What ever length you decide on, keep in mind that the motors, pulleys, headstock and chuck will take close to a foot of your bed.

If you are making long rods, I would consider adding to the bed length with a couple of additional pieces and a couple of additional rod supports.

Soak the bearings in a jar or bottle with a few inches of paint thinner covering them for a few days...swirl them around a couple of times a day...you will be surprised how much lube is in them. When they are clean, soak them a few hours in Marvel or 3 in 1 oil then stand them on edge to drain.

A good dryer speed is in the area of 10 RPM. It will be difficult to get a sewing machine motor to run that slow without overheating. Check out Ross is a great guy and stocks rodbuilding equipment and accessories. You can also do a search here...there is a lot of info on drying motors/equipment. Good luck...

Supports are half inch square stock...base is a half inch thick, 2 inches wide, 5 inches long...rollers were machined out of quarter inch flat stock.

Thanks for the kind words Greg. I found the base at a local junkyard. You can see it on the makers web site item # 1530. The chuck is a Taig self-centering, drying motor and rheostat were purchased from the sponsors here. Everything else was made at home.

I use the 50 cal. round lead balls...works great and really cheap if you forget to clean one up.

Ken...I have not had the chance to examine the "upgraded chucks"...Do you think the assembly itself could support the weight of a Taig self-centering chuck ?

I have a couple of All Star 1085-2 that are spiral wrapped. They are used mainly for throwing large plugs and jig heads up to 3 ounces for stripers...the casting distance is same as the same rod in a spinning set-up. I am almost finished with a All Star 1387 spiral wrapped...it test very good too. The one thing I have a concern with a spiral wrap on a heavy surf rod is the tip top. I have looked

They appear to be the hardware for fly rod reel seats ...you furnish or make the insert.

All Star lists the blank at 2 - 4 ounces...the ones that I have built max out at about 5 ounces...

I started with a size 25...then a couple of 20's....then 16's to the tip...I also used a 16 tip.

Thanks for the compliment. I made the pulleys from a piece of inch thick aluminum plate. Another good source for large pulleys that work very well is old exercise equipment. Most of the pulleys are well made but the hole may not be centered...any machine shop can true the center hole for you.

No alternatives yet....but there are still a few All Star 1267 blanks around.

The Rainshadow 1267's that I have built are closer in feel and action to the All Star 1266 than the All Star 1267.

You will also have trouble with sewing machine motors over-heating trying to maintain a low rpm while under load. A low-rpm brushless motor is a cheap and trouble free fix.

Greetings Scott...both are good blanks for the weight you want to use. The discontinued All Star blanks had several that would also fit your needs. You might consider going with a 2 piece blank if transporting would be easier...it is also easier to sell a long 2 piece than a one piece. Fishsticks4u.com, a sponsor here, is located in your area...great guys to work with.
