I took a look at my lathe tailstock and the spindle point (not a live center) in mine was also on a #1MT shaft. It must have just "tapped out" of the tailstock mechanism. The lathe came with 2 centers, both of which are #1MT and are interchangeable. If it helps, the #1MT receiver in my tailstock can be removed from the tailstock casting by turning the crank handle counter-cloc

I also was given an old Dunlop by Sears wood lathe, although mine seems to be a different model (older). I did get the wood spindle point out of the tailstock and installed a new live center without too much of a battle, although it's been a while since I did it and I don't remember specifically how I did it. I think mine was #1 MT. Later today I'll take another look at my lathe and re

I also follow Billy's methods for the most part. I wipe down the rod blank before wrapping any guides or butt wrap. Sometimes just with a dry soft cloth and sometimes with a wet cloth with a little mild soap on it. I wash my hands often while wrapping and handling thread. I use a doubled over piece of blue painters tape to "dab off" any dust or fuzzies on the wraps before cp-ing

When I get the 14 blanks built that I have sitting and waiting for my attention, I will have about 30 rods or so! You can never have too many!
Go for it!

427. Re: Guide alignment
Ed,
I almost forgot. I also cut off the "head" of an old spinning reel, leaving the reel foot and an inch or so of the shaft. I painted a thin light colored line in the middle of the back side of the shaft. Mount this reel foot in the reel seat and use it as a gun sight to help alignment.

Here's the way I do it. I have a section of my rodbuild area wall painted white, and I have the wall well lighted. I first hold the butt end of the rod (spinning rod) up near my face. With one eye I sight down the rod looking over the guides (not through the rings) with the guides facing up, pointing the tip of the rod toward the white wall. I note which guides I think need a little tweak.

I decided to build a rod or two just as a hobby - something to do for a while! In the process I found out that I could actually build a rod that performed much better and looked much better than the rods I was buying retail. I have since built about 20 rods for friends and family and get "wows" and other assorted compliments from all that I have built one for. It's personally

I also have received a blank that was damaged (beyond any useful purpose) in shipment. I was told that a new blank was being shipped (it was) and that the broken blank was going to be picked up for return from my house (it never was). I kept the broken blank on my front porch, in a tube, with the return info, for a week. The blank was never picked up. That was more than a year ago and I st

I have a collection of old issues dating back to sometime in the '70s. I'll look through them this weekend and see if I have the issue you're looking for.

Jim
I have built a couple of Steelers themed rods for friends. The colors I have found to be the closest match for them is (of course) black regular nylon, gudebrod goldenrod #209 in either reg nylon or NCP, and white NCP. I use a couple of coats of CP over all of these threads before finishing.

consider using a couple lengths of heavy "unistrut". it is steel framing used on construction sites to support plumbing and electrical conduits. it's a square shaped steel "c" channel with (or without) holes spaced along it's length and is pretty rigid. it comes standard in 10' lengths and fittings are available for connecting pieces together. i have also seen it in l

I have built a couple of rods in Penn State (boo-hoo) colors - blue & white. The only way I could get the white to stay white was by using white ncp thread and then using 2 coats of color preserver over it.. The white color was used for narrow trim bands only (and the blue (regular nylon) was the main wrap color).Consider grey ncp thread with a couple of coats of cp.

A year ago I was also looking for Steelers decals, and came up empty. But I did manage to find a few Steelers peel and stick fingernail stickers through a coworker. Check with any big fingernail salons (if you're located in Steeler country) or anyone who does fingernail decoration. Be careful not to buy fingernail decals (from the internet) that are printed on clear decal material unles

I use a home-made motorized epoxy mixer. It's variable speed, and I use several different size (weight ?) steel ball bearings to mix with, depending on the viscosity of the materials being mixed. I pour the mixed epoxy out onto a piece of foil and when done applying the epoxy to the rod I pick the steel ball out of the remaining epoxy with a small magnet and drop it into a alcohol wetted paper to

PS I also made my third trip in about 5 years to Mudhole. Stopped in thinking I was going to spend $200-300. Walked out with about $750 worth of blanks and handle components, and even had to go back the next day for a few forgotten items. Like a kid in a candy store!! They're nice and helpful people there!!

I was in the Orlando area for a visit last November. A man that works with my daughter took me out on his boat for a day (thanks Chris) on a small city operated lake named Underhill. I'm not very used to lake fishing for largemouth, but I managed to have a pertty good day using Pennsylvania river smallmouth tackle and lures (my own built rods of course). I believe Orlando operates several

The last rod I finished was a Steelers themed rod. I used regular Gudebrod black nylon, NCP white and NCP goldenrod colors - all with 2 coats of cp before finish was applied. The colors came out pretty close. A nice touch was a Steelers fingernail decal/sticker in the butt wrap.

Mee too on the bigger sizesof Aero reelseats. You can't fit a lot of the reels that I use on the 16. If they made 17's and 18's I'd buy them almost exclusively!! C'mon American Tackle - how about some 17's & 18's!!!

After mixing my finish I pour the steel ball onto the foil right along with the finish. After completely finishing my wraps I take a small magnet and pick the ball out of the left over finish and drop it into a alcohol wetted paper towel for cleaning. No need to hurry cleaning the ball, and the only wasted finish is the leftovers I'm not going to use anyway.

If you do use a can of compressed air don't shake or move the can while you are spraying. It will squirt the propellant on your wraps and may leave residue.
I just use a 1" to 2" piece of blue painters masking tape to form a loop - sticky side out. Stick the loop to your finger and lightly tap the wraps while turning the rod slowly. This will pull off any fuzzies and flakes.

What type of rod? What sizes are you looking for?
I have a big bag full of these from about size 50's down to the little ones (no tops).

I float fish a couple of the local rivers for smallmouth bass. I tried braided line just once, and immediately went back to mono after that trip! If your type of fishing involves a moving boat, when you snag the bottom you have absolutely no time to react to the snag. There is no forgiving stretch to the braid. I constantly was afraid of breaking rods or losing them over the side of the

I fish PA's Juniata and Susquehanna rivers for smallies in the 10" to 20" range. Most all of my rods are built on 6'6" "spin jig" blanks in a light or medium light power and fast action. A 6'6" rod gives me a little better hook set than shorter rods. I use these rods to throw 1/16th and 1/8th oz. jigs and tubes, small spinners, small Rapala's and topwaters l
