Norm,
I was sort of hoping you'd add a response . Didn't want to pester you for fear of wearing out my welcome . All that's left to say now is "sold" .

Very much appreciated Mr. Erickson . Since Mr. Taylor pointed out NFC's Black Friday Sale , I'm seriously thinking about the F 906-2 Classic . But Mr. Phipps' comment about the RX7 being good

Rich,
Found both the Arctos and Matrix blanks but it seems that Utmost Enterprises only carries Mr. Batson's blanks now ??
Thanks again.

If you haven't already , you might want to go to the NFC web site and open their carbon grips catalog . I built with a VSS 17 and have been very happy with the NFC carbon grips . It's my understanding that their soft touch grips are not available for the VSS 17 - just the standard carbon grips . Oh , be sure to scroll down through the entire catalog - some specific parts for Fuji are listed later

Mr. Phipps,
Really appreciate your advice . From what I've read , NFC makes a high quality blank but , even looking through the catalog on their site , I didn't find information about the material . Then again my wife has always said I can look right at something and not see it . May I ask what you meant by "easy to live with" in regards to the RX7 rods ?
Thank you .

Mr. Rose ,
Thank you very much . I generally use a fly with a hook size no larger than #4 but mostly #6 to #8 with emphasis toward the #8 . Perhaps that is why I was able to enjoy my 7 weight Fenwick ?? I know very little about these things - just that it's a tremendous amount of fun . I appreciate the input on the NFC Classic .

I am a rank novice who has built two spinning rods with extensive tutoring from Norm Miller ( the man is an amazingly tolerant saint ) . I would like to start gathering / reading as much information on fly rod builds as I can so that I might be able to cobble one together over the Winter . In Mr. Kirkman's book , he states fly rod builds are similar to spinning builds so hopefully my limited expe

Cory,
I'm new to this also having completed only a couple of builds . I lurked and read numerous post and the large majority suggested Fuji's KR concept guides . I have used the KL-H reduction guides that Mark and Leslie suggest and the KBs and KTs they suggest on both of my builds and I promise you that you can not go wrong with these guides . ( the little KTs can be a little difficult to wrap

Yes sir . You're exactly right . That's why I only use around 4-5 foot of it as a leader . Sorry , I should express myself better

If a tyro made add an opinion here , I simply can't get FC lines to work for me on my spinning rigs . I broke down an spent the $$$ on some 8# Tatsu and still had so many problems with line twist that I gave up . I can tolerate an occasional birds nest with casting gear but , to me , it's completely out of place with a spinning rig . My life is much better with Norman Miller's suggested braid wit

I was wondering why even the high end rod blanks generally have a wave/curve/bend toward the tip . Please don't get me wrong , I'm a rank novice and in no way am I complaining - just want to understand . I would think the mandrel would be made completely straight but can't understand why the blank that comes off it would be curved ? I guess it's not a functional problem but I'm just curious . Tha

Thank you David . It is exactly these qualities that caused me to start researching carbon grips . I hesitated to ask about any differences in sensitivity because the subject seems to be a little controversial here . Thanks again .

Thanks again for all the input . I'm afraid I'm not capable enough yet to jump into building my own grips . Just a novice researching components for my next build . If handling characteristics are equal to or only slightly better than cork and weight is less but by so slight an amount , it seems that durability would be the only practical reason to choose carbon over cork . But then again like Mr

Tom, John, and David ,
Thank you for helping me with this . It seems the consensus is that carbon is superior to cork on all fronts . The possible exception to this is if your hands are slippery from fish slime but , hey , that's what your jeans are for :) Thanks again ..

I have searched numerous times in the archives here but can't find information concerning the pros and cons of using carbon grips rather than cork grips . I know it has to have been discussed but I simply can't find those discussions . If someone would suggest what search terms I should use , I would appreciate it .
Thanks .

Hitena also list 8/0 (AAA) on their web site but only in 100 yd spools and their NCP is only to 6/0 (AA).

Thanks Mr. Danek . I have no doubt that , if I can get her built , the rod will fish better than I do . As far as improving with time and experience - I would rather try to get it close on

Good thing beauty isn't a criteria . This first build of mine my end up looking like a toad to most folks but I have a feeling it'll turn into a prince to me :)
