Are you planning on using 3 reduction guides between the choke guide and the Ardent 2500 reel face? My calculation has the choke guide at 47.8 inches or 121.4cm from the reel face. With 3 additional reduction guides between the chocker and the reel face I am at a loss to see how you come up with the 25mm guide at 28” from the reel. Maybe I am doing something wrong but am trying to understand

Question for Tom or anyone? I use this method but when test casting I don't see any difference in the casts when I move the guides up and down somewhat. I even removed some guides and again the test casts seem to me to be about the same. Any suggestions on casting methods or procedures would be appreciated. TIA

I believe that you will find these guides on page 92 of the 2010 Mud Hole Catalog.

I use the second guide foot from the reel to hold my lure during transport and find that a hook keeper next to the butt handle or close to it is not practical for me. Do most folks use or require a hook keeper on spinning rods?

For what it is worth I use Tru-oil on my cork spinning rod handles and apply several coats wih some light sanding between coats. I fish from a float tube and my rod handles are always wet but I don't have any problems with the cork being slick or hard to hold onto. After a year of hard use a light sanding and a new coat of Tru-oil brings back the old luster and I find the handles are easy to ke

I found that the best results for me were to let the first coat dry over night and then apply the second coat. I assume you are referring to the guide wraps and other wraps.

Assuming that you are warping the single foot guide from left to right with the thread coming over the top of the blank. When you start the Forhan locking wrap place one security wrap around the blank in front of the guide and then on the next wrap place the thread in front of the guide foot and then bring it immediately back over the guide ring/foot and then back in front of the guide and bac

You may want to pick some G Loomis GLX rod blanks before they are no longer available. I believe MudHole still has a few left. I don't believe that you will find a better blank to build your custom rods. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all.

Forhan wrap on all single foot guides. Quick, easy and looks good. Only negative is that the guides are slightly harder to move for alignment. Just take a little more time during the initial setting/placement of the guide prior to starting the wrap.

My 7' spinning rods balance when held by one finger just even with the reel spool lip or a little bit forward of that point. Does this seem right? The reel mounted also affects the balance point for me.

I like to use 3 coats of light applications for each one and I let the rod dry overnight. The first coat seems to penetrate the threads and then the second/thrid coats cover the threads where you don't see the individual threads. I once had to remove a guide after the first coat and I found that the finish had leached or seeped under the guide foot and really made a good bond to the rod base. I p

My son in law died of a massive heart attack at the age of 38! He had no outward signs that anything was wrong and was active in work & sports. He left a loving wife and 2 young sons and did not have any life insurance. I am a firm believer that everyone should have a physical and most important some type of a stress test!!! Don't keep putting this off!! JMHO

What is the optimum point on a rod/reel that you can test for balance for both casting & spinning?? Any special method for this test, lure attached and in a horizontal position, etc??

When wrapping guides how many wraps and/or length do you have in front of the guide foot and should this be the same for all of the guides or graduated as you move to each smaller guide in progression?

I have received several Loomis blanks from Mudhole and all of them were straight where you could not see any appreciable curve or any other type of deformity. I believe that Mudhole checks their blanks when they receive them from the manufacture & return any that do not meet their requirements. JMHO

Should the guide ring face be at 90 degrees to the foot or slightly forward or does it matter?

I need to know if I should use 7 or 8 guides plus Tip on a 7' spinning rod using a 3000 model reel. I am unable to see any difference from static testing between 7 and 8, Thanks for all of your help.

Do not take a rod into a room with the ceiling fan turned on! Big mistake!

It appears to me that the distance between guides 3 & 4 in static picture # 1 is less than the distance between guides 2 & 3 but it may be the way the picture is oriented. I always thought that the distance between the guides should increase as you start from the TIP with the first guide between 4” & 5 “ from the TIP. On a 7’ spinning rod that I built I have 7 guides + a TIP.

I have used the rubberized composite cork rings without a hole from Mud Hole for my butt ring and they seem to be holding up quite well. I did not have any problems with gluing/sanding the rings and I used TruOil for the finish.

With light salt water use I have seen NO problems with corrosion for the soft touch. I always rinse the rods after each use, both rods and reels. I would suggest that you cover the reel seats with masking tape during the install as for me this makes the clean up process easier after the epoxy has set. Hope this helps.

I just received a shipment of cork rings, SCR 2B, from Mud Hole and the quality of the rings is what I would call outstanding. I have read about some folks here having problems getting good cork rings recently and if so you should give Mud Hole a call!

I fish from a float tube and my rod cork handle is generally wet. I have found that the Tru-Oil finish does not seem to cause the handle to be slippery when wet. I also apply the finish with my finger. Over time you can lightly sand and re-apply the fimish for a new look. I always tape the reel seat and rod when applying the finish.

I use 10lb mono loops with a double overhand knot. The mono loop seems to stand up slightly so that it is easy to insert the end of the thread prior to pulling it through. Never had one break. FWIW
