The key to using paraffin or beeswax (much prefer the latter) is you MUST apply a wafer thin (invisible) coating each and every time you assemble the rod and you MUST completely remove it each and every time you disassemble the rod IF you want to use either without facing any negative consequences .
The reason for this is as others stated to avoid contamination . If you leave either of

Rod blank manufacturers are fiercely competitive but if I had to give one blank manufacturer the edge at this point in time I would give it to NFC for their C602 material .

Ha ha ha ha ha Got me there Ernie . I think people who are regulars on Rodbuilding.org tend to know that their ability is a critical factor much more so than the general angling population .

Wasn't referring to you Jon , I can tell you know exactly what you want and understand what your ability level is. I was speaking strictly in general terms as I have come across countless people over the years that wonder why their high performance setup isn't producing the performance that they had expected and what other people with the same equipment are achieving .

I didn't think we had to bring up the obvious about an anglers ability . Of course you need an angler that is capable of squeezing all the performance out of the blanks that are capable of performing at the very highest level .
Unfortunately there are a ton of anglers out there that found out after spending substantial amounts of money that the most important factor of all is the anglers abil

Jon , nobody said a higher modulus rod equals a better quality rod . The only thing that has been said is that higher modulus material is capable of storing and releasing more energy thus is capable of performing on a higher level IF the design is just as sound .
Bamboo and fiberglass rods aren't capable of storing and releasing the kind of energy that a modern high modulus rod is capable of b

First time I've heard an opinion that Loomis fly blanks are middle of the road . They get praised like no other especially the Asquith and NRX . Haven't heard anything about how good the NFC fly blanks are but I'm sure they are very good.
I agree with Michaels comment below:

All my shorter rods have longer rear grips than what most typically use but that's my personal preference . I need the ability to cast as far as possible where I fish so the longer handle allows that . For the application you explained you will be using it for , it may be a little too long but it's already completed so live and learn .
Never guess on handle length , temporarily attach the

I have a single foot KLH surf rod build that I use for lighter stuff and while those guides are much more suited for freshwater and much lighter saltwater applications my butt guide has never moved or shifted in any way .
I could see it happening if the guide type and size is a major mismatch especially if you're spooling up with heavier lines but having it loosen the way you explained it is

Les- Line Type Determines Butt Guide Ring Size.
Chris- Not just line type but reel specs and spool diameter also comes into play they just come in secondary to line type and size .

I have followed the KR concept calculations for my inshore rods that use KR Concept single foots because Fuji did a great job with it and it just flat out works . There's very little tweaking you can do that will improve on it .
Now with the RV's I find Tom Kirkman's 27 X method ideal for figuring out the best choke guide location . I typically start where the 27X method indicates and adju

So this is a NGC build not a KR concept which is fine . Not sure if you're going with the high frame KW 30 which has a height of 61.2 MM or the low frame which has a height of 50.4 MM but that dip to a KW 16 with either 30 size just isn't going to fit well height wise but the KW 20 will . A KW12M is higher in height than a KW16 but the two KWM guides Fuji came out with, KW12M/KW10M were des

Hi Ken , what line do you plan on spooling up with and what type of fishing are you going to be doing if you don't mind me asking ? Sounds like casting distance is of importance to you and from your post it appears you plan on using braid in the 20-30 pound range on your 12K size reel . The single foot KR concept guides are best for braids 20 pounds and under but depending on the line choice yo

I don't think I've ever come across a blank where perfectly progressive guide spacing ended up being the best possible layout in the end . There are always locations on blanks where a guide or two or even three will not fit the perfectly spaced progressive look that most want in the end IF ones goal is a truly perfect guide setup . There may be sections in a blank that may require two guides

Non progressive spacing will not in any way decrease performance . Most want a rod that looks correct and that means having progressive spacing and there is nothing wrong with that . It will in many cases require adjustments that fall slightly outside the recommendations by Fuji and ones own testing but good luck noticing any performance differences especially when spooling up with light braid

Hi Les , all of your questions can be found in the archives . Yes, many here have used two guides and I believe I even heard a single guide for a reduction train but everybody who has tried or gone that route utilizes light braid with them because light braid is so supple and forgiving that it can work with most any layout even poor layouts .
It is for this reason that I spool up with a hea

Yes, I use the KR reduction train groups . For spinning I typically go KL20H - KL10H - 5.5M to size 5 runners .
I don't have any conventional setups so I won't comment on that . I never use 4 guide reduction trains even on longer rods and that's because there is zero need to with braid in the 15 pound and under range .
I follow what the KR concept suggests for choke guide location on m

Les, in the past a larger reel typically did indicate a larger line size no doubt about it but these days things are so much different . As technology has advanced especially over the last 20 or so years braided lines have become extremely advanced compared to how they were when first introduced . I have been using lighter braided lines exclusively over the last 30 years for all my surf fishin

Line type and size is the # 1 determining factor much more so than even spinning reel specs since I have tested spinning reels with huge diameter spools and spinning reels with much much smaller diameter spools and there is zero difference between them IF the line you happen to be using is supple braid 20 pounds and under.
Only when you use heavier less supple lines will spool sizes start show

I didn't see an HS 981 on the site , I did find the HS 821-1 which has the length and lure range that suits me . 3/4 - 4 ounce .
On the heavy side but will work better than what I currently have.
