You can see the blank for yourself on Mudhole's website, but I built the MB843 in metallic lime green. It's far for what I would call LIME. It's more of a forest. Anyway, I used chocolate thread. I thought it turned up pretty decent looking. It's definitely more on the subdued side. I would think black would be good too. Or, you can always do what interior paint decorators do and pick a thread t

This is very interesting data and, if I understand what I'm reading correctly, possibly answers a couple of questions I've had regarding manufacturers' ratings. Example, I have a Favorite White Bird that is listed as 7'0" MH / Fast action. I've never known if the rod was mislabeled or what but I do know there's no way it's a MH power rod. It's a medium at best and I love it for applications

Mudhole seems, from my limited experience with them, to be very customer service oriented. I recently decided to give rod building a try and decided on the rod builder kit they sell as well as the MHX MB843 casting rod kit. The building kit was supposed to be a 2 spool with a 9 rpm dryer motor. What I received was a 4 spool and an 18 rpm dryer motor. I called their tech support with a build quest

Tom, I know I'm probably driving you nuts by now, but one last question just so I am 100% clear on this. You stated: Once you determine the straightest axis, mark it and then flex the blank against that axis. 99% of the time you'll be flexing against the rod's strongest axis. Remember, this would be butt and tip up, belly down, in a fishing situation." In reading that I'm visualizing a

This sort of thing always interests me. Being new to this, I read a LOT, pretty much any and everything I can get my hands on to the point that I'm neglecting my book club readings, lol. One of the things that caught my eye was a gentleman stating that his rod is "on par with high end $300 production built rods". I built the exact same rod he did. It's a kit off of Mudhole (MHX MB843 7'

I'm new too. I just finished my first "work horse" bass rod, as I would call it. It's a 7' medium heavy / fast action. I built a MHX kit as my first build just to make sure I even enjoyed doing it. I enjoyed it so much, my wallet is already 3 more custom builds lighter. Well, I haven't actually purchased the components yet but the funds are set aside. I'm retired and just want something

I read the article and understand what it's saying, but I still have my reservations about any of this mattering unless, perhaps, you're building rods to catch huge salt water fish. But, again, I'm new and may soon learn I'm off my rocker. But, on my first build, I put the butt of the blank on our ceramic tile floor, put a bend in the upper third and rolled it. It snapped into a position that fel

Thanks David, I'll check out the KR guides. Yes, I'm going to build a 7' one piece spinning rod to, hopefully, take the place of my old 2 piece (heavy) ugly stik.

I bought a little, 3 drawer, rolling storage table at Kohls. Think I paid like $50. That's where I'm keeping my stuff now. Hopefully, no more turning the house upside down looking for guides and tip tops. I don't know what app you're referring to.

I'm a new rod builder so I'm not stating anything as fact, just different opinions I've read in my short learning journey so far. I've watched a lot of the "This is how we do it" videos at Flex Coat. They're pretty informative to me. One thing I picked up on from Roger Seider (I think that's his name) is that a lot of blanks have more than one spine. He recommended going with the more p

Thank you guys! Yes, I'm very much looking forward to taking a deeper dive into the craft. It's strictly going to be a hobby for me, however. That said, I've already had an acquaintance of mine that owns a tackle shop ask me about replacing the reel seat nut on his favorite rod. I don't think it would be that big of a deal. The nut cracked and will not lock down the reel. He thinks it would be ea

Hello Everyone, I've been bass fishing for awhile and recently decided I'd like to have a hobby for when the weather isn't cooperating so here I am. I just finished my first rod build. I didn't want to empty the bank account in case I didn't like it so I went with the CRB rod building kit from Mudhole. I also chose one of their rod kits to get my feet wet. I must say, the build was almost flaw
