Hi Steve, I'm in the middle of the left pond. On the serious side, our 5896 is a close match in nylon. We do carry 5896 in nylon and Perma Color (NCP). There is a person in the UK who desires to purchase Makoi thread. If that's your area, perhaps a combined shipment is doable. I should have been on the road about 5 minutes ago and need to be brief. About a decade ago I was advised by Tommy Tape that it was also available at Home Depot under the name Stretch and Seal. You will typically find it in the plumbing department. Similar tapes might also be available from your local hardware store. Our local hardware store carries a similar tape in variety colors. I have found it necessary to finish each end of a wrap with electrical tape. On one

Hi Ed, I have about 100 medium spools of Makoi nylon size C black thread in stock. I am out of the Perma Color (NCP) thread in black size C. Our sizes are close to the Gudebrod sizes. Medium spool of size of C nylon = approx 600 yards Medium spool of size of C Perma Color = approx 450 yards Medium spool of size D nylon = approx 450 yards

Mark, I have Lamiglas kayak outriggers. They are telescopic, 2 piece, 10', and a line rating of 25 lbs. I am not sure how they would work for your application. If interested, contact me after 4/21/2015. Thank you, Don

Hi Folks, Thank you for the kind comments. Marc, When I first made my selections, I decided it would be best to follow the Gudebrod sizes. This was to minimize the impact to people when switching to Makoi thread. The D nylon will be smaller in diameter than D Perma Color (NCP). If you need a thicker nylon in black, I do have some medium spools in size E. Thank you, Don

"I will use a light low profile reel such as a Chronarch K" Instead of trying to correct a line control issue, why not reduce a part of the problem. Daiwa introduced a low profile reel with a T-Wing guide for the level wind. It drops and opens the area for line flow. This reduces the angle between the level wind guide and line made to the spool. This should reduce any line issues by

To me that is just asking for a problem with the wraps and finish on them. As I thought that I pointed out, it was a personal decision based on ease of future replacement of guides. Hi Randolph, I have a dremel tool. My hands are big, old, and clumsy. 95% of the use of the dremel tool is to break in fishing reel bearings. What grit disks are you using with the dremel tool and are you getting any polish to the finish? Sears does sell belts up to 400 grit. I have seen posts stating 180 grit as satisfactory to polish stainless steel. Thank you for the reminder about sa

Hi Bill, The difference in time is minimal. I will take things to the next level when time permits. For now, I will continue to ensure good epoxy penetration into the thread and around the guides. My next builds will be tournament rods initially and used as fishing rods later. They should not be critical for corrosion. For the long term I will probably buy a 1" wide x 30" b

It seems that we occasionally have people asking about the white in the finish. CP could certainly be a contributing factor. Bill, I take it that you are addressing me. Does it take more time? No. Would a person rather straighten the guide feet or wrap them on a little crooked. I have always found it easier to wrap guides that properly fit to the blank. On a 14' surf rods with 8 gu

Hi Frank, I was rushed in writing the previous message and needed to make clerical corrections (<>). My responses to you need clarification. The video does point out that polishing does not last indefinitely and needs to be repeated or sealed. This is in the last part of their video and it plugs their treatment. Basically they said that product X would last for about one year, whil

From the article: " Also, type 304 is less brittle and preferred where there are shock loads" If both SS316 and SS304 are similar in corrosion, wouldn't the one more subject to the development <of> stress cracks be the inferior product? Jim, I apologize for inferring it was your statement. That part was poorly written. Frank, The video does point out that polishing does

If we can put some of the issues/facts together. 1. SS316 is less corrosion resistant in a harsh environment (?) 2. SS304 better withstands high stress situations As mentioned, a better quality guide may be one that is a polished SS304 and has sweeping curves to accommodate the flexing of the guide. If we observe the legs of the Fuji MN/LN guides, it appears they allow for the guides require

Previously a thread addressed filing of guide feet and any adverse effects. For me, the background pieces came together one at a time. Some time ago an acquaintance and I discussed the polishing of stainless steel, metal migration, and the filling of minute voids. At a later date, Fuji shifted from making the CMNAG guides (chrome plated) to MNAG guides (polished). Although I have not ha

Regarding the reels, I do realize there are various metals used. The composition of cross bars, end plates, handles, and reel foot vary from reel to reel. The reel I checked definitely had a stainless steel foot and I suspect the fasteners were stainless steel. I did not want to address wrapping guides, but it does need to be discussed. This may be controversial to some and could also damage

The findings for my product are subjective as I have no standards to go by. Good = no magnetic attraction, Marginal = some minor attraction, Poor = able to lift a part of the item (one end), Bad = able to lift the entire item. I checked about 200 items. About 10% fell into the good category, 40% Marginal, 35% Poor, and 15% Bad. The above is simply a guess as they were split into two stacks

Hey Michael, Regarding the stainless steel testing, I paid a very high price to find a quick check. What may be sold as stainless steel suitable for marine use may not be the quality or makeup that you would expect. I did purchase parts that were supposed to be stainless steel for marine use. Breakage started happening and shops returned unused merchandise. Most of the parts were stored
