Thanks all for the answers to my question. John, the McMaster-Carr tip was exactly what I was searching for! Rog

Hello fellow rodbuilders I was just given an old (?) wood lathe that I want to re-accessorize for shaping cork grips. This lathe is a DUNLAP TOOLS / SEARS ROEBUCK & Co. model 534-0601. The base is cast iron and is about 40" long and the distance between the centers is approx. 30". It also has a 3/4hp motor (weighs a ton) and a set of 4 step pulleys. It runs nice! I know the spind

I just finished a dark colored rod with Gudebrod black/orange classic twist (with cp) and two trims with Gudebrod metallic black and metallic bright copper. The orange tones down slightly to a more "dark goldish" color. Gives a nice tiger stripe pattern - a little bit of flash - but not too loud. I'm not familiar with the blank color you have so not sure if it would work for your taste.

I also believe that these items are used by model railroaders. They should be available at any hobby shop dealing in train models. Rog

I have mounted spinning reel seats both ways. Reel position distance from the butt end of the rod may also be taken into account when balance is a consideration. Rog

I also prefer a slow speed motor for power wrapping. I have a 1750 rpm industrial motor that has a right angle gear box attached. This is connected to a dc motor speed control that allows me to dial variable speeds from dead stop to about 120 rpm smoothly, and with lots of torque. I have fashioned a chuck to fit the 5/8" shaft by clamping on a short section of 3/4" foam pipe insulation.

Mark, I just had the same surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago. Had 3 discs shaved and some "crabmeat" picked out. They also opened up the nerve canal to eliminate nerve pinches (about a 9" incision). Forget about wrapping rods for about 10 days or so, take it as easy as you can (wear out the catalogs and RMM mags) heal a little bit, and then tear into it! Since my surgery and about a 10 day w

Stopped in to a archery shop that was going out of business. They had some white solid fiberglass (?) arrow shafts used for bowfishing for carp. Bought a handful cheap! Painted one side black (along the length) and left the other side white. Stuck a foam foregrip on the end. Perfect color test sticks. Rog

A while back i was given a box full of what i assume to be surf rod guides. They are all metal wire and resemble a snake type guide except for the wire has a double, or completed circle twist to it. They are somewhat flexible and show no signs of rust or corrosion from years of sitting around. The largest of them measures approximately 50mm and they drop in size to about 6mm. Does anyone know

Jeff About a year and a half ago (if my memory is correct) I had the chance to stop into Mudhole's new location just as they were getting ready to open. I bought a few "no-name" 6'6" med light one piece graphite (IM6 ? - clear polished graphite color) blanks, supposedly from a well known mfgr., that were "out of mfgr. spec". Perfect inexpensive smallmouth spinning rod

The last 3 rods I built were 6'6" fast action med-light spinners. I used Alconites, and each rod had 6 guides plus the tip. The sizes I used were 20J, 12J, 8LJ, 6J, 6J, 6J, 6tip. Spacing from tip 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7.5, 9.5, 11. All 3 of these rods cast like a dream and all fish well. I don't know what blank or what reel you are using, but if you have the time to experiment, tape 'em on using this

PS Depending on the mounting situation, you may get a lot of interference or false images from your feet/legs or push fins. The units only stick down in the water a couple feet (from the stern of a small boat). You would have to be able to mount the unit away from your body enough (or deep enough) to keep your feet/fins from getting below the transducer. Rog

Took 2 of them to Canada several times for use on rented boats. They work well, are light and very portable. Just the ticket for float tube use I would think. Rog

Keith I have used the 811 CP with inconsistent results also. I bought some Glass Coat CP...and problem solved. Goes on easy, nail polish consistency, decent color retention, and less cussing!!! Rog

Another CP you might want to try is the Glass Coat CP. It is very clear out of the bottle, thin consistency, and puts up less of a fight than the 811 when applying. I have had nice results using the GC. Rog

Vanish line and spinning reels don't go together in my book. Spooled up 3 reels for Canada trip, had trouble with line twist on all 3 (3 different rods) and immediately took the Vanish off and went back to the old trouble free XL. Iv'e tried a bunch of different new lines and keep returning to Trilene XL. Rog

I have stopped using both FC and 811 in favor of Glass Coat CP. It's easier to apply than the 811, and I get nice results with it. Rog

I am looking at a 2006 Mudhole catalog and they show 5 different shades gold in A Gudebrod HT metallic. I have also used gold Sulky metallic and like the color selection. As Larry ststed the Sulky is slightly smaller than A, but I also think it is easier to work with than HT. You can scope out the colors of Sulky at any well stocked sewing store - JoAnns etc. Gudebrod 9396 copper HT may also mat

I have used reamers I made from blank sections with grit epoxyed on. Some of the grit will come off. To get the loose grit out of the inside of the cork grips use a small diameter bottle brush, or better yet tubing brushes (sold at commercial kitchen suppliers - made to clean food processing equipment and beer taps etc.) Slip the twisted metal brush handles through the grip and pull it through. I bought a magnifier lamp at Lowes. It has a heavy base - not a clamp (easily moveable), and a decent moveable arm. It takes a standard screw-in type bulb (I use a 60 watt "sunlight" bulb in mine). I think it was around $20. Good enough for my bench! Rog

Did any rodbuilders attend last years Washington PA sportsmans show? There was supposed to be a few rodbuilding vendors and/or manufacturers there. If so - how many and who? Was it worth the trip? Is this years show supposed to include rodbuilding again? More? What's the scoop?? Rog

Steve I just compared the guides on my old BPS IM6 mega cast spinning rod to a set of unused Pac Bay "model M" guides that I have. They are the same guides. 2004 Pac Bay catalog, bottom of page 21 (don't know what page if newer catalog). I think I bought this set at Versitex a couple of years ago. If you have a hard time finding any e-mail me. The set I have (gold frames - hialoy ri

While recently visiting my daughter in Orlando I made a "whats new" visit to Mudhole. While there I picked up Ken Preston's DVD on rodbuilding. Complete start to finish rod building instruction in an easy to digest format with a few neat tricks thrown in ! It can't be beat for the price in my opinion. My .02 !

I have heard that the neon colors (jig wrapping thread) will fade rather quickly. I have several spools of the neons (pink, orange, chartreuse) but I only use it for high contrast when practicing or designing fancy wraps.

Hunter I am in the middle of building a 6' 3" Shikari walleye sreies spinning blank that I just set up a set of Fuji Alconites (concept style) on to test. After a few test casts my best setup works out to 20 - 12 - 8L - 6 - 6 - 6 - 6 tip. My butt guide is 21 1/2" from the middle of the reelseat. My reel is a Shimano Sahara 2500. I'll be using 8 lb line. This setup casts a mile with l
