Hi Les , all of your questions can be found in the archives . Yes, many here have used two guides and I believe I even heard a single guide for a reduction train but everybody who has tried or gone that route utilizes light braid with them because light braid is so supple and forgiving that it can work with most any layout even poor layouts . It is for this reason that I spool up with a hea

Yes, I use the KR reduction train groups . For spinning I typically go KL20H - KL10H - 5.5M to size 5 runners . I don't have any conventional setups so I won't comment on that . I never use 4 guide reduction trains even on longer rods and that's because there is zero need to with braid in the 15 pound and under range . I follow what the KR concept suggests for choke guide location on m

Les, in the past a larger reel typically did indicate a larger line size no doubt about it but these days things are so much different . As technology has advanced especially over the last 20 or so years braided lines have become extremely advanced compared to how they were when first introduced . I have been using lighter braided lines exclusively over the last 30 years for all my surf fishin

Line type and size is the # 1 determining factor much more so than even spinning reel specs since I have tested spinning reels with huge diameter spools and spinning reels with much much smaller diameter spools and there is zero difference between them IF the line you happen to be using is supple braid 20 pounds and under. Only when you use heavier less supple lines will spool sizes start show

I didn't see an HS 981 on the site , I did find the HS 821-1 which has the length and lure range that suits me . 3/4 - 4 ounce . On the heavy side but will work better than what I currently have.

Yeah I asked about that one a long time ago and it did seem suitable but I chose to go with an X RAY 7109 instead which is a little short of 8 feet but close enough and the lure rating fit which was up to up to 2 ounce. I may need to try the HS 981 because even though the 7109 is rated up to 2 ounce I find It a little soft and you have to really lob 2 ounce stuff with it . Thanks for t

Disappointed to say the least , 7'6" max length and no models that even have a lure weight rating of 1 ounce . The current X RAY models are better suited for inshore fishing imo . I'm probably in the minority though as I need 8 feet minimum length and lure ratings exceeding 1 ounce.

Go as small as you can get away with , all my surf rods have size 5 runners on them and it's a night and day difference from the overwhelming majority of surf rods out there that usually have size 8's at a minimum with size 10 to 12 being more standard . Fuji makes it clear in their literature that size 3.5 is the smallest anybody should ever go and the reason is going smaller than that could end

Very interesting Aleks , so that means that any blanks that still have that at the butt end are not defective after all . Glad that's cleared up .

Waxes that contain a cleaner even a very mild cleaner will result in what Dennis describes over time that's why I never ever use them.

A quality carnauba wax works fantastic . Never had a problem applying or removing .

This seems to have turned into a " Is Torzite the only ring material that holds up to braid " thread which is unfortunate . For most anglers virtually any semi modern ceramic ring is more than adequate to handle any modern braid of any strength and diameter without grooving . Torzite is something that is chosen when somebody wants the absolute lightest and slickest ceramic ring mat

Fuji admits Torzite is not quite as hard as SIC but it's definitely more slippery . The fact that it offers a thinner ring is just one advantage . You can witness for yourself just how much more slippery it is compared to other ring materials on the CTS blog. I only use it on my very best highest performing surf rod builds because it's definitely not cheap . As somebody else indicated you can

Torzite is extremely slippery , more so than any other guide ring material on the market right now imo . I use Torzite on my surf rod builds and they perform incredibly well , most will not be able to tell a difference between ring materials . CTS did a big write up about Torzite and you can see for yourself how it compares to other ring materials .

Line type and size is the # 1 determining factor when it comes to choosing spinning guide transitional ring sizes with spool diameter coming in a distant second .

Toms recommendation of only applying the epoxy in a room with a temp of AT LEAST 70 F is critical to getting good results . I found that out the hard way and had all types of issues when I attempted to apply finish in rooms that weren't warm enough .

Not everything needs data to back it up, a lot of it comes down to basic common sense . A blank deflected by a certain amount on it's softest axis is not going to have the exact same recovery speed of a blank deflected by the same amount on it's stiffest axis .

I love the Winn Grip overwraps , those have been awesome on some of my surf rods and have held up great even after multiple years of heavy use . I figured a 96" overwrap is about $20.00 so I decided to try it, no big loss if it didn't work out but it has worked out great . Sometimes you just got to try things for yourself and go against the grain . Now if the cost was considerably mor
