good point Tom. Also, I think some bamboo makers will create a slightly different taper on the tip for a different action. as for graphite rods, a second tip can be useful. Both rods I have broken were broken in the tip section. A second tip can help you keep fishing that day. eric fresno, ca.

I have a one-piece 7 foot fly rod. It's a pain trying to travel with it, but barely manageable. My thought: Never again! eric fresno, ca.

from the replies, and how i see it, it's neither bad form nor poor taste. alignment dots sound like a great idea. but like hook keepers, i've outgrown them quickly. i believe it's more functional to align the section using the guides. I work with fly rods, generally 9 feet in length. (re: hook keepers, i find it easier, faster and more efficient to wrap the line around the reel foot and back u

I come from the world of fly rods. With the availability of high quality cork, or lack thereof, and increased price for what is available, a carbon fiber grip can also add a very nice aesthetic value too if your supply of cork is substandard. eric fresno, ca.

Do you get satisfaction from making and hand tying your own jigs? if so, you'll probably get a ton of satisfaction from wrapping your own rods the way you want. I've never taken a class and yet i've wrapped at least a dozen rods so far, for myself and friends. i relied on tom's book, plus one other. No online videos or DVDs. The rods catch fish. I like doing it. It's fun. Now i tie my own flie

Dennis, It would be helpful to add more information like what type of rod is a Helios 2, the style of fishing you want to do, the species, the conditions, etc. From my personal "knowledge-base," the Helios 2 is a fly blank offered by Orvis, not everyone knows that or has followed past posts. For me, there is no such thing as having only one fly rod. :) if it was me, i'd decide w

As others have mentioned, a 5 weight is the standard which can handle a small range outside of what's written on the blank. but i think a 5 weight is the "standard" if someone wants only one rod. if the guy really takes to fly fishing, he's going to want to explore catching several species in various situations. i use a moderate-fast 9' 6 weight for trout in rivers and sink tip lines

Dang, you're good! :) i was imagining something i've seen in the past but yes, your finish looks good. i wonder about the entrance to the "tunnel" area, is there space there without finish where the guide foot first meets the blank? eric fresno, ca.

what exactly makes a "decent" photo of the entire rod by your definition and how do yours fall short? using a wide angle lens helps, but if you're not careful, it may have some distortion. people will ask, hey, how come it's bent at the end(s)?! a photo showing the entire rod is useful, but it's limited too. detail shots really show off the rod. in my mind, an overall shot of the rod

After reaming i just blow through the grip to remove anything inside. For the outside, i might use a slightly damp paper towel. Nothing more. And I do not coat the grip with anything else. I like the feel of cork, no need to cover that up. eric fresno, ca.

I wrapped an 9'-6" 8wt bass rod on an RX7 blank years ago using a Pac Bay Channel Lock reel seat (CL8) with the F2M-T fighting butt. I also wrapped a 9' 7wt with an RX6. That RX6 should be fine, though i generally prefer my RX7. Will you be fishing in wind on that lake? maybe something faster than an RX6 would be best. I went conventional snake guides. Here's an opportunity to try out Minima

Eliseu, What kind of thread finish are you using? good info already posted. I use threadmaster lite and apply two coats using a strip of cut plastic card, not a brush. i create 2-3 strips of varying width. the first coat is thin enough to see and feel the individual threads when dry to the touch. the second coat is the same but finishes up smooth. i have used the method of applying heat

I do as Bob Jumper does. I cut my mesh tape in half length-wise. less weight. and thanks to John E. Powell's links, i can identify the arbors i have used as the Flex-Coat arbors. Very easy to ream out. eric fresno, ca.

i've used those light color hard foam arbors (?) when there was a wide gap between the reel seat and blank. i use the mesh for smaller gaps. i think if you were intent on using the mesh, i would apply paste like adhesive (i use rod bond) after a couple of turns of the mesh, building it up as i completed the wrap. i'm just not sure how it would turn out in the long run with mesh in your case

you could also just use a turkey baster and coat the rod as it's vertical. not that i've done it but i've followed a ton of threads on bamboo forums over the years. some even wipe on with their fingers and then let hang. i don't understand your comment that varnish dries too fast. my understanding is it dries slow, taking days or weeks to fully cure. not sure about the urethanes. there are als

is it a blond bamboo or flamed medium or dark? should look cool with orange. are you going traditional with silk or nylon thread? color preserved? color choices are very personal. i would go minimalist and use white, color preserved white with no CP on the orange. maybe even black. some type of red would keep it in the same spectrum as the orange. eric fresno, ca.
