It's a basic question and don't feel bad for asking. as others have said, but probably more accurately stated, the connection method is designed into the blank these days. blanks are designed often with tip over butt ferrules, as one example. the ends just slip into each other. another method is called a spigot ferrule. either way, you don't need to buy a separate ferrule unless you're creating a

I looked through the list of sponsors to the left and as you perhaps found, nobody lists what you are searching for. there are possibilities, none of which are suppliers so I may send you an email for what I've found. The sources I will send are mainly suppliers for fly rods, generally focused on high quality. If you do not need top level there may be some good options listed. eric fresno, ca

U-40's Rod Bond is designed for fishing rod component assembly. Works great. No need to search for other options, it's right there for your needs. Now I would guess that you should anodize first, then scuff, then assemble. eric fresno, ca.

Just curious Patrick, when applying the finish (and i think you mean Thread-Master, not Thread-Maker, no?), did you start at the tip or the butt end? if you started at the tip, it takes a long time to reach the butt end on a 12 foot rod. this doesn't help you now, but next time, try mixing up two batches of finish. one for each half. and don't mix up the second batch until you've completely appli

you may want to replace both ferrules. there are sources for the many ferrule types used on bamboo fly rods over the years, i have one business in mind but won't name it because they are not a sponsor and i do not want to cross any lines here (though it is a specialized market). and not knowing when it was made, it's tough to determine what kind of glue was used, and even then it would be a guess

I probably couldn't describe the action in correct terms. I have a 7'6" 4 piece for 3/4 line, and a 7' 2 piece for 3/4 line that i've fished. We've had drought conditions here in California for years so it's been awhile. They are not the type of blank that flexes deeply. But i don't think i'd call them a fast tip action either. i imagine the catelogs/listings might have had them described as

Are these the Sevier fly blanks, often called Tiger-Eye? those had a unique golden brown coloration to them and were low to moderate in the price range. the ones I bought were generally under $50 for trout sized fly blanks. eric fresno, ca.

You might ask him what kind of fishing he does though I'm thinking small streams with that size. You should try the Phenix and offer a report later! :) I too would suggest a fiberglass blank. and is he firm on a 7' 3wt? lot's of 7'6 3wts. I wrapped a 7' 2 piece 3/4wt on a "Tiger-eye" graphite blank years ago and it's still one of my favorites though no longer made. That St Croix SC III

lol ryan.... yes, Mudhole seemingly has a huge stock of items a rodbuilder would need but there are others too which should be considered. they may not have everything in stock for everyone all of the time, but they might have everything YOU need ready to ship and some like Utmost can get it asap if not in stock. Since you're just beginning, Mudhole might be just the answer. Once you get some

Sorry, I do not have experience with that blank though i do have a 9'6" 7 wt RX8. As another possible option, Pacific Bay offers their "new" Quickline. the Quickline 9' 4weight is listed at 1.3 oz vs the new Batson Revelation 9' 4wt at 1.6 oz. Not sure what the Batson RX8 was listed as (discontinued, right?). eric fresno, ca.

Well Todd, if you don't get any direct help from the highly knowledgeable people here, this is my chance to help as best as I can. I fly fish, wrap my own rods, and I'm located less than an hour south of you. Let me know if I can be of any assistance. I'd be willing to meet up somewhere, even in Merced. Feel free to email me directly. eric fresno, ca.

It could go either way for the blanks. If i were to kick the bucket right now, and someone went through my closet, they would find a bamboo blank partially assembled, no notation of taper or that it's hollow-built from a US maker, various unmarked graphite blanks all bought on closeout and/or/were hinted at to be the same as somewhat-heralded models but just unmarked, great deals on fine performi

Terry posted a nice option using foil wrapping a shallow dish. I do something similar, but eliminate the shallow dish and just use heavy weight foil with the edges turned over/rolled to create a dam on all edges. But this technique of ours is for the secondary stage of application (following the mixing of the finish). Steve was asking about the first, mixing stage. And like John from Flex Coat st

let me take a stab at #3... i could be wrong of course but i believe the insides of those cans are coated to help preserve the food. If true, not a good thing for thread finish. For bargain hunting, in the past I've used those small translucent plastic ketchup tub containers found at some fast food places once or twice, and i've bought a pack of similar translucent cups from smart and final and u

Sandy, Yeah, a stripper guide at 4 inches in front of the cork grip sounds really odd to me. The first guide, the stripper, is usually about the length it would take to reach out with your arm and hand to grab the fly line from a relaxed position. for me that's about 28-30 inches from the grip if i remember correctly. being a 10wt blank should not change that relative position of the first st

Use an adhesive to apply the butt cap to the end of the reel seat. They usually come separated like you found. Some of the adhesives used in wrapping rods include U-40's Rod Bond or Flex Coat's Rod Builder's Epoxy Glue (so it sounds like what you have will work just fine). 2-part built-in plunger style Devcon epoxy available at hardware stors, even auto stores (i think also walmart/target/etc) is

What is the intended fishing conditions and species of fish? I just wrapped my fourth RX6 in the 7'-6" size, 4 piece for 4wt line (you could fish it with a 5wt line). Very good with roll casting, which made it great for my 10 year old daughter way back when. And quite frankly, it's great for mature fisher-peoples too. I love it. It's not quite what you're asking for in size but I think you s

Assuming they are the same blank but one is just cut shorter, perhaps the manufacturer cut from the butt end. that's a big assumption in the first place. I would like to think the manufacturer designed each blank to it's own taper and specs, including those only 6 inches apart in overall length. I would do as Ross suggested. eric fresno, ca.

Good points from Ken. But i don't have those issues. Careful prep of bonding surfaces should be standard practice. I can be lazy at times but I haven't had a cap fail. I have heard of a down-locking screw seat having that problem... but i think a screw style seat places more pressure against the cap than a simply cap and ring style. And even though I fish in an area with tons of granite (the Sie

By "prepping" i believe Curtis means using some type of abrasive material to roughen up the small contact surface before you glue together, this will insure best adhesion. i use a small piece of those dark green scotch scouring pads. Here are my steps. I always test fit the reel seat to the blank and ream out the cork grip and fit everything together first. then I usually glue the ca

And those opinions and conjecture are supported by decades of (mis?)information. It's a tough, endless battle. One thing I DO know, I am equally, nay, GLORIOUSLY unsuccessful, getting skunked when built-on, opposite or disregarding the location of guides in relation to the effective spine. :) (i'm just truly amazed that nobody has referred to it inaccurately as the spline. whew!) eric f

Ok, don't use a burrito, fried or regular style (i wasn't hungry anyway) Randolph has it right. Even the first part he alludes to if you read between the lines. There's no need to purchase a "spine finder." See FAQ starting with #2: Keep in mind that you test each section individually. "The OUTSIDE of this curve is referred to as the "effective spine" and shoul

First thing, as others mentioned, it would be nice to support the sponsors to the left for supplies. I believe that would help Tom continue running this web site. second, a good inexpensive blank is the Batson RX6. I've wrapped a couple with their 7'6' 4 piece 4wt blank and it really fishes well, particularly well with roll casts. and the blue is a nice color. i have no experience with their 9
