Yep Jann's is good. I live about 45 min from them so driving down is easy. However there are times when maybe the weather stinks or it's just cheaper to pay shipping than pay for gas. I've ordered on Monday and had my stuff in a day. Several times I've called the store and gave them my order. Drove down and they have it waiting at the desk. To me that's killer service.

Anything over $150-175 is going to be hard to get for a South Bend. As a comparison I recently sold a somewhat sought after South Bend 291 in excellent condition and was hard pressed to get $300.

I've gone to using old school double edged blades. In fact Shark brand makes a half blade. About $8 for 100 on amazon.

Like Jeff I too have used Epifranes. But if you are only doing one or two Montys for fun then you could go with something more generic and easier to get. A lot of guys like Ace hardware space in the green label can or even Minwax.
To preserve I use Bloxogeyn and I decant into the varnish proof bags from Woodcraft that you can squeeze the air out of

Try the Permagloss in a very small area. I've had issues in the past of the Permagloss dissolving the old varnish. If it works great if not I would go with spar varnish, which is traditional.
Usually a 9' Monty works well a 7 wt.

Pictures would help but having seen a lot of Heddons, since the old factory is kind of close I'm going to make a guess. I'm guessing an earlier no.1 sport special

I've used epoxy for just such a glue up. Also to second John's post about the dust. I keep a squeeze bottle of water handy and try to keep the antler wet when turning. It cuts way down on the dust. Think of going to the dentist and getting a cavity drilled. You just have to remember to wipe everyting down well when you are done to prevent rust.

I'm just going to ask a few questions to maybe help with the 2 pc mystery. Is the rod 6 sided or is it round? How heavy is the rod? a rod that size should have some weight to it. It the rod is round then my guess is that it's early glass painted to look like bamboo. We all need to see pictures.

Many times a bamboo rod will feel different to two different people. the same rod may cast a 6 wt for me but you may feel it needs a 7. the easiest thing to do is to see if your local fly shop(there are still a few of those around ,right?) has a few different lines you can try. Having cast a lot on Montys my guess is that you are looking at a 7 wt or even an 8 wt due to it

Bill, much of the reason that the rod twists is because of the way it is made.
Let's compare a small one or two person shop putting out maybe 50 rods a year tops to one putting out 500 rods a week.
the small shop will take the time to make sure that the blank is striaight after glueing and binding. it's an easy 5 min process and yes it eliminates many problems later

Yep the technique Ken offered works also. If you're really brave and feel lucky you can do it over the burner of your gas stove. Don't try it on your first outing.

You have two choices here. Fix it right or hang it on the wall. Moving the guide over will only make things worse.
taking the twist out is fairly easy.
1. determine where the twist starts. i.e. is it just between a guide or is it longer.
2. you need to gently heat the entire area that is twisted. use a heat gun on low if you have one or a hair dryer. gently heat the areakeep t

87. short CP rod
I know it's monday after the show and everyone is still coming back or on overload but here goes.
I've got a guy who wants a 10' Center pin rod. I know where he fishes and can see his reasoning.
sinice I can't find any manufacturers that make one that short her is my thought.
use a 10' fly rod blank. looking at the numbers and diamensions of a 13' CP blank and converting to a

Phil, I felt that Bill implied that there was more to building a rod from a blank than there actually is if one were to start with a premade blank and prehaps dissuaded the posters idea of building a babmoo rod.

Bill B, what Michael is talking about is assembling a rod on a bamboo blank not actually building one. It is no different that any one of us buying a graphite blank and assembling it with our choice of compents.
When one actually starts from scratch with a clum of bamboo, splits then planes the taper and does all the other steps to make the blank and final rod can we say they ar

got to agree with the "grip is the biggest concern" statements. I just replaced two grips on rods for a guy. he bought a pair of factory rids with split grips. after 1 season he said he wanted them changed as they were causing hand cramps for him. easy fix and he is happy.
