Answer to that is yes. What you are doing is breaking the glaise(making it water break free). This give the epoxy some tooth to hold onto. The same as when you prepare a blank for a handle or reel seat.

Sammer,When drywall tape is mentioned I believe thay are referring to the self sticking mesh style(at least thats what I use)and not the paper type that is applied with a tape gun and joint compound. If I`m wrong please correct me.

I use the masking tape method.Awhile back I seem to remember a post about the chemicals in the tack cloth possibly causing fisheyes in the finish.

The seat thread direction depends on how the fisherman holds the rod.I personally grip a spinning rod with my fingers (index and middle) around the reel putting my hand behind the reel.Threads at this location would becme irrating. Some people grip above the reel. The chioce is yours. It is truely a custom rod if you built it to your prefrence and not as the factory does.

If mine dont come a day or two after the target date it is usually a month late.Tom sent a replacement to me earlier in the year and it arrived 6 days before the 1st mailed got here(it was over a month past the target date). This was around Christmas so the non time sensative stuff took a back seat.IMO this is time sensative because I`m waiting to read the spiral wrap article before I procede a

Good people breed happy endings. It was a shame people could not see the work in person, pictures are fine but you need to feel the product the Ray produces to get the whole picture.I always assumed these handles were heavy but they are the opposite.I still havent built mine into a rod yet but the blank is finally on the way. This is one I want to make special and take some time and engineer

This thread got me thinking(set off the smoke alarm).I had a rod on the lathe with no guide installed yet so I put the reel on(Penn Int965) and tied a 2oz. sinker to the line. With the line at center spool and the rod hanging vertically I was able to transition the line to the bottom without touching the blank. This would make the line perfectly straight.however the point at which the line gets

As stated by a true gentleman.Ray ,sorry I could not attend the show.I wanted to meet you personally.Tuesday of that week I drove 1600 miles,Friday had to plow snow and do the day job,and then plow snow again after the weekend.I just didnt want to push my luck and overdo anything.Looks as though I missed a great show.Hope to be there next year. 1839. Re: Epoxy
If your epoxy was applied from the mixing cup it is possible the the uncured was taken from the side of the cup and was not mixed as well as the rest of the epoxy.

Just make sure that the edges of the tape are adhered tight to the seat with no creases.epoxy can find its way under the loose spots. After everything is set in place I carefully remove the tape in case had intrusion of epoxy under the tape and clean it up before it sets.

Same here,I actually have 3 suppliers within 5 miles miles of my home that i will use for repairs (easy to match) or something small or needed in a hurry, otherwise the suppliers at the left get the bulk of the big orders.

Hey Putter,I`m one of the ones that due to the weather and being on vaca and driving 3,000 miles the week before,(Snow committed me to plowing therefore I had had to catch up with the work missed on Friday and the backlog from vacation).I was hoping to meet the king of marbelizing and I even acquired some pearl pigment that I have added to top coats to add an interesting effect that I was going t

1845. Re: DUST
I also try to do late at night when the movements in the house cease.I have FHA heat that lowers at 11:30 so if possible I try to do it then so a heat cycle wont cause dust to fly(tyr to do when its warmer outside so heat dosent have to come up.

Mike, I have a 9 ft Diawa Interline surf rod and can count on both hands the # of times I used it.They say spinning or conventional reel but I tried every spinning reel I had and then some and after about 10 casts and retrieves the line was twisted like it was put on backwards.I even had the line wound at the tackle shop thinking I was at fault.went as far as taking a reel off another tha

Scott,That is exactly what I use them for.I have drilled out to 9/16ths however it was a little scairy feeling the bit below the surface.Key is to remove the bit often and clear out the bore.

if you are looking for foam rubber any craft or sewing store should have it.This is easy to work with if you have an electric carving knife.

Funny thing happened the other day.I recieved an e-mail from a young fellow who was interested in building rods.He found me through the directory on this site. Was alll ready to usher in a newby when I realized he was interested in building hot rods(cars).Even though I do Dabble in that field and work on cars for a living it is not a source of relaxation for me.Had to laugh...

I placed an order last week, after 5 days I was e-mailed that the order will be dalayed with no delivery date available because they were moving.I was given the option to opt out of the sale and did, letting them know it was bad business to wait 5 days to notify me(all weekdays). Then the response was the order got lost on the desk and the delay was not common but an oversight.Add insult to injury

Also dump the finish out onto foil when working. This will increase pot time and also prevent you from getting any undermixed hardner or resin that is on the side of the cup onto the rod. Most times when people use the cup they run the brush along the inside of the cup to knock off excess finish and in turn pick up unmixed resin.Putting all the above sugggestions to use should get rid of the pro

I would imagine that under heavy load it would also generate plenty of heat. The guide manufacturers spend lots of money to make a hard surface that offers the least amount of resistance and also to dissapate heat.Heat is an enemy to fishing line(hold a match to it).It would also effect the feel when a fish is being fought(was that the line on the rod or did the fish brush the line against an obs

Hank,I also feel the handle will fit better due to each ring being sized for the position on the blank. When I build on a mandrel and then ream to fit I sometimes cannot get the taper perfect and end up with a gap at the end of the grip to the blank.Due to a change in creative thinking today I removed a mandrel built grip and was surprized at how easy it was to remove because of spots that we

I hope mine dont take a month to get like the last one.The USPS is reallly slow with the bulk stuff coming into the area.I was told being it was not time sensative they ship when they have room.Aggrivates me that something I want and pay for takes a back seat to junk catalogs full of import garbage. To me this magazine is time sensative due to the fact that all the posts refering to articles and t
