John I build mostly light and medium light spinning rods. I also mostly use Fuji Alconite giudes (new concept style) precisely because of their lightness and slimmer profiles. I use BYAG and BLAG guides and BFAT tops, and am totally satisfied with their performance. Only drawback is limited color choices. I also am planning to give the Batson guides and tops a whirl soon. Albert I have done my kits the same way Tom has described. Installed the butt grip so that the blank stopped short of the end of the butt grip about the same distance as the length of the plug. Trimmed the plug diameter down with a razor blade to slightly bigger than the hole (doesn't have to be exactly round), glued it up and stuck it in till good and snug. After the glue dries rough trim any

David I have used the Elmers wood filler with good results. I put a lttle bit on a spatula and force it into the pits in the cork. Then lightly sand off the excess. It comes in a few diferent colors. I bought it at the local big box home improvement center. Works for me! Rog

Hello all. Can anyone post the formula for figuring out lathe spindle rpm's? I just got a 1940's wood lathe (belt driven) rebuilt and running. On the motor shaft is a 4 part pulley with different diameters from large to small. On the opposing lathe shaft is a 4 part pulley with different diameters from small to large. The smallest motor pulley opposes the largest lathe shaft pulley. The mot

I have a couple different colors of the Elmers wood fillers and they do work pretty good for filling cork. If the Mudhole version is the same - ditto Jim's "works pretty good". Rog

Mark, There are also a lot of hobby rodbuilders out there too! I just picked up this habit about 4 or so years ago, and have built about 15 spinning rods for my friends and relatives. I have about 8 blanks sitting in my shop just begging for some attention. Nothing like complaining about the pain in your hands after a good day of throwing 4lb. smallmouth back in the drink - all caught on ro

Aaron I use "golden taklon" brushes. They are relatively cheap (.50 ea ?) and easy to find at the big name arts/crafts stores. They come in 1/4" and 3/8" widths and have a flat profile, and are usually in 3 packs. They are also somewhat stiff and can be used like a spatula - the best of both worlds! The brushes I use to apply CP with I clean out and re-use a few times. I j

Although I don't have the Pac Bay model, I have built my own version of the finish mixer. No bubbles - none! I use a steel ball to mix in the cup and just pour the finish and the ball onto my flat surface. I then finish my wraps before worrying about cleaning the ball. I then use a small magnet to pick the ball out of the waste finish, and wipe it off with paper towels dampened with denatured alc

Anyone out in rodbuilder land know where to purchase small sports team stickers or decals (fingernail decals ??) small enough for light spin rod blanks? I'm looking specifically for Pittsburgh Steelers & Penguins decals. A Merry & a Happy to all ! Rog

Mike I just finished a tiger wrap butt wrap in Cleveland Indian colors. I used Gudebrod regular scarlet and ncp white for the base wrap and used regular navy for the top wrap. It came out really nice. At second glance one could say it is a rather "patriotic looking" wrap! Rog

James I kinda do it like Ellis. I just heat the end of the stick and press it onto something, and then pull it slowly away from that something. This leaves strings of glue that i snip off and use to fill the top tube. Heat the tube and stuff it onto the blank top! Rog

Eric I'm about to fit up the same handle kit on my next rod. The cork cylinder is the plug to fill the hole in the butt end of the butt grip. You will have to shave/sand it down to fit the hole left from reaming the butt grip. After you get it sized, glue it in and sand it off. I am actually going to glue 2 cork rings to the butt end of my grip and turn them down in order to fit on a high den

Charles I just used the Mudhole guide holder for the first time on a set of Fuji Alconites (BYAG & BLAG's) down to size 6. It's worth every penny to me. I'm sure you could make a similar holder from hardware store parts for a lot less $ but if you don't want to run around and burn $3 a gal. gas to find the parts the Mudhole guide holder works great! It "stops the pain". Rog

Good evening fellow rodbuilders! Does anyone happen to know what the fuji alconite guide frames are made of ? (BYAG's & BLAG's). This info doesn't seem to be in the latest fuji catalog. I would like to blacken the shiny ground areas after prepping the guide feet and am wandering if the metal will "take" gun blueing. As I understand it, stainless steel will not "take" t

I re-shape pre made grips on my wood lathe. The filler does tend to "dissappear" from the grip if you sand alot. I just refill the remaining grooves and holes when I get the grip to the shape I want. Elmers makes wood crack filler that comes in a squeeze tube and also comes in different colors - a few are very close to cork colors. I smear some of this in the cracks with a spatula and

I think I may have been the originator of the previous "old wood lathe" post about a month ago. I am also in mid process of rebuilding my old sears-roebuck wood lathe. I have just picked up two pieces of 1/8" sheet steel, one for a baseplate for the lathe and motor hinge, and the other for the motor itself. I have also ordered a 1/2" drill chuck and a live center from Penn Sta
