And sorry for the double post. I didn't realize that it went through the first time. :-)

Sorry for this question, but I have been fly fishing since I was thirteen years old, since fly line designations were made with three letters before they began the numbering system. Can anyone explain to me what ERN is about, or guide me to where I can read about this?

Sorry for my ignorance. I have been fly fishing since I was thirteen years old, going back to when fly lines were designated by three letters instead of numbered weight lines. Can anyone explain to me or guide me to information on what ERN is?

155. Cork or EVA?
I am about to try to put together an NFC 765-1 X-ray NEO blank, and I originally intended to use EVA grips which I have already purchased. But after purchasing Fuji K series reduction and running guides for the blank, I thought I might as well go with what I would call first class, and go with cork grips. The problem is, the butt end of the blank is 15mm (0.6 inches) wide. Mudhole has rear gr

156. Re: NFC SJ736
Thanks Russ. To be honest with you, I was very happy with the SJ703 (which I actually haven't finished completely yet) until I got enough feedback about how wimpy it might be for average redfishing. It's probably more mind over matter than reality. So I thought I'd look for a little bump up just as you suggested. The specs on the SJ732 don't look promising on paper, although you have suggeste

Thanks Russ. I just looked at the specs for the MB736-1. Are you familiar at all with this blank? Might this be a decent redfish blank?

Thank you all for your replies. The way I look at it, you saved me a huge headache and disappointment as I was ready to order the SJ736s. A little heavier over the SJ703 would have been fine, but the way you guys describe it, it is likely not for me.

159. NFC SJ736
Hey Guys,
I got a comment in the past about the NFC SJ736 blank. At the time I was putting together an SJ703 for inshore salt water, and everyone who chimed in thought that that blank was a little light for that use. Someone suggested the SJ736 was likely a better choice. I pretty much fish lures in weights of 1/4 to perhaps 3/4, so I'm not looking for a tuna rod, but I just want enoug

I viewed a video a short while ago by Flex Coat demonstrating a locking technique for wrapping micro guides in order to help minimize the possibility of having the guide yanked free should one get the line wrapped around the guide for whatever reason, for example while fighting a fish. Is this...or should this be standard technique for these small guides, especially for saltwater application? I

Aaron....what does "coating" mean? Epoxy?
Forum: rodboard 3 years ago
Ernie Blum
I have historically used either color preserver or rod varnish on my wraps even if using an NCP type thread in order to essentially fill in the air gaps within the thread and help seal it. In my mind at least, this helps to minimize air bubbles escaping when applying the epoxy. Is this a reasonable practice or an unnecessary waste of time?

I just saw something interesting by accident regarding the application of decals. The gentleman doing the video mentioned that the blank he was about to apply the decal to was an NFC blank. He mentioned the fact that these blanks are ribbed, and that you cannot successfully apply decals to these blanks "as is" (my words) because of this. He suggested that one needs to apply a thin co

165. Tapering guide feet
Sorry if this sounds like a trivial question, but I always find contouring the guide feet in general to be a pain in the neck. On most small guides, I have always used sand paper for the most part...sand paper in one hand and guide in the other. This was usually for fly rod guides. It was still a pain in the neck, but at least the guides had some length to them so you could have some meat to h

I have been fly fishing and fly casting for over fifty years, and I am wondering what watching someone cast with a fly rod would accomplish, other than get an idea of whether or not they seem to know what they are doing. A

Thank you guys for the tips.
Russ....I just went back and measured the tips of both those blanks, and both are 2mm dead on. I guess that's why one should measure them, instead of relying on what they tell you! To be honest with you, the blanks are essentially unmarked. What I asked for and what they sent me could be totally different animals. By the way, does NFC make descriptive de

I am going to order the guides for my 7' NFC 703, and am going to use the 20H-10h-5.5M reduction train. I am also going to order the parts for an NFC MB 765 7'6" blank that is a tad stiffer. Although I will usually be in the 12-15 pound braid range, if i DID go as high as 20#, could I still use the 20-10-5.5 scheme? My reels vary from 2500s to 4000s. I will be using #5 runners on the 703

OK. I understand the KR Concept a lot better than I did when I first heard of its existence on this rod board weeks ago. I am now ready to try to pick some guides. NFC SJ703...7ft blank. I use a Penn 450SS more than any other reel, but I've got many reels still in boxes that I may break out one day, the smaller ones being 2500s. After studying this board a little, it looks like I have two reasona

Great! Thank you both for your answers.
This is a little off topic, but the butt of the blank I'm using is about 11mm wide. A conventional Fuji reel seat in a #16 is 15 or 16mm ID I believe, so no problem fitting over the blank. I was looking at a couple of rods that I had purchased in the past, one a Hurrican Redbone, and the other a TFO. The TFO is 71/2 feet line rated 6-12, for 1/4

172. Length of rear grip?
After careful thought, I have decided to abort building the next rod with the Fuji VSS reel seat/cork handle combination. Even the people who sell the product think it's a pain in the neck, especially the full grip. In the end, I don't need fancy, I just want functional.
I am building a 7 foot NFC SJ 703. The cork grip I now want to put on the rod comes in either an 8 inch length or a

OK...just got home from work.
I would think that anyone who has put this reel seat / cork handle on a blank before knows what I am talking about. If it were a split grip, you would first determine where you would want to put the fore grip....the reel seat and the corresponding cork. Assuming you had marked the spot for this on the blank, you would then set out to ream the cork so that it wou

I am assuming that the foam arbors that you refer to are commonly available. Yes?
Forum: rodboard 3 years ago

I was all excited to finally start assembling the handle of my NFC 703. I am using a full handle as opposed to a split grip. I was assuming that the procedure was straight forward....send the reamed cork handle to its final position at the bottom of the blank after having marked where the barrel of the reel seat will span and rolling two or three tape arbors in strategic places for it to slip o

Always favorite subjects of mine. I was enrolled in a Master's Degree program in immunology at NYU in the late seventies.
