David, You might want to give Lamiglas a call and see if they have any of the NZ series blanks left. Here's what they are like:

Hi David, The following are only spool size designations. 521 = 100 yard spool 524 = 1 ounce spool 519 = 4 ounce spool It is my understanding that they could be for any size or type of thread. <edit> The Gudebrod catalog lists 524 as being a Pro spool. Also listed is Trimar as being in gold tone and silver tone in size C. My green/black is listed as a metallic and is s

The only time that I have had a problem with rust was when I used inexpensive guides on a test blank. Later I used the rod for fishing and a guide rusted through the frame's ring section that holds the guide. I do not use CP. "I know I am going to use titanium alloy guides on at least two of the renovations. Didn't want to invest that much, but it might be money well spent. "

Lamiglas has a cross reference on their website that lists a large number of their blanks. Regarding Daiwa, I believe about three years ago a part of their blanks were made in Korea.

Jessse, I am NOT a kayak fisherman, so my comments will be basic. "To switch the line from one side of the kayak to the other it has to be passed in front of the bow of the kayak rod needs to be at least 6ft to do this." It should be possible to pass the rod under the kayak. "no out riggers on kayak" I assisted Danford (Pacific Ocean Producers AKA POP) in designing

Andrew, My bad. I should have said heavy tapered leader. I can not take credit for this idea as several people have asked for the product. The need was for bait casting and plug/stick bait fishing. Randolph, I have a couple of long distance fishing rods by Kilwell, They are 14', made with leading technology, have a 60/40 split and have a reverse taper ferrule. They have good distance ca

Hi Andrew, Although the handle may seem rigid, it should flex. This is to help protect the tip section when the fish is near a boat and there is a tendency to high stick the rod. Masking tape should not be used with Ulua rods. It is a wood product, will get wet, will expand and will separate. If your grips are properly prepared, they should slide uperward onto the handle using epoxy as a lu

If the handle has a reverse taper it may be that you have a butt join blank. Is the tip/handle ratio about 70/30 or greater? If it is a butt join blank, the reel seat is at the top of the handle and reinforces the female section of the ferrule. A second way to build this blank is to have the upper grip also on the handle. In this case the upper edge of the grip is even with the top of th

The Winn grips are EVA with a poly cover. Per the manufacturer, they can be adjusted to fit using <sand> paper. The mfr does have an instruction video. Perhaps it is on YouTube. If not the US HQ is in Los Angles and should be able to provide the help you are seeking.

A similar type of guide was developed for ulua fishing and they are still in use. The main feature is their durability. They are made of either stainless steel or titanium. Here's what a tackle shop has to say: "The original "Hilo Guides" were introduced to Hawai'i in the 1940's by Sumie Tokunaga, founder of S. Tokunaga Store. These flexible, durable stainless guides were desig

Buzz, Usually we look for a little more information. One piece or 2 piece ? What is the split ? 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 Lure rating 16 ounce. What is the range ? Will it be expected to cast 16 ounce lures or bait cast 16 ounces ? What is the size reel and line test ? And what is the action ? Size shock leader/rub line ? This all plays a part in establishing guide size and s

Hi Chad, To answer your questions. 1. All are the colors in stock? Yes, And a couple more not shown. About two weeks ago I received in a new shipment that brings up our stock level to prevent us from depleting colors. In addition, many colors are available in size C. I really need to update my website as it does not show our braid offering. The braid displayed does not meet the quality of

Keith, I believe you have an understanding of what happens as people demand lighter and higher performance rods. It is my endeavor to ensure rods/blanks meet expectations prior to selling them. I lost count of the number of rods that I broke and quit counting after 10. They all broke casting within the rated line and lure limits. One company had a break a few inches above the ferrule, a few i

This is another write up by Nev. It document how cropping a blank impact dead lift capabilities. Cropping Blanks I mentioned in one of the other posts a couple of days ago about the effects of cropping. I had noticed a while back that shortening blanks could result in some spectacular failures. Most of the experienced rods builders would be familiar with the fact that shortening a blank wo

I’m sure most of the seasoned builders already know this stuff so this is more for the guys trying to figure out some of the black art tricks for

Hi Roger, Have I ever cut down a blank? Once in 1981. At the time it was the practice to cut 2" off the tip of a Fenwick 16810 and use the piece to make a bell holder. The finished rod never failed. I thought the link would provide all the necessary information to clearly demonstrate the issues with cutting a blank. It identified load failures before and after making cuts. It also demo

The key to the problem may be "he went home and did some casting and then tied off ". There are a lot of people who are lacking in casting skills. We usually consider high sticking to occur when a fish is being landed. However, the same effect can occur during a cast when the lead/sinker travels inside the tip (meaning the angle between the rod and line is less than 90 degrees). Bre

Hi Robin, There are some blanks that may meet your need. You do need to talk with your friend and determine how he intends to use the rod both off shore and in the surf. If you can find them, the Lamiglas NZ 108 2XH (40-60 lb) and NZ 108 2XXH (60 to 100 lb) may meet your need. These blanks work well for jigging and popping from boat and heavy plugging from shore. These blanks were discont

Here are a couple of general guide lines for a 2 piece conventional 13' surf rod: First, establish the length of the handle. It is determined by your physical size, strength, and size of sinker + size of bait. This should be another topic. Your reel seat is then mounted down locking. If desired the reel could be attached to the rod with coasters for testing purposes. The butt guide sho
