Here is an English version of the Fuji KR concept video showing slow motion video of line coming off both spinning and casting reels. Norm

You want a good compromise between packability vs functionality. Going too small will hurt functionally, too large will affect packability. I think a size 12M stripper is a good compromise. Norm

Yep, once I used it I never looked back. The KR concept is extremely versatile and really enhances the performance of almost any rod. Turns a low end blank into a high end rod.. Norm

Factory rod manufacturers face a dilemma in that they have no control over the size and type of reels and lines the customer will use with their rods. Thus, they are forced to use a guide train that performs well, but probably not optimally, with most reels and lines. The ability to optimize a guide train to the reel and line being used is just another thing that makes a custom rod custom. In my

In the past, I had identical M spinning rods set up with cone of flight, NGC guides Microwave guides, and KR guides. So someone wanting to test cast each could, and then choose the guide train they liked. KR was the predominant choice followed, not so closely, by Microwave and NGC. Distances were similar, with a slight edge going to the KRs. However, the different guide trains gave each rod a

12M, 6M, and 4M will work, I have tried it before. Have not tried 10, 6, 4. So not sure about that set up. The Minima guides are cheap enough to allow for some experimenting. Norm

I bought a live center with tail stock for my Renzetti rod lathe a couple of years ago. However it seems that Renzetti stopped selling Rod lathe accessories. Don’t know when that happened, but it’s disappointing. Bummer! Norm

Your threaded barrel on the reel seat is too long. Back the hidden thread hood all the way off, and trim the threaded barrel of the the reel seat back about 1/4” or so. Glue the cork rings together again and you should be good to go. What happens is if the threaded section of the reel seat protrudes beyond the hidden thread hood when tightened down, and the reel seat pushes against the cork at th

Or use a turn or two of dry wall tape to snug it up. The mesh of the dry wall tapes gives great adherence and light weight. Norm

A few years back I made a couple of rods for a tournament fisherman who was sponsored ny Denali rods. I put my hook keeper on those rods. He liked them so much he had me put them on every rod he owned. A year or so later I saw that Denali Rods were using a hook keeper very similar to my design. Small world. Norm

I’m still waiting on a blank I ordered in December. Emails with no reply’s, telephone calls with no answers. NFC’s customer service is the worst I’ve ever seen. Norm

Yes, it’s the distance off the blank not the total height of the guide. Norm

I like to top coat with Permagloss. Very easy to do,and gives a very hard, and durable clear gloss finish that will not yellow. This is how it done courtesy of Tom Kirkman. If you don’t have a lathe then use a cordless drill. Slide the grip over some sort of mandrel, Chuck into the drill and turn while applying the Permagloss with a foam brush. You can apply a second coat, if you want, aft

I bought a pump set last year to try, but didn’t fit the threads on my Threadmaster bottles so I have not used them. Never had any problems with syringes. Norm

Yes it can be done. I have down it a number of times on old rods were the wrap and label finish was dull and scratched. Scuffed using a scotch brite pad, wiped clean, and they applied. Brings the luster back. Not sure how it would work on a newly applied epoxy finish. Norm

That because you surf fish. If you fished for pan fish you would be familiar with 500 sized reels. They are out there if you look for them Norm

I was experimenting a while back with a 6’6” ultra light rod build and just for the heck of it decided I would try a size KL12H stripper, KL8M, and KL5.5M for the reduction train and KB/KT 4 runners. I was really surprized how well the rod casted and performed, but i was using 500 and 1000 reels with very light braid. A KL12H is almost as high as an LV20, which I have used for a stripper on UL r

Could also look at the Phenix Elixer UL Blanks. I find fly rod blanks made into spin rods just feel a little too sloppy for me, but that just me. Some like that soft sloppy feel, I don’t. Norm

You might be able to scrape the paint from the very tip of the blank and get the tiptop to fit. Sometimes that is all that is needed. Norm
