I don’t know about that stuff, but ProKote isn’t far behind in terms of drying time.

You can 650 yards of it on @#$%& for $14.95. I'm not posting the link because I don't know if that's frowned upon or not, but Google is your friend.

This may not always be the case, but so far I've built the rods per advice here which is to go for as light as possible and be comfortable. The result in every case thus far has been a well balanced rod without doing a thing to it.

305. Rod Balance
I recently inquired about the specs of a rod, including weight. I got a reply from customer service. However, the weight response raised an eyebrow with me. They gave me the answer of "4.65oz, but can vary a little as we put balance each rod". Do they mean ballast? This is not a blank outfit. It's a production rod outfit so we're talking about a ready to fish rod. Anyone care to specula

I have the 4 spool CRB. These are the attributes I like about it.
- 4 spool capability. I rarely use more than one, but I keep my 4 favorites on it for convenience.
- Tension rod. Love the fact I can go get a drink of water and be gone an hour, come back and it’s just as I left it.
- Didn’t cost my first born

Try it. Just remember the goal. You just want to scuff up the finish a bit. You’re not trying to strip paint off your Grandpa’s model A.

A lot depends on the retrieve style. I like a fast action because (just like walking a spook), I impart the action with a bit of hair of the slack in the line. That said, I c

Hey Mark, not casting stones. I have my own short comings, lol. The only non-thread finish designed epoxy I've heard of anyone using is a version of Gorilla glue, but I can't recall the particular one. But, I saw it on YouTube. Essentially, you need it to have some give, have a strong bond, but have some elasticity because, obviously, it's going to get flexed when the rod is in use. Good luck and

You should be looking for epoxy that’s designed for the job. You don’t have an epoxy problem. I believe you have an inventory management problem. You either kept it around too long or, perhaps, you just happen to get the rare defective unit. However, as I stated before, thread finish has a shelf life of a year. If you’re that concerned about it, buy the thread finish in the 24 cc pre-loaded syrin

ProKote is thin. It also takes longer to cure. I just finished a rod with it and still had a very slight tacky feel at the 12 hour mark. Got up this morning (23 hours after second coat) and it was good to go.
Since you don’t have any choice, your question is moot. Personally, it would worry me just having one coat of ProKote. Again, it’s thin to begin with. I would put a second coat on regardl

You didn’t say how old the finish epoxy was, but epoxy typically has a shelf life of around a year. As far as brands, I use ProKote and Flex Coat Original High Build and I only keep small quantities on hand (24 cc preloaded syringes). I know it’s cheaper to buy larger quantities, but I like the convenience of the preloaded stuff and still get at least two rods, possibly three out them. If I’m wor

316. Re: Jerkbait blank
I don't have any specific blank to suggest. If you can you use a 6'8" for a jerk bait rod, you must be pretty tall. I'm 5'10" and would be slapping water, the boat and possibly myself trying to work a jerkbait with that long of a rod. Most average height anglers use a 6'6" to 7"2 rod. I use a 7'0" myself. But, other than the length, he main thing, IMO, is keep it to a med

As a relative noob myself, I have a question. John is favoring single foot guides. Is that a good idea on that large of a rod? I'm building my nephew a 7', large swimbait rod (2-6oz lure rating) and I'm going double foot on all of the guides and even the tip top has a foot. I'm just curious if John should go double foot, or am I just going overkill.

I wouldn’t use a sharpie. It won’t last. Contrary to popular belief, they’re not “permanent”.
Lance, if you decide to try tubing/bands again, get yourself a small pair of cuticle clippers. They’re perfect for snipping the band.

Perhaps use a slightly larger band. I use tape on larger guides (spinning) and tubing on the smaller stuff (4, 5, 6, mm). And, I have 3 different sizes of tubing. Nothing says you do the same thing on every guide. A lot of folks like glue. I tried it, but I prefer tape and/or tubing.
p.s. I have a 3 sided knife sharpener I use to prep the guides. I never have to use the coarse side and rarely

Thanks Kendall! I'll mention the grip idea to him. I could easily turn that rear grip into a 10" and make the 2 into a 3". To get 4-5" on the fore, I'd have to just buy one. I'm not at a point, yet, where I have spare materials laying around.

Found my pen set! I played around with the India ink (I brain *bleep*ed and said "acrylic" in an earlier post). That's the best, IMO. If I were doing this as a business and wanted to put out the very best quality I could, I would go that route. That said, I'm not a business. I build for myself, friends and family. Therefore, I'm going to stick to the gelly rolls. They are fast, surprisi

Update: The build sheet is complete. I offered up all of the blank options I have found, or have been suggested by you guys and other anglers I know that use this fishing technique. Keep in mind, my nephew, due to his budget, had some decisions to make on the build, particularly, the blank. But, here's what he settled on:

I didn't ask, but my nephew fishes out of a Kayak. I assume he's concerned about space.

Of course, I'm not your customer, but if I were, I'd want you to make it perform like a new rod, but have the look of one with normal wear and tear for its age. Part of that would be leaving the faded decals alone. I think that'd be pretty cool, actually. Now that I think about it, I wonder if anyone makes distressed / vintage looking components that perform like state of the art stuff does? I'd

Yes, I really wasn’t sure about the correct reel seat size, but if 17 is what I should go with, then that’s what I’ll do. I have a $300 max budget for the build (I’m building it for my nephew). I’m starting to get on board with cutting a blank down. I’m not sure I can stay in that range with the Point Blank offerings, but we’ll see.
