I have 10 year old, and a twelve year boys that I'm trying to teach how to fly dish. I'm in the Denver area, and am myself not able to walk great distances. I am currently still building back strength. That being the case, can anyone recommend a place where the boys will have a good chance at catching fish? We don't have a boat, and so a stream would be better. I'm frm Michigan's Eastern U.P

Mudhole .com has customizable rod decals that look great, and are easy to apply to the rod. After applying, I like to coat them with a good epoxy. I now use the Gen 4 epoxy as it is very self leveling, and bubble free. Be aware though, it takes about 8 hours to set up enough that it no longer needs to be turned.

I completed my build last night. I'd made some minor winding mistakes that I was able to correct. I used Snake brand guides and stripper, Piscofin 3 weight floating line, Rio trout leader, and SA Tippet. I purchased a cokr handle kit instead of buying the reel seat and handle sesperately. I took it out on the grass today for a test drive. Now I own a Shakespear 5 weight, a Winston BX3 7

Ice rods cast well when set up with a good guide train, and are even is good for catching small mouths. They are strong enough for pike, but you woud have to matxh the blank and reall seat for a suitable reel and line weight. That tine, strong blank is great fun when hooking into a big rainbow, or bass.

306. fishing shoes
i know this is a rod building forum. However, I know that everyone here is an avid fisher person. So I hope htis question will work on this forum. i am looking at purchasing footwear for fishing. I will be only wading easy water, no rapids, or chest deep water as I did in my youth. I will be mostly fishing from stream, or lake banks, or from docks, or piers. I am considering water shoes ver

307. Re: Rod Paint
Phil, that clears up a concern that I had. Someone else told me those marks showed where the spine was. When I tested each section, the marks did not line up with the spine. Now I know why. I found it hard to believe that a rod company with the reputation of CTS could get it so wrong. They didn't. All is good. Thanks.

Here are a few links.
You can also get the hardware, from grips to guides, glue, and whatever else you need for the build from all of these sites.

Tow years back, I started building rods. My first rods were ice fishing rods. I learned how to find the spines, and wrap guides. Strong, fiberglass rod blanks are inexpensive, in the extreme. However, after getting premium cork handles, premium guides, and tip top, wrap finish, thread, etc. It's still gonna cost you about $60.00 USD. Why am I telling you this? I used Fuji KL Concept guides

I was able to move the guide about a sixteenth of an inch and re-wrap. The thread covered the visual blemish. I checked the spine on all four sections to just make sue everything lined up properly/ I just have two more guides to wrap, and the hook keeper. This thing is almost done. I can hardly wait to cast it. Thanks everyone, for your replies. I like this board.

313. Rod Paint
I have a new CTS Quartz CristalGlass blank. with a gorgeous lime-green finish. In removing some thread wraps due to an imperfection, I accidentally removed a little paint. Can anyone recomend a paint, or ink that will adhere to this very smooth rod blank. I want to make this little piece of the blank beautiful again. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a big fan of Winston fly rods.. They are pricey though. The Winston alpha series rods will get your flies out there, and have enough power to bring in anything you cat
I'm also a big fan of CTS rods. They are strong, light, and available in any configuration you want. CTS Quarts CrystalGlass are exceptionally strogg.and can be purchased with reasonably fast action.
My best advice ec

315. Re: Reel Suggestion
The first spin cast reel I ever used was the Mitchel 300, purchased in the early 1970's. It was bulletproof, and never failed me. After 15 years of fishing with it for brookies, pike, perch, and whatever else was biting, I caught and landed a King salmon with that reel. If it will haul in a King Salmon, for its size, that was one sturdy reel. There are more expensive reels on the market, but

It is my opinion that action does make a difference. The power of the rod will determine the weight of the line used. The action will determine how long it takes to load the rod completely on the back cast, and the speed at which the line is sent forward. This will affect the loop size, and require adjustments in casting technique. Weight forward lines will take longer on the back cast to sta

Using guides that really hug the blank, and a few more of them will decrease the tongue placed on the blank perpendicular to he blank. This will decrease the bending force a bit, in effect making the finished rod stiffer. Also, and I don't even know if this is possible, but from an engineering point of view, running a flexible nylon threads lengthwise along the (spine, not belly) top, from tip

318. Re: Guide Spacing
I just want to chime in and say thanks to everyone. I followed your advise, learned how to do the two-line static test, and what to look for. My guides are spaced a bit differently than what was recommended in the guide placement charts, and load the blank more uniformly.
As an addition, CTS places tiny white marks on their blanks to show where the spine is located. I checked the spine usi

I am disappointed with Threadmaster one. I used in on my first rod build, a Winston 7 weight B3X. It went on well, and was easy to apply. It didnt change the thread wrap color at all, using silk thread. I had no issues with bubbles, or how clear ir was. However, I tried to use it as a protective coating for some decals, and found that it didn't want to laminate well to the rod blank. I re

320. Guide Spacing
I just received my New 3 weight, 7"6" Quartz Crystal Glass rod blank today, and am looking forward to buiolding this rod. I have looked up several online charts, and they all differ a bit. Does anyone have experince with this rod build, and if so, is there a recommended rod guide spacing chart?
Thanks in advance.
