Look at the fiberglass blanks from Anglers Roost on the left. granted they are 3 pc but for $30 they can't be beat. A decent blank and if you have an issue with them Johnny stands behind his stuff. Or look at the bargain offerings from some of the other sponsors.

the pluses. super clear, no mixing, fast drying, light weight the negatives it's thin so it will take several coats, short pot time, then there are the fumes this stuff and it's cousin Perma gloss will kill off a few brain cells if you don't have good ventilation. If i use it, just bought a new bottle yesterday, I move my dryer out to the back porch and open a few windows. The resul

we have a lot of smallmouth rivers near me with many of the sections designated as "Flies only". My go to rod, and I've built several for others in the area is an 8 1/2' 6 wt. It's not the most common length/weight blank. I've built all the ones I've done on Batson blanks.

if you want to keep that traditional look to the rod look at rattan wrapping or even bark. I've done a few out of cotton wood bark(as light as cork but with cool color) and I've seen them done with pine/fir bark from the northwest. also birch bark. custom fly grips on the left sells it.

I've used Fuji Alconites on a 9' 8wt Carp rod. I used them because i knew I would be into the backing many times and was worried about wear. I don't think I would use them if I was fishing in weather where there would be ice. snakes are easier to clear.

look at the offerings from Lemke ore REC. I like a downlocking seat but sadly most manufacturers are going to up locking with the hood hidden in the half wells grip :(

I mounted mine so that the curve was almost at the bottom of the grip and then sanded from the top. the dust dropped into the vac attachment and got sucked away. almost like the way it's set up in one of the pictures in the catalog.

I just picked up one of these over the holidays and I've done 3 grips with it and no dust to speak up. I hooked it up to a Dust deputy which runs off my shop vac. I've tried others with no results. this one works well.

part of the answer depends on what make the rod is which affects the ferrules. Chrome plated ferrules like those found on Montague and H and I are usually easier to just replace. Nickle silver Ferrules like those found on better rods such as Granger, Philipson and Heddon can either be replated or "shruken". The shrinking process takes a some skill and patience and

I've got a bunch (8 different colors) of the metallic from Pac Bay. I have yet to try it. If you want the purple to try you are welcome to it. I know I probably won't use it.

While I haven't looked to see if the blank is available I would look at the St. Croix 907-4 Bank robber. designed for streamer tossing. I've cast one when they first came out and it's really a nice rod. It has that "Punch" to throw a big fly and a weighted line.

+3 on the Bingham SHX. I bought half a dozen 7 1/2' 4 wts from Karen last year. they sold like hot cakes. I had to set one aside for myself. great blank for the price.

He's looking for a 9' 5 wt. If you are new to fly fishing i would suggest a more traditional action blank. I would also go with at least a 3 piece if not a 4. for the price difference the multi piece are just easier to handle. a 9' 5 wt is about as classic as you can get. everyone has one. i've built an a bunch of different makes. PAC Bay, Batson, Matrix, and MHX are all g

Gotta agree with Todd and Tom. the biggest mistake feel is that people want to mess around with the epoxy too much. mix according to directions. let the bubbles dissipate. apply. rotate until set/cured. if need be repeat. That's it. I've tried heating/flaming/warming/thinning etc. that's when problems arise. Someone brought in a rod this past weekend with a terrible fini

I started out by just going for it and practicing as I went. That's what those cheap Blem blanks were always for. Friends and family got a lot of rods in those early years. i still have some of my first rods. A lamiglass fly rod that I refuse to redo as it''s a reminder. the wraps are huge and not packed and the finish is just passable. Also a Fenwick spinning rod i build for Dad. If

there was some discussion on another forum about taking a 5 foot one piece BassPro Micro Lite Glass spinning rod and stripping it and rebuilding it as a 2 wt fly rod. several have done it and talk of good casting . I may be easier to find a 5 ' spinning blank that to strip and rebuild.

I've used a Dremel with a small cone shaped buffing wheel and some compound. But unless those are the only guide like that in the world you are better off just buying new. less hassle and you are sure you won't have issues with them in the future.

I would take them off your hands. I use those all the time for bamboo rod repair/restoration.

cut it and put in some really highly figured wood in there and on the ends. Or you could get some scrap Corian and turn it for accents.

And thank you American Tackle for letting custom builders use it. Now we have the ability to say to a customer "look these are the guides that are used on the Pro's rod". now they too can have the same components. A huge selling point!

Back in the day Heddon used to air brush spar varnish on all their bamboo rods. it was a special Pasche air brush and a odd formula for the varnish. From experience i can tel you that the varnish didn't last. I dip varnish all my bamboo rods and it's really not that hard. some 2"PVC pipe a few end caps and a little over a qt of varnish. I've done dozens of rods over

Shakespeare never made any of their own bamboo rods. most were made by South Bend with some also being made by Horricks and Ibbotson or Union Hardware. Yours is most likely South Bend. the Tony Accetta line was in response to other makers having a high end name attached to their rods. Kind of like having a pro fishermans name attached today. That being said there is not a ton of co
