Terry - I had decided I was going to get into Rod Building a couple years ago and ICRBE was my 1st real "entry" into the world.... it was a great opportunity to put hands on blanks, get some deals on components but more importantly to get exposed to a lot of areas of the craft. I spend a lot of time in the NERBS booth with the sessions that they held - and also in many of the genera

I joked with the operations manager at Mudhole when there for a NERBS event last year if I could get a credit if I brought back a bunch of the bags for them to reuse. There is a method to the madness for the bags and if you saw the operation you’d understand why they do the way they do…. Otherwise you’d likely have missing parts in your order every time…. And the cost of those bags are fracti

Michael is spot on about making sure you fill the tunnels with CO. Very likely your finish is coming through the tunnel backside and turning the thread transparent from underneath as the CP perhaps did not fully soak through the thread

278. Re: Mudhole Website
Tom - I’m also having issues - pages time out - seems to happen when I’m logged into my wholesale account with 20+ items in my cart. They are aware of the issue but seems to be a mix of something on the websites side and the browser client side. My issues are happening with both Safari and Chrome on the Mac, and in Safari on the iPhone. I have found clearing the website data from the browser ca

Let me go grab a Arduino microcontroller, stepper motor controller, some stepper motors and write up a control program - then I can have it automatically turn my rods 180 degrees on a timed interval - or if 60 degrees is the magic number we can do that - or random rotation direction & distance.....

283. FET on repairs?
I know - I know - contact the IRS for the definitiave answer... but....
Is FET due to be collected on repairs - i.e. guide / tip-top replacements? In theory exise tax was collected on the original purchase - and its been collected on the materials I've purchase for the repairs.... is it due again on the total of labor+parts, labor only, not at all?

285. Re: Blank for $50
The Rainshadow REVS72M is probably outside your $50 budget but a great blank as mentioned above - though GetBit has a Thanksgiving sale at the moment with 20% off that gets it close - close enough I’d spring for the extra…

What is the best way to go about trying to identify a blank to replicate an existing rod?
Can of course static load the existing did but with guides already on it will react different than with a bare blank of course.
Other than building up multiple blanks for comparison, any tried and true techniques?

I’ve not seen them published though if you call them direct I bet you’d get the specific info needed
Also, they have build sheets for all their blanks which mat be helpful if the real seat or trim
Ring or such falls close enough to what you need…

Build my first cork (well, “burl”) grips recently and enjoyed the process.
I’ve used “prefab” cork grips up to now. The Batson super grade grips have been very nice quality…

I use the SprayMax 2K clear when painting rods (I’ll typically use a rattle car automotive lacquer and let the paint cure a week before the clear). Works well and any orange peel in the clear finish can be removed with wet sanding & polishing of the blank if desired.
The main drawback is the 48 hour shelf life of the can once you’ve activated it. At $15-$25 a can (depending if your buy i

Have used the FRS several times - admittedly as a spinning seat but no reason I see you could not use it for a casting seat. Solid quality product

Tom - that kind of oversimplifies it a bit I feel. Having the right spacing to start is much more important in a closed wrap in my opinion - yes, threads can be pushed around - to some degree - but with an open wrap you can get away with a lot more “error” than with a closed wrap and pushing threads all over the place to close it is not fun
As to learning resources…. Billy V’s Decorative W

Does anyone have experience using stabilized spalted maple for a grip? Have customer that thinks he wants it for a catfish rod - so a 10-12” grip with a 6-7” foregrip.
Wondering about weight (though it would be in a blank with a butt likely around 3-4” give or take, so not but much of it left… which makes me worry about drilling / reaming such a length.
I’ve seen it used (I think) as ac

Bill spoke to this based on a question asked in today’s BlankTalk. He indicated that given these are very sensitive blanks, the techniques fished with them tend to be done with shorter blanks. He didn’t rule out a 7-10 (they’ve moved the 8’ to 7-10 due to shipping cost issues). Let them hear your applications and demand…. I’m sure it’s all a matter of business case of how much quantity of tha
