Before and after photos of a friends rod that he got at 15 years old(now 47).It had some taped on guides and reel.The cork is original the seat is a replacement.He wanted the old metal ring guides,in other words "old school".it was a South Bend,The reel is next.

44. 3rd rod
looking back a few years and realized this was the 3rd rod I wrapped.Still havent done the butt wrap,too busy fishing the rod and building others(lesson learned?dont fish it until it is completely finished)

Ask your friend what method he uses. Dragging bait vs jigging is two entirely different blanks. Also water depth will make a difference. Fishing from private boat or a head boat ?

I use a spatula. Learned from the one and only Ralph O’Quinn how to do it. Faster and cleaner than a brush.

A butane or propane torch works for me . Just need to keep the distance far enough away. You can also see the flame unlike alcohol. There are models that turn off and on by pressing and holding a button and releasing it when you are dome. That is of course if propane or butane is not banned there also .
