121. Ghost wraps
Wanted to say thanks to those that had posted or provided input in the past on silk ghost wraps. My first time doing them and they came out great
Hitena AAA “natural” color silk and I thinned my first coat of a Gen4 finish 1 part resin / 1 part hardener / 1 part acetone. Also flooded the wraps with acetone before applying finish which helped with bubbles in the tunnels. Follow on coats were

Fly rod and a bass rod are very different things in how they are fished and thus how balance would come into play or not

I have not weighted rods before - but when I built my challenge rod for the IBRC, that 7'6 blank was SOOOO tip-heavy, and building it as a general purpose bass rod I felt it had to have some balance - even with a 10" handle. I ended up needing to put about 1.5 oz in the butt to give it balance....

You can buy fiberglass "corner markers" at the hardware store - used to mark corners of property so the snow plows don't run over them and such.... they are typically orange but paint them to liking, or you'll be slatering colored epoxt on them anyway :)
Or - wooden dowels - on these I like to spray with a coat of gloss paint and maybe a hard clear if I'm using them to practice wra

Batson was represented in a number of ways at the show - HFF Custom Rods had a TON of Batson product inventory for sale.... I demoed the Dream Reamer & Ultimate Reamers as a part of the ThreadCentral Learning Center and Batson was one of the sponsors of that - including donating a Alps wrapper along with other product to raffle as prizes. I had colored Alps guides for sale, and Just for Fishi

Kevin - congrats on winning the wrapper - big score for Sat night.... I walked away with a great deal - not as good as that, but still great - on a Flexcoat 4-rod dryer in the waning moments of the show during breakdown..... when some show profits meet not then not wanting to ship it back, good things happen :)

Third Mike here :)
- Tension rod mechanism to allow backing up
- magnetic spool tension
- adapter for Maderia 1000 yd spools
- at least 4 spool capability
Al Engling’s RailWrapper pretty much has it solved - perhaps license it from him or whomever currently owns the design (I know HFF is now selling it)

Definitely some better views of the rods on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok on the respective builder's pages - the top 10 can't be posted in detail until judging is complete I believe... Tom usually includes some good pics of some of the rods in the magazine as well. But nothing beats being there in person for a up and personal view

Oh - one other point. It was AMAZING to see the kids at the show getting involved in Rod Building - I mean the 8, 10, 12 year olds as well as a few older. Seeing them sitting at Mary & Wes Christie's booth wrapping diamond wraps and working the crowd was great- Billy Vivona being a part of as well as David Dysart teaching weaving to the kids (and the big kids) . Kudos to the parents for br

Great show and a great mix of all things - info, education, hand on learning, Product, new stuff. Great buzz and vibe at the show with a strong crowd all day Sat and much of Sunday. Most folks have no clue to the amount of work and energy that goes in behind the scenes for months and months to pull off a show like this. Thanks Tom for your efforts for creating such a venue and gathering opportu

Just got back from an incredible weekend at ICRBE exhibiting, participating and learning with fellow rod builders.
The crowd was great all weekend and there was a buzz on the floor the whole time.
If you didn’t make it you missed an incredible learning opportunity between the general seminars and the new Learning Center. The general seminars were great as always and the. The Learning Ce

If you have a powder wrapper just spin the blank at good speed when applying finish. You’ll get a nice clean edge without tape and it’s mess. I spin the blank and apply the finish over the length. Then come back and make long, light lengthwise strokes to help further smooth your application. Then place it in the dryer and let it cure

I like the look of a split grip and it creates another area to add decorative touch to the rod with a wrap or other. For some rods a full handle may provide better balance and if it’s going in a rod holder it may be a more practical option.

A couple of references say 1986. One (in the “simplified” article) says “shiny pennys minted after 2000)
The shield penny which is apparently 25% heavier was introduced in 2010….

And yes - I can get a scale and it appears that’s what will need to be done given the variety of pennys in circulation. Was highlighting this as the literature out there has some ambiguity on what “standard” to use when the whole point was to make it easy (ie not need a scale) to get the measurements…. And the fact that data collected by others may not be comparable - perhaps “close enough” but

So I was doing some CCS measurements recently for the first time and had to get together a bunch of pennys. Seemed to be some conflicting info in the CCS website/articles on after what year to use - saw 2000, I think 1989 and I 1983 I think it was. Anyway, I looked up at the time when copper pennys changed and went with 1983 as that’s what I found in when they changed the makeup.
Well for so

I've built on the Weapon for a customer that is big into throwing big swimbaits. Very nice blank. It did have a "unsanded" finish so small spirals which I thought might make wrapping a challenge but no issues with size A thread.
If you have questions on the blank you can give Ryan White at Hatteras Jack a call...

If you’re going to get into the world of decorative wraps I’d recommend Billy Vivona’s book “Decorative Wraps” - covers the fundamentals and foundations and info / patterns for more complex wraps.
A chevron is the most basic - just crossing of threads on one direction down the blank. What wi make this a bit more complex is the need to space it so it “closes” - where he threads you’re wrapping
