I've been fishing mostly with trolling reels. I always set the drag to 1/3 of the line resistance. For a 50 lb rod, I use 50 lb line and I set the drag to 16 lb aprox.
Is all this the same when using spinning reels?.
I have a frinds who wants me to build a rod to be use for jigging with a Daiwa Saltiga Z-6500 (30Kg = 70 lb drag!!). Must I select a 80 lb blank, a 70 x 3 = 210 lb one,...??.

Hi again,
I'm preparing my first jigging rod. What we call "jigging" is fishing with 6 to 8 oz (in our case) lead fishes, with the boat stopped. I just tell it because I want to be sure we're talking about the same. There is no translation into Spanish and we ll in Spain use "jigging" word.
Well, in our area we can fish bluefin using jigging, but out of bluefin season we

I've finally received some components from the US. One among them is a set of Fuji BHNLG guides, these with black frame.
I've seen that ffram was slightly matt, some no gloss areas. I've cleaned it with alcohol (ethanol) and its still matter!!.
Is there any way to make it shine?.
Best regards,
Daniel

Hi again to everybody!
I've trying to get info on how to make these beautiful multicolor weavings. I've made my firsts two colors ones based on Clemen's book.
I've made several "search" in hte phorum and I've got two ideas:
- buying Doc Ski's video: US VHS system doesn't work in Spain and there is no DVD version available.
- Reading Rod Makers Magazine: I subscribed this mont

If you sent an e-mail tome today, please send it again!!.
Thanks in advance.

I imagin this is a silly question but, must color protector be applied over metallic thread (I mean in a wrap made only with metallic thread) or just if there is any "non protected" nylon thread in the wrap?

Has some European guy bought one of these DVDs (Ken Preston's one)?. Can you watch it on European TV/DVD system? And in a computer?. You know, I think DVDs has a key code depending on geographical areas...
I'd like also get Doc Ski "Advanced weaving" but I'm afraid VHS cannot be seen in Eurpoean system. Does anyone knows if is there any DVD or AVI/MPG version?.

I imagine that no dynamic test are made before wrapping roller guides in a heavy (80 or 130 lb) trolling line. The question is regarding static test (line not to touch the balnk under load).
How do you temporarily fix the roller guides to move them if necessary?. I have not tested it yet, but guide tubing seems to be not enough and maybe a large ammount of masking tape would be necessary...

Hi again,
I received Clemens' books last week and this week end I was encouraged enough to enter into rod building. I've made my first guide wraps, usin available threads, so colors do not match. Light blue, metallic blue and gold are size A, and dark blue is size D.
They are just tests, so all these guides will be removed.
I'm happy because I see I'll be able of doing it (I've just wra

I've read some post telling that blanks do not know what are they going to be used for. So you could theorically use any blank for any application if specifications match what you're looking for.
But producers sometimes include a blank for a specific application. And provided specifications are not always the same, depending on "intended future use" of the blank.
In the catalog I

My question is: do you always seal epoxy?. I mean, all commercial rods sold in Spain bring unsealed cork. It's intended they must be sealed by the buyer?. It's just a matter of aesthetic?.
When must cork be sealed and when not?.

Nice rods, Phil. I specially like white looks.
Can you give me more info regarding the one you're fighting the tuna with?. I think there are 9 guides + tip. Are they all this light Aftco?. How long is this blank?.

I'm planning my first trolling rods. First of all, I'd like to build a 30 lb, 6' to 7' stand up rod. I've thought about using these Aftco lighweight roller guides, that seem to be more resistant (against hits and so) than SIC guides.
Has anyone tested them for 30 lb trolling?. In the catalog texts they seem to be more used for casting than for light trolling.
Are these guides feet already

I've already removed the gimbal (it also spinned, so it was easy to remove). I've also cut off the rear grip, and removed (just spinning) the reel seat.
Both gimbal and reel seat were in effect glued using masking tape bushings, one at each edge of the seat. A big ammount of glue was added and then left cured in horizontal position. So, what I have found is a "block" of glue (I imag

109. Replacing reel seat
Dear friends,
There will be probably several topics regarding what I'm going to ask. Unfortunatelly, this time my English is not good enough to find the right words to search. If you want, please reffer me to these topics.
The question is that I have a commercial deep jigging rod, 7 feet, 4 to 18 oz lure weight (jor jigging, not casting).
Due to some constrution defect, reel seat turns

110. Bushings
Once again, I just want to know your opinnion, this time regarding reel seats assembly.
Tom's book, page 24: "...Thoroughly coat the surfaces and sides of your arbors or bushings with the adhesive and slide the seat down over the assembly, totating it as you do so..." In this case, it seems that bonding is something like "seat to arbor" + "arbor to blank". Tom doe

Yeah, I know that. The question is that we can sometimes heard or read things like "It's better to place the guide inthe spine" or "opposite the spine".
These are the kind of things that make us, beginners, to get lost.

Hi guys,
I received Tom Kirkman's book yesterday and I've just finished first reading.
I also received Flex Coat's "Step by step rod building". I'm planning to build first rod during next week, but I wanted to "impregnate" myself from erudites' wisdom before.
Unfortunatelly, I've found several points that seem to say opposite things. This is not my intention to give r

I'm still waiting for the first books to come and it's possible I'll find the answer there, but time is running and I need some answers to my questions...
There will probably be more reasons, but I can easily imagine two of them to build your own rod:
- To have the rod of your dreams, reagrding performace, weight,...
- To have one of the most beautiful ones
In most cases reagarding firs

114. About solvents
I've posted a message regarding materials I would need to begin. I've noted graphite arbors.
I've also seen that most of you recommend denaturalized alcohol as solvent, to clean epoxy from the blank or to thin finishes and glues.
Is this "denaturalized alcohol" methanol?. May I use isopropyl alcohol, too?. Is here any reason to use it or not?.
Although it's recommended in some

Yes, Barry, this is one of the possibilities I thought. But i don't discard to buy it already built if power supply is transformed from 110ac to 12cc (for example), so I just must to change the transformer. Another solution shouldbe changing just the motor, although I would also have problems with speed control.
But let's see specification first. And, as Jim said, it will take still some time.

Hi, Jim,
Of course, you are right. As I said, I'm just 'planning' at this moment. But as far as we're an small tackle store, we would like to offer custom rods to our customers. This market doe not exist in Spain and we will not buy any wrapper till we will see if this works or not, although I'll build my own rods for myself, with or without wrapper.
And, as I said, I'll have to see if I can

Hi, guys
I received my first order just a couple of days ago. As I live in Spain, it takes some days orders to arrive and, since this is the first time I'll try to build a rod, I'd like to be sure I have all what I'll need before I'll begin. Otherwise, first experience can also be the first fiasco. I've ordered some books too (Tom's "Rod Building Guide" and Clemens' "Advanced C
