2 Things Charlie - Why has the bug bitten you so hard? I've been curious about BFS, but still haven't been sold on just not using light spinning gear. Secondly, I would say that the spiral wrap would also pretty much eliminate the line catching around the tip like with conventional casting layouts. Maybe its just me, but every now and then my line will find its way around my tiptop and I have

@Anybody who asks a question here is showing humility to admit their ignorance, hence the question - you're in good company my friend. Have you ever built a spinning or casting rod? I ask because if you have only built fly rods and only ever used double foot guides I would strongly encourage you to try a build with single foot guides. Or wait until your friends single foot build is done an

Matt that actually made me laugh out loud That is certainly quite the interesting concept, I'm especially interested in why they don't allow music, or are they making it clear that this is not a musical instrument haha

I think I'm just gonna glue my next spinning seat right on the edge of the butt and hope I don't catch any big fish Bob I like that concept, I'm going to compare that measurement to just holding a rod and seeing where I like the feel of where it lands.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts y'all! I'm gonna see what happens with a beefy spinning build, I've never reeled in a 1/2 oz spinnerbait or crank bait or worm on a spinning reel - but definitely seems worth a go considering the carefree castability. I hate having one of the few days I get to actually go fishing be a total bust because the wind is acting up.

I'd agree and disagree haha. I agree a blank is whatever you make it, I'm with you man, I've been known to ask others "is a trash barrel still a trash barrel if I don't put trash in it"? But just about every manufacturer I've looked at has blanks designated as spinning or casting - that's what I was referring to. It's also very apparent with off the rack rods, you get a same bran

Hey yall, With the ability to build a spinning rod on a typical casting blank Why not build a spinning rod for times you're not target casting? I'm thinking bass fishing, open water cranking, jerk bait, Spinnerbait outside of cover, basically anything that's less concerned with precision placement. Especially for anything with treble hooks where a spinning reel most often has better drag th

Mark, you wouldn't happen to be in MA would ya haha I'd love to connect and talk rod building experiments Tom I can dig 2 coats and one for good luck, that has gotta reduce the weight somewhat all the way through the train.

@Robert - when you say it was an eye opener what do you mean? What did you glean from the results as it pertains to building (or was it simply the fact that it was done at all to your surprise)? @Tom - how many coats of PG could you get away with on a wrapped guide? Seeing how thin it is compared to 1 coat of high build or 2 coats of low build I would imagine 5-10 coats could still result in a

I like the way you think Mark, definitely keep us posted. The next step might be to try some paste epoxy in the same fashion How little wrapping could be done and still hold, starting from the ankle of the guide wrapping to the toes could wrapping only half a guide still hold strong? @Tom, have you done similar experiments with PG? Is there a similar period of the hardening of the PG w

Freakin sweet build Bob! The wraps came out awesome, and I think you stumbled upon a great lay out with less guides. I also feel you on the pre-overthinking, although sometimes I find that my pre-overthinking can be a bit paralyzing. I could over think Cheerios or Life cereal - when I really just need to pour a bowl and eat something. And don't even get me started on hindsight, I look back at

@Tom I wasn't saying he never switched (I understood already that he very well may have made these comments earlier in the timeline). I was just saying that he said (evidenced by the quote next to that picture) that the wraps that get to the bottom fast have more friction and worse casting than his way. I was merely including the simple spiral in his generalization because generally speaking the

@Chris ah okay gotcha. @David, I see what you're saying, but I think you unintentionally defended the test at the same time - as you end with your contention to bench tests you (which is certainly understandable) you started by saying this test is pretty close to real world fishing as a bench test can get. The difference is testing on the water would likely be more difficult to measure and mor

Also, I noticed that posting from the app results in no update to the last poster where it lists the most recent post info, and doesn't bump to the top (I think we knew that last one) And to clarify, that is an image of an article Ralph wrote.

I found it! Granted he didn't specifically say "simple spiral" he explicitly states that his way is better than all simple spirals that quickly move the line to 180 (obviously including the "simple spiral")

I take it back We can't trust Ralph ;) Joking aside, I'll try to find what I read, I could've sworn he mentioned specifically the simple spiral not being as good as Robert's. Have you or anybody you know of or anybody here built with exactly the same components but different spiral wrap methods to compare?

I'm still making my way through getting to my first spiral wrapped rod - but I have spent hours and hours reading and watching videos and thoroughly researching with an open mind and a critical eye. I found a post elsewhere talking about the Roberts wrap method and how Ralph O'Quinn implemented it with some mindful modifications it seems - he is an absolute believer in this method over a simple s

@MArk my understanding was such that less guides are needed, that's what drove my curiosity about when they mentioned they have no problem using extra guides. From what I've read of spiral wraps I'm sold, but I'd still really like to hear more of what about it causes your enthusiasm for it. I'd be happy to talk about it more through email or take it to the recent spiral wrap thread. @Kendall I

Hey Chris, I found the video- it's very similar to your testing. This dude definitely set up a system that eliminates as many variables as possible with a repeatable process. If one considers vibration through a rod part of a rod's sensitivity then this test seems pretty solid. What were you doing to cause vibrations?

@Joel- if you know it's 150% more positive I'm assuming you measured it the Shimano way, glad it worked for ya ;) @Chris I think I found a video of similar testing on YouTube, I'll try to find it again. So you have a wire connected to the phone that transfers the vibration from the rod?

*NOTE* I had started typing this up over the past few days before this thread was started, I want to add at the top here a couple things I think are important and are common from just about all the threads I've looked into about this. First everybody has their own thoughts/ feelings/experience on the matter and have the right to hold and express them. We ought to listen and think critically ab

@Tom @Matt is spot on, going back decades I never see CCS asked about or presented for all those other categories of fishing. Pretty much see it mostly for bass/ fresh water and fly. And again - this is not for industry adoption, everybody here already has an idea of correlation as they share a blank recommendation of IP 436g AA79 to someone looking for a medium xf. Everybody here has a range

I still recommend that *everybody* here follow the Shimano method for measuring sensitivity, its a simple test I laid out the steps for on page 11. If you follow those simple steps please post your results here to appease the crowd. Grace and peace, El

@Kevin - I'm pretty sure Gary Loomis had a hand in some BPS and Cabelas rods, depends on when they were made. That Eternity blank was moderate or the Cabelas blank was not? @Kendall thanks for sharing part of your process for picking a blank. And I agree, more consistency would go a long way for some of these companies. @Les - thanks for sharing. I was part of that discussion Mick started,

@Matt thank you very much for sharing your thoughts on the matter, definitely helpful! @Kevin - and I guess @Tom too but I'm sure you've been in the business long enough to know, most companies do not have any interest in actually providing accurate quantifiable data for their blanks or rods because it would lead to informed consumer purchases and less sales in general which means less profit

Also @Tom - I just bumped into this quote of yours (from ) "I designed the casting weight range formula for the CCS." and that's essentially the same thing as saying you have designed a formula to label CCS data with English rod speak counter parts. Again, everybody has a different medium, it could be 1/4-5/8 or 3/16-1/2, but you have determined a way to figure out correlating lure rati
