New to air brushing.. Want to paint some ice blanks. normally I use krylon fusion which is real flexible and doesn't crack. But they don't have all the colors that I need. Do I need to be concerned with paint cracking (there will be a coat of clear coat over it) for ice blanks? Suggestion on make and model and decent company to deal with please. thanks, Buzz

Jon, get yourself a decent power wrapper and shape the grips in either EVA, natural cork, or burl cork to EXACTLY the size you want. Custom grips with SK2 reel seats are really nice. Buzz

Yes, for every rod that has a custom grip and reel location according to the customers request I test cast. Use rubber tubing to hold the guides in place so the stripper/butt guide can easily be moved. I test cast everything between UL spin rods, to fly rods, to "pounder" musky rods that cast 16 ounces of treble hook infested rubber. It does make a difference. I am not looking at dist

Jay, CIB42MHX untrimmed, GREAT walleye rod. If you wanted to go a touch lighter for smaller jigs but plenty of backbone CIB42LMHX. Both are solid graphite.

Mark, we take a CIB-42-MHX which is rated light but really is a medium, cut off about 3" from tip. then cut butt to your length. conventional reel but sprial wrap the guides. Great lake trout jigging stick. "sensitive to the bite"? In 150 of water with braid? He might be asking for a lot there. Blank I mentioned is a very popular light lake trout blank. Give it a try and ask him

I have used about 40 complete sets for student's rods in classes. They are holding up well thus far and the guide feet are prepped so well little or no guide prep is needed. As they are new I can't comment on the long term durability but first look they seem to be very nice guides Buzz

Very interesting Norm, I wonder if this would work on SK2 hard plastic winding checks also? Have you tried it on those? What is the cutting/sanding surface on hand reamer? Great idea but a crappy pic on their website, thanks, Buzz

Michael, The customer told me what he liked about his current rod and what he wants to change with the custom ice rod. I could not identify the guides he told me he had on his current rod so that I could suggest a better quality for his custom rod. I like to ID what he likes and does not like about current rods before I suggest components. It was his description of the current guides that I was

Im trying to put together an ice rod for someone and they are requesting the "black imitation recoil guides" because they are cheaper than the "real" REC recoil guides. I have no idea what he is talking about and he can't come up with a brand. Any suggestions? Thanks, Buzz

Strongly suggest you take a Mud Hole 2 day rod building class. You get the basics (far more than the basics in my opinion) on day one. Day two lots of advanced technique demos and a whole morning of questions and answers. Day 2 includes use of power wrapper and other tools. If you can't wait for the next class (January) then my suggestion would be to locate a builder in your area and set up an ap

Justin, What is the lure rating in ounces? How deep are you fishing? Mono or braid? If you can't find an ice blank that suits your needs try a Mud Hole CRB spin blank and cut to size. It will take a blank or two to figure out the action and power that you want but it can be done. The Ice Blank World is full of panfish blanks but short on big fish ice blanks. Buzz

Matt, If you have a specific blank and length of blank in mind shoot me an email and I will be happy to give you guide styles, locations, and sizes that I would put on the rod and you can then modify that information to your preferences. Buzz

Minima match 4 spin guides in sizes depending on height of stripper guide to match inline, spin, or schoolie reel. Number of guides determined by static line deflection test which is affected by glass or graphite. use LOTS of guides to cover the stress distribution.
