The best thing to do is contact Sage and tell them the rod is clearly defective because it was only able to cast a few measly feet , don't forget to tell them the exact method you used to test it . I wonder what kind of distance I could expect with attempting to cast a spinner or casting rod with nothing tied to the end of the line , my guess is a few feet tops .

I don't go crazy with brushes but I also don't care for the throw away types that are explained above either , I prefer brushes with widths that are a little less wide than the width's of my wraps and I like a rather stiff brush . I have tried quite a few types and either they're way too narrow for my liking , they lose their bristles way too easy or they're way too soft . I find wider brush

I shouldn't have to repeat this stuff but here we go again . David said that his rod clearly performed on a much higher level when he added weight to it , the fact is when he added weight to the butt it made the rod much more balanced for him thus making it much more comfortable to fish with and he attributed that comfort to adding additional weight to the butt which was why he thought the rod

We must all remember and this is part of the problem that I can see confuses the OP , there is a mix of facts in this thread like ' Basic physics' and then there is a bunch of opinions and deep personal preferences that don't particularly care for those facts and it's very important to be able to distinguish between the two . The latter is to be expected and accepted it's when strong pers

Kent has a very high opinion of Gary Loomis as I think we all do , Gary has very strong opinions on weight , he has repeatedly said weight is the # 1 enemy of rod performance and weight of any kind is never ever a positive thing . There has been physics lessons in this thread by extremely intelligent individuals and all types of information provided by knowledgeable contributors. Many experim

I'm going to morph into Phil E for a minute . David , you say by adding weight to the butt of your rod it performed on a much higher level ? Proof please , you admit your timing was bad with the 'Bow & Arrow technique , well then you must attend a seminar on improving your timing then. I'm not going anywhere , I'll be right here waiting . In all seriousness it goes directly against

OK here's where we're at , some people build with ultimate performance in mind and weight reduction is a major priority to them , some people prioritize appearance the most , some people prefer a mix of both appearance and performance and some people keep trying to figure out how other people are able to detect subtle difference in weight while they cannot.

Well of course a less skilled rider on a lighter bike will show little performance increase compared to a rider who's at the top of their game . Same with fishing rods , give an outstanding performance rod built for maximum distance to somebody who is an average caster at best and I can guarantee that person WILL NOT be able to tell a difference between their rod and the rod that's much more capa

Todd : If it is such an issue, there should be some studies of some kind including human judgement. There is NO ISSUE . never has been an issue it's basic common sense Todd . On another note, any chance you're related to Phil E ? Here's the problem , Tom has already repeatedly mentioned that the thing to do is if you're really interested in this topic is to do the tests that he explai

Todd, does it really matter if you believe this stuff or not ? I mean you have stated you're very happy with what you build and everybody else has said they're very happy with their rods . I think it's a huge win for everybody .

It's not just fishing rods where weight is the # 1 enemy to performance , Moto GP bike teams and race car teams do every and anything to shave off a 10th of an ounce here or there and these machines are heavy . Any additional weight is a curse and often mean the difference between winning and losing. You think the average joe will be able to tell the difference if an eighth of an ounce is shav

Well one thing we know with certainty , no matter how much you try to explain how weight in any form is the # 1 enemy of rod performance you can only do so much in attempting to explain it . People have made it very very clear where they stand on the issue. Some thankfully admit that building the lightest possible rod is not a priority to them . Others thankfully admit that they can't wrap thei

I know how important it is to keep companies who manufacture blanks in the USA thriving , I need no convincing . I as many others were disappointed to not see NFC on the sponsors list for a while that's all , it really appeared that you guys left us . I'm thrilled that you did not and are back better than ever . Thank you for the confirmation and please keep the info about new happenings comin

Wrapping a few inches past the end of the guide foot ( Which well over 90% of builders do if you look through the photos section ) which will also be covered with additional epoxy is accomplishing essentially the same thing as using a heaver guide train . Sure you can choose a lighter weight guide train which is a smart move but if you do the above you have just taken away all of that lighter g

NFC has apparently changed their mind and renewed their sponsorship , I still don't see their name on the sponsorship list yet but it must be coming since you cannot post about company products or advertise in any way unless you're a sponsor . Smart move to come back .

I think you're downplaying the skill required to be able to succeed at creating beautiful decorative wraps . I think building a rod strictly for performance is 100% easier than what it takes to become very proficient at doing decorative wraps . What's difficult about building a rod with a focus on the best performance possible ? Granted, knowing specific reel & line characteristics and how

I'm convinced very very few build for ultimate performance , I agree that the talk is often about performance but spending some time in the archives looking at photos is all it takes to be convinced that appearance is clearly a priority over the best possible performance . The overwhelming majority of the images show guide wraps that extend at least twice the length of the entire guide foot or

Phil, you got to stop pretending that much higher quality and more expensive rods and firearms and many other things for that matter don't have a clear and decisive performance advantage over much much lower cost items . Go through the motions with a Loomis Asquith and compare it to a $200.00 fly rod of your choice . If you think the performance is similar and have a hard time distinguishing t

Norms 'Bamboo' recommendation is fantastic . I used a razor in the past and the only thing I will use a razor for these days is cutting through the finish and thread directly over the metal foot of the guide I want to remove . That's really all you need a razor for although it does work great for scraping etc... I have made costly mistakes when using one in the past so now I stay away . Bad ey

If you're capable of building a 'CLEAN' rod and understand the basics you can be successful at selling rods . You don't need to be a true master in every aspect of rod building but it certainly helps, I have no doubt about that. The only rods I have sold were rods I built for myself that I decided after fishing them for a while were too long and cumbersome for me . I sometimes forget I'm not

As I have said before I think the majority of rod builders build because of the ability to fish and enjoy something that they themselves created and that's a special thing . On another note , most people even on these boards ARE NOT expert fisherman , that is not a requirement to want to fish the best performing rod possible . I'm also convinced the majority of anglers are perfectly happy

Anything added to a blank that's not an absolute necessity will decrease the performance of the blank . Any increase in weight slows the recovery of a blank and even the little things add up . That extra inch and a half of thread you decide to use that extends past the end of the guide foot will also require more epoxy to cover it . Add an extra inch and a half of thread on each guide foot an

I personally only questioned the performance of my gear months after I dropped fishing freshwater and took up surf fishing very seriously . I fished lower end off the shelf big department store surf rods for a while and was not thrilled with the performance I was getting but not thoroughly disgusted either but one day I found myself in a specialty shop with much higher end rods with much higher

Trim wraps and bling in general can still be utilized on even the most weight critical builds by just taking a little different approach to it . I'm an extreme minimalist when it comes to rod builds in particular surf rod builds , I don't even use winding checks and my wraps are as short as humanly possible but I don't like bland and ugly either . On my last two builds in particular I wanted mo

Phil makes a great point when he said " No evidence supports claims that rods built by individuals are superior to performance of factory built rods" which I agree with 100% . I can't tell you how many times I have heard individuals say a 'Custom' will be superior and I never bought into it . My argument was always that if a custom is built on the same blank as the factory rod with sim
