you people are doing it all wrong!!!! it's 1.5x the diameter!!! (joking) PS, joking about doing it wrong. i really do use 1.5x on my trout fly rods. which is what i decided upon a few years ago i think, others do the same. it's an equal mix of the minimum + what looks aesthetically pleasing to my eye. in this case form equals function. eric fresno, ca.

i was going to mention fiberglass too as an option. there are many sources these days of modern fiberglass fly blanks, some in the premium category including the CTS Quartz. eric fresno, ca.

Larry, from a google search, Y100A-CA appears to be Pacific Bay's regular nylon thread. it is not their Stay True thread, so there should be a translucence to it assuming you used it alone and not with some type of color preserver. one thing i would suggest is not use bamboo skewers. they are so small in diameter it would not approximate the look of a rod blank well, and because of its small

i think either would look pretty cool. it depends on your sense of aesthetic. the gold would have a warmer glow, the silver a nice cool glow. try test wraps on the portion of the blank which will be hidden once you install the grip. if you don't have the time to apply a coat of finish or don't want to waste it, i think soaking the threads in water would give a good estimate. eric fresno, ca.

Tom, I know with Sage fly rods, i simply called them when wrapping an XP for a buddy. they provided the gudebrod color over the phone. eric fresno, ca.

Downloadable PDFs are great, but these days, video is what people are used to using and seeing. And video really helps in relaying the how-to information. Once a source passes your criteria in quality and with permission of course, you could embed their youtube videos onto your pages just as Jimmy said. eric fresno, ca.

Wow, Raymond, that is a great collection of information. Unfortunately, it's the first time i have seen it. Googling "rod building tutorial," your site comes up first. I don't consider Facebook to be taking away from the traffic. Youtube videos perhaps. To your question, I don't think its lost its usefulness at all. How have you pushed out the word? If you haven't yet, or even if yo

create a new shift lever for your car. use a fly reel seat, slap on that reel for an added point of interest. you will be the rage of the neighborhood. the talk of the town. the bee's knees. the cat's meow. you get the picture.... :) eric fresno, ca.

I used to apply on 9 foot fly rods with a 6rpm motor. it was not ideal. i've moved to a 15rpm motor and have wrapped one rod with it. much much better. between the 9 and the 18, i'd go for the 18. now i can't tell you if it cures better at 6rpm vs 9 vs 15 vs 18. but i noticed nothing different in the curing of that one rod i did at 15rpm. a slip clutch is really nice. but when you want to do d

It's a good idea but not a new idea. Great that you discovered the concept! Flex Coat offers a Guide Foot Adhesive which is really similar to hot glue sticks. I think I read it does differ in that it has a lower melting point. No need for an actual hot glue gun though. eric fresno, ca.

Snake Brand for ease of guide foot prepping, virtually none. But I usually buy PacBay. They take more work to prep but they're cheaper and unfortunately, that's a criteria for me. I've bought Snake Brand (before the Universals were released), PacBay and AmTak. I have never experienced any wear issues on any of them over the 10 years I have been wrapping for myself (though I don't fish my fresh

I have no problem at all with the tag ends showing beneath my wraps, but i rarely use metallic thread. Silver rocks. Consider it a feature! :) eric fresno, ca.

that flex coat video john referenced is very informative. a slip clutch is handy to have but really it is not necessary at all. i don't have one. do you apply finish while the rod is on a dryer? if so, how fast does your rod dryer turn? as roger said, the faster the rod turns, the cleaner (and easier) it is to get a nice edge. i went from a 6rpm dryer to a 15rpm and it's so much nicer and easier.

Sounds like a lot of work for a wall-hanger. "Restore" has a lot of subjective interpretations. After gathering the information for your client, he may decide it'd be best to find another rod to restore, many may not need so much work. Personally, I'd prefer a wall-hanger to appear as original, which would include decades years of "patina" and not the look of a new rod. But ev

Any type of tape that can be cut small enough, can be removed relatively easily, and does not leave residue would work fine. There is also a product called Guide Foot Adhesive offered by Flex Coat. It resembles a stick of hot melt glue. It does not allow adjustments like tape or elastic bands do but it works great once you get the hang of it. eric fresno, ca.

A little late to this discussion, but as tom wrote, "The syringes are just so easy that anything else is almost like making extra work for yourself for no real benefit." actually, i would delete the "almost like" portion. :) i use the 3cc syringes offered by flex coat and mix a minimum of 2cc for each part by drawing in 3cc, remove from finish container, point tip up and de
