I am also going to Maine in early June to spend a week canoeing and fishing the northern Allagash.
Any info on shops or contacts will be most appreciated. - Thanks If people spent more time on important things, there would be a shortage of flyrods. Re: fly/rod building shops in Maine.

It's great to hear Eddie's is still in business, and I recommend stopping in there. I hung out there more than I should have in college, for several reasons (a targeted potential girlfriend had an apartment next door), and that was in the early '80's. Even if you're staying in the Bangor area, get up to the Baxter SP / Golden Road / Millinocket area and the Moosehead region. There also used to be a very good smallmouth fishery in the Stillwater River on the UMO campus. Enjoy.

If you make your way up to Millinocket, you can catch 2 lb. smallmouth all day long right in the middle of town. I did. I used a little Rebel crawfish or Rapala on a light power spinning rod just standing on the shoulder of the road. This time of year, the fish might be even more aggressive since they will be in the pre-spawn period. Up on the West Branch Penobscot below Ripogenus Dam is a killer landlocked salmon fishery. My advice, give the shops some business and then go fishing. I've been amazed at the quality fishing every time I've gone up there. Edited 1 time(s). Eddie's shop is run by his son, as Eddie passed away about 1.5- 2 years ago from cancer.
If you are going up route 11 from Patten (Millinocket) towards Ashland stop in Alvin Therrieult (sp) shop. If you are into feathers, it is a great treat. He has many animals on the farm including Jungle Cock. Just look for the orange sign with huge Fly on it. I would also recommend stopping in at Chandler Pond outfitters in Winthrop on your ride up. They have a great selection of feathers. If you are fishing the WB, make sure you have some streamers with blue into it. The smelt there tend to have a blue shade versus purple..imo.
