7wt Streamer Rod
Posted by: Brendan Cardiff (---.ed.shawcable.net)

Hi fellow rods builders,

I am looking to build a 7wt streamer rod for trout. I like throwing articulated streamers. I currently have a Winston 9'6" B3X and I find it is just not quite punchy enough. I am looking for suggestions on what blank to buy.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Brendan

Brendan - I do a bit of that type of fishing in the winter, large flies, sinktip or full sink lines, mainly from a boat. What size flies are you throwing? The lightest rod I do that with is an 8wt. I mention this because you mentioned "punch", and even the punchiest 7wt will not handle the flies I throw. Currently I'm using the following:
8wt 1pc MHX
8wt 2pc MHX
various 9wts, but partial to Orvis Helios 2 4pc
10wt 1pc MHX
6/7 Meiser 909 (9'9") two-handed overhead rod (comarable in power to a 9 or 10 wt).

The MHX rods are very fast, "punchy", and handle the sinking lines / tips very well. Very impressed with those rods for streamer fishing. And they are light.
All the rods listed above handle streamers very well, and are used according to the size of fly I'm throwing. If you're set on a 7, the 9', 9'6" MHX are great.
Best of luck.

Brendan,
I have the following in stock if you wish to talk:

[ctsfishing.com]

It is a fast action, Affinity-X, 7wt, 9'6", 4pc in raw carbon.

Herb

Hi Bryan and Herb, I have never heard of either MHX or CTS rods. I will have to check them out and do some research.

Thanks for your advice.

Brendan,
You should consider a Sage Bass II #230-4
It's only an 8 footer but has plenty of power throwing an 8 weight.
Should be capable of a 7 or 9 weight to help in throwing heavier flies.

While I haven't looked to see if the blank is available I would look at the St. Croix 907-4 Bank robber. designed for streamer tossing. I've cast one when they first came out and it's really a nice rod. It has that "Punch" to throw a big fly and a weighted line.

what ever rod you end up building the 7 WT is a little light for what you want , if the streamers the size need is a 8 WT if not a 9 WT
the 9 WT would do a supper job I for you I think

What size hook is going to be used?
How long is fly?
Articulated flys are pretty wind resistant. You MAY need at least a #8 as Bill and Bryan said.

Well known and talented fly casters use a 7wt. rod to cast 300 grain full sinking lines with large flies. Check a recent discussion on Dan Blanton's bulletin board. What line to use depends as much upon the caster as the rod that's doing the casting.

Who cares what some one else is doing What streamer is he trying to cast How big is it and HOW MUCH does it weigh WHEN WET

He may just be better LIKE SAID with a 8 wt fast rod

Or cast smaller streamers the rod will cast

I use the Rio Streamer tip line, and the flies I like are about 5" long, tied with a long fiber chenille body with marabou tails (essentially an articulated wolly bugger). I am thinking an 8wt might be the way to go.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Brendan
