Some knobs are pressed on and some have a screw holding it on. Look for a small pop-out plug on the knob - screw will be located under it. If no screw is found it will be a lot of work to change knobs. Pressed on knobs have to be cut off, a new mounting shaft machined and figure out a way to mount it to the reel handle and the knob to it. Here's a photo of one I made.

I used metallic silver with both alternating bands and single strands of orange thread - Pac Bay has a orange that matches the blank perfectly.

I wrapped mine with black thread and used metallic blue as trim bands/highlights---turned out real nice.

Wet part of the thread with alcohol and go from wet thread to dry thread in a slow motion---it will clean any residue off the blank.

Holding a piece of thread at a angle while the rods turns is a great way to tidy up the edges of a wrap

The white " tubes " are PVC pipe fittings with some type of craft foam attached to it with the slots sliced with a razor blade to make a " thread holder ". Also, the white tubes appear to be held in place by pieces of foam wedged between it and the blank.

Replace your plastic or nylon washers with teflon washers---also make sure the metal washers do not have any burrs or rough spots on them. A good source for springs are the ones used in faucets.

Make a couple of winds with masking tape then turn the tape inside out and make a few more winds with the sticky side out--kind of like double-sided tape--this will hold your rod in the chuck.

Nothing makes a smoother finish than a surface finishing bit for a milling machine---just run it as fast as your drill press will go--be extra careful with your fingers.

Your choice of a reel might also include the consideration of line retrieve rates, especially when targeting Spanish Macks.

You can remove the jaws of the chuck and have them machined down a little so that they will grip a larger diameter rod. The jaws can also be reversed--that will help hold a slightly larger rod.

You can purchase the chuck from Renzetti or Taig Tools. It is also available in a 4-jaw version from Taig Tools.

The Team Daiwa rods that I have repaired or redone completely are sort of a 2 piece rod. The blank is glued to the inside of a independent grip and reel seat assembley. Almost like a flipping stick that you can't get apart. It takes a lot of time and work to replace the eva or cork grips.

It might be cheaper just to have a new shaft made with the correct threads. Cutting threads on a lathe is a slow process. Anyone know if you can take the headstock apart without messing it up ?

A threaded adaptor is easy to make---take 3/4 x 16 bolt, drill a hole in it and thread it for 1/2--makes the Taig chuck look like a factory fit.

I was at Griffin's today looking for more base material---found a lot that had already been torched. The pieces were all 3 foot or less with one or both ends melted. Most of time, the better aluminum is in the demolition dumpsters on the left side of the front scale house. The 8020 part number is 1530--they also have a lot of odd lengths on the @#$%& site store. I will post a "aluminum updat
