From the image it doesn't look like any fibers were damaged , looks like a light scape shouldn't cause any issues . When you run a fingernail across it does your nail catch it ?

I think you're referring to spine orientation and how Tom tested dozens of blanks and documented their failure points . We just went through all that a few weeks ago with many members chiming in . It was ugly and seemed to never end . Many of us are still attempting to recover from that thread to this very day .

"Do you mean the cone angle from guide to guide or do you mean that the imaginary line that runs from guide centre to guide centre should get steeper as the guides get smaller" I mean the guide ring sizes are way too close in diameter and when guide ring sizes are way too close in diameter to each other you aren't getting nearly the benefit from them you're just adding a lot of u

"You think 65lb is daft? Pfft try GT chasers who want to use 120lb braid with 300lb mono leaders. For goodness sakes" Did Denham say this setup was specifically for fishing GT's because I can't find where he mentioned that . If it's not then 'Yes' , without question 65 pound braid is ridiculous in the overwhelming majority of surfcasting scenarios for anything other than large s

If the 27 X method showed an 80 inch choker position then that reel spool lip diameter is as large as the one I use for surf fishing which is a little over 75 mm . As far as moving in the choke from 80" to 70 inches , I have done that numerous times in the past BUT not with heavier braid it just doesn't work well at all , with lighter braid it works incredibly well but not with 50-65 pound

Wow , that reel is a beast weighing close to 30 ounces and holding 440 yards of 65 pound test . DO NOT go up to a 40 KW it's totally unnecessary , even the 30 is large but it looks to me that it's one of the very few that fits well for the Saltist spec's and line choice. First thing to do is get the reel seat position located based on your friends preferences that's # 1 . After that's done

Russell don't worry about the reel size at all the differences in spool diameters between small Shimano spinners from the 1000 up to the 4000 sizes are extremely minimal and will have no perceptible effect on casting distances when using line as light as you plan on using . The biggest differences in reels this small are not with spool lip diameters they're with line capacity meaning spool depth

Tipsie dust is just a grounded up hot melt adhesive . The manufacturer states that all tip top adhesives are just regular craft glue sticks but that's not true and they know it .

Stick Shellac for attaching broadheads , now we're talking about a VERY long time ago ( BC era) when Zwickey broadheads and Bear broadheads ruled . Screw in's have been the norm for decades . You don't heat the tip of the rod blank to install a tip top Phil you heat the hot melt or the tube with hot melt already inside . There's no way you will overheat a tip top if you used hot melt glue to

My last surf rod build on a 10'6 CTS I went with a KL25H , KL12H to a 5.5M then KB 5's - KT 5's and it works amazingly well but that's only because I use 10 -14 pound braid on it exclusively . Keep in mind that those KR concept single foot's are not robust guides and care will be needed to make sure they don't get banged around especially on a surf rod. Fuji clearly did not have surf rod build

Well that makes it pretty easy to figure out , it's either Flex Coat 5 minute epoxy, Devcon 5 minute epoxy, ProGlue 5 minute epoxy, ProPaste fast set epoxy or Threadmaster Optimum 5 minute epoxy.

When I travel to and from fishing locations my rods are never left out in the open anyway they're inside long flannel sleeves at a minimum and often slid into a large crush proof tube, never in direct sunlight or near a dashboard. I do understand that people who have experienced repeated tip top issues trying to prevent the issue from continuing to happen by using some other type of adhesive .

I have noticed little to no perceptible differences in casting distances when spooling with extremely light braids ( 4 -6 pounds) regardless of spool diameters on super small spinners. I attribute that to the fact that UL outfits don't have the blank power and ability to cast the weight ranges that result in 100+ yard casts where spool emptying & friction really becomes a factor . If using

Wade , I do it the way you mentioned with sticking a few slivers into the tip top tube and heat . I find installing tip tops the easiest task of all rod building procedures to do . The only problem I have run into on occasion is finding the slivers of hot melt after I slice them off the hot melt glue stick but I attribute that to age and my failing eyesight . Use a small pair of locking needle

You might find the below review discussing Sea guides version of Fuji's K guides helpful . As far as somebody that carries all the Fuji guides I don't know of any because I have looked everywhere over the past few years for guides that I know Fuji makes but nobody seems to stock them or even list that they're available . I have unfortunately had to go international to purchase certain guide siz

I don't think I've ever seen a ferrule wrap that also has trim wraps , that would look very odd and it would get my attention right away as being out of place UNLESS it was a part of a guide wrap .

NFC is not one of the companies that says ferrule wraps are not required , Batson is the same . You got to know who you're dealing with because as said previously some companies still say wrap them and some companies have made it very clear that it's totally unnecessary . I would always listen to what the manufacturer says .

Contact Herb L at HNL rod blanks he's listed directly above CTS on the sponsors list . CTS will build you an outstanding 12 foot surf blank in a 50/50 split and build it to your specs . I ordered a couple myself and told them what modulus MSI I wanted them to use in the butt section and the tip section and what type of taper etc... . I did pay a designers fee since they didn't have that design

There are just as many absolute facts out there as there are opinions the problem is there is many people in todays world that don't understand the differences. It's taken quite some time and it can still be a struggle but I have learned it's best to let these people believe what they want to believe and move on.

I love the way Tom answers questions . If a commenter is clearly wrong about something he will quickly correct them and that's the way it should be , direct and to the point and the best part is that It's NEVER in a harsh or offensive manner .

Conclusive facts or a study ? It's P. Ewanicki again posing as David Taylor , dang it Phil you got to knock this stuff off . There isn't going to be any studies or facts about whether ferrule wrapping is necessary , just like everything else in fishing it's preference based. Some will always do it because they like the way they look , some will always do it because they feel the build is

I haven't used PG for thread coating but have used it to coat blanks . Can't beat it for coating blanks but it seems to me if it was considerably lighter in weight than regular epoxy and provided outstanding protection it would be used much much more than it appears to be these days for guide wraps . Maybe it's the traditional "varnish" appearance that Tom mentioned that isn't as app

I don't wrap the ferrules on my CTS surf blanks which are 50/50 splits and they have seen heavy usage. The appearance is much cleaner , it keeps the middle part of the blank lighter and the blanks look much more like a one piece in appearance . You have to really look for the join to notice the split there is no big long wrap making it stand out . Some manufacturers have made it very clear that
