates a very strong part of the blank" - they explained. Now the blanks have rather thick walls at the ferrules maybe due to this and I'm going to add at least a small ferrule wras for cosmetic reasons. My question

Hi, I've got an 11 foot 5 weight blank which I'm planning to turn into a 1½ hands fly rod. I've found out the guides to use (AMTAK Titans + a Fuji Titanium tip top), the reelseat is easy but the handle is giving me some trouble - how long should the front and rear handles be ? Any other "features" you would build into a rod like this ? Thanks Peter

Hi Thorleif, for the last couple of years Purefishing has been offering the Techna AV fly rod blanks to rodbuilders here in europe, but they stopped this year. There are still around - try swedich Capricorn, danish Korsholm and Go-Fishing (they all have web pages) and basically look around at the dealers in the nordic countries - most were sold rather cheap. If you need help just contact me.

Thanks for all your suggestions - I'll give them all a try and see what I like best. Joe, I got the CTS blank through the danish distributor UssingBech - special order since its an 11 foot 5 weight 4 piece. It's very well made and straight as an arrow - and because of a slight delay in delivery they send along a spare tip section. I have nothing similar to compare it to so I'd rather not

Hi, just received a CTS Affinity blank in a gloss dark green/olive color. I tried a couple of handfulls of the thread colors I had laying about but none seemed right so I would appreciate your suggestions on this. Thanks Peter

I'm going to give it a try with some unheated varnish - maybe the heat did something to the rubber. Thanks for your thoughts Bill.

Hi Bill, I was varnishing some wraps and did the rubber cork at the same time using the same varnish - the coats on the wraps dried like they should. The varnish was slightly thinned with turpentine and heated in a jar in boiling water. After removing the varnish from the rubber cork I inspected the rubber cork - no harm was done to the rubber.

I thought I would ad a touch of class to the fiberglass rod I'm building and decided to varnish (marine varnish) the end of the handle like some bamboo rodbuilders do. The handle has a slice of tapered rubber cork ring as a finish down to the handle. It looked very classy - even my wife thought so and she is just as much interested in rod building as I am in the latest fashion - and I was happy

I did that with white Pearsalls Gossamer the other day - if you use a marine varnish - thinned a little and varmed in boiling water - the silk goes completely transparent/dissapears - not what I was looking for as I wanted a faded image underneath the thread. So I'll try again with a nylon thread similar to the blank color. Peter

Thanks to all for taking the time to share your opinions and experiences. I guess I'll stick with the 4 weight for starters and then use the rod for what it is intended - shorter distances. A nice oportunity to build another 4 weight to supplement this one :-) Peter

Bill, yes I know but it still needs about 4 coats on the wraps and I'm quite simply curious what people use on this rod - if I met a guy with this rod by the stream I would ask him the same question - just out of curiousity :-) Peter

Tom, in my experience most rods are able handle more than just one length of line past the tip - some situations call for a short line others for a longer line - I have never had to change line - I just adapt my casting to the length of line. I have had a full (about 68 feet) Orvis Spring Creek DT 5 in the air with my Orvis 9 foot 5 weight full flex rod some years ago. I used a Fibatube 9 foot

A little off topic but I cant find this many Lamiglas fiberglass owners anywhere. What is, in your experience and without taking into account the CC numbers of the blank, a good line for the Lamiglas fiberglass 7'6", 4wt, 3piece blank/rod - or in other words - which line do YOU prefer for this rod ? Not so much the brand but the line weight and taper. I'm thinking of getting a DT 4 (Cortla

Thank you very much for your advice - its greatly appreciated - maybe for a lazy guy like me a normal ferrule is the best choice ;-) Peter

I found a UK rodmaker who will make a quad bamboo blank for me. Now I have to choose between a normal nickel silver ferruled blank and a spliced blank - the spliced is a little more expensive, but not much. Does the spliced type offer any advantages over a normal ferrule ? The blank is impregnated. Thanks Peter

Thanks again Steve, by stable I meant - does it loose its precision in the tip section - tracking is the right word I think ? So if the new 903-4 is as good as your FT863-4 it would be ideal for trout - from tiny dryflies on a # 3 or 4 line to heavy streamers on a # 7 line - this could be very good :-) Peter

Thanks Steve, I'm not a fan of soft tip stiff but fly rods but I suspect these blanks are a bit more advanced than just that - I was curious about the FT blanks since I saw the CC numbers when the were first entered into the CC database and I was surprised - very surprised - to se the - high - numbers. Is the tip still stable when the blank is flexed deeper by a heavier line and does the rod

Hi Dan - and others, Are you saying I can have one rod that will cast both a 3 and a 5 weight and maybe even heavier lines ? Sorry to sound stupid but I sounds a bit strange and I would like to know a little more about the idea and construction behind these rods and how they cast with the different lines. Sounds great though - one trout rod to do it all :-) Thanks Peter

Thanks Billy - so there are some differences. I'm also curious about the weight - has anyone weighed some of them ? Thanks Peter
