I tried cutting a few blank butts with my dremel and it was erratic. I took out my fine toothed hacksaw and it was alot easier. Dremel was better at the tip tops. Ernie

I see that most books call to put the unibutt ferrule on first and then move to the grips and guides. Is there any reason why this is recommended versus putting the unibutt ferrule on last? I would think it would be easier to wrap without the ferrule on it. Thanks Ernie

Mike J; I am building a 50lb stand up shark rod and am using CP. Every layer of thread get both CP and epoxy. Then I am putting on a couple more coats of thin epoxy. I will know later this year if it holds up...lol.. I know Doc Ski uses a ton of CP and I don't think he has issues. Now you got me to thinking about my boomer jr rod I am going to start..cp or not... Eddie's shop is run by his son, as Eddie passed away about 1.5- 2 years ago from cancer. If you are going up route 11 from Patten (Millinocket) towards Ashland stop in Alvin Therrieult (sp) shop. If you are into feathers, it is a great treat. He has many animals on the farm including Jungle Cock. Just look for the orange sign with huge Fly on it. I would also recommend stopping in at Cha

Jay, I've used a fine hacksaw blade for the heavier salt water rods and no problems either. I use a dremel to start the cut though. Ernie

Ok thanks, I read those articles in the magazine, but have been using the book as a guideline. So if I used the procedure outlined in the book, which calls for cleaning, what are the chances of the bond breaking down in the near term? I assume it is fairly low? thanks

On the topic of Alchol wipes, you posted never to use them after scouring the surface..lest you loose the water break free, etc.. But..in your book you wrote to wipe the surface with alcohol after scouring (pages 19 and 24, I believe). This was for installing the grip and the reel seat. Maybe I am understanding this wrong? thanks Ernie

Hi Guys, Thanks for the reply. What I want to do (copy) is in the link below.. See how the blue is right under the guide and is not interposed with the black wrapping thread..I think Raymond you hit the nail on the head and if I can just practice this correctly...! Ernie

I am planning to underwrap my saltwater guides. I want under each roller/guide about 1-2mm of different color thread. I am planning on going from black to HT metallic for this. I know how to do this if I want to use the wrapping thread and an inlay, but my question is if I switch from the black wrapping thread to the HT mettallic and then back to the black thread, do I need to tie off the b

Thank Fred, I tried that last nite and figured it would take me forever to do... I'm thinking of trying it again tonight while I watch 24.. I was going to try to make a PVC chuck and use my drill, but being of a non-mechnical nature, I sort of figured I would wreck the rest of the rod.. ernie

Fred, et al.. My Hypalon is on the blank. I know now I should have tapered it before putting on the blank.. I do not have a lathe, so how would you recommend tapering the fit? I may just have to use it as straight grip. Looks a little funny, but not too bad.. Any advice is much appreciated. Ernie

Does anyone recomend after you prep (properly) your black guides to seal the ends with black magic marker and a couple coats of CP? I was planning on double overwrapping the WO guides in D thread (each with a coat of CP) I was wondering if you did not use a magic marker the bare steel may offset the color of the overwrap? Thanks, Ernie

Tom, Are you saying to go with the 0.5 inch? thanks Ernie

I have read Tom's book and FAQ section and did a search, but have a real quick question: I have blank where the end of foregrip is 0.8 (ID) and with the length on want it goes down to 0.64 inches (ID). This being said, it was mentioned on larger diameter grips (I am assuming 0.5 and above) it will stretch 1.2 to 1.5 its Inner Diameter. So if I use a 14inch grip with an ID of 0.5, I wil

203. rodbond
I know that you are not supposed to use the syringes and cups that come with kids medicine for thread epoxy due to silicon release. What about rodbond? I have so many of those damn cups lying around that I was curious? Also, do you have to be as precise as with thread expoxy? Thanks Ernie

Red ,blue and yellow, but color is really a spectrum...about 400 to 700 nanometers. Just remember you perceive a different color if you add OBA's to the final product. OBA's are optical brightning agents. OBA's are seen in the UV sprectrum..measuring color with UV on versus UV off gives the person a flourescence index.. Enough on color theory, color is personal and I like the bright neon col
