Mark, from what I have found it seems that the Missilite rods were made by the National Research Manfacturing Co prior to being sold to Abu Garcia in 1960. So your rod was probably made in the late 1950 s. Here is a little history I found interesting. Norm

Mark, they were used on spinning, casting, and fly rods. Even on boat rods, and surf rods. The largest size of the guides was about 2.5” ( over 60mm) in diameter down to a small size of at least 1/4” (about 6 mm) Their diameters were measured in inches vs millimeters, and were made of Monel stainless wire in two different gauges, light and heavy. Back in the day Orvis used them on some of their

The guides look similar to the old Aetna Foulproof guides, but not quite. I don’t think Aetna made guides in the 40s or 50s. So if these are Aetna guides and if original to the rod, then the blank was not made in the 40s or 50s, but I may be wrong. The Aetna Foulproof are hard to find. I used to have a bunch of them but gave them away a couple of yrs ago to someone in Michigan who used them on sa

Spinning rod or casting rod? What power? What reel and what type of line? I’m not a big fan of recoil guides for either spinning or casting, much prefer KR guides. Yes you can do a KR concept without using Fuji K guides, but those guides need to have similar specifications in order to get good results. Norm

Most of epoxies used for gluing things together are very tolerant to differences in mixing ratios. A Glob of each that look about same size is close enough. If you want to be a little more accurate use measuring spoons. Finishing epoxies are quite different and require much more accurate measuring. Norm

Ernie, intrinsic power is basically the amount of weight it takes to bend a rod 1/3 its total length. So it a means to determine the relative power of a given rod, and enables one to compare that rods with other rods. It is much more meaningful that relying on the manufacturers power designations of L, M, MH, H, etc. However, very few manufacturers give IP numbers when describing their blanks, th

I did a CCS Intrisic power (IP) calculation on a SCVS66MF and the IP=425 gm, for an Eternity ETES68M the IP=455 gm, and for an MHX EPS 81MXF IP= 437gm. So all three were surprising close in their power ratings, Eventhough the Eternity and the Elite Pro series blanks were a little longer I would think that their respective 6’6” versions would be similar in power. For example, a SCVS70MF has an IP

The NFC blanks are nice but not that nice. I have heard and really think they are having some financial problems, maybe explaining their terrible customer service, and terrible may be a little on the kind side. A number of the blanks I have received from them appeared to be seconds, so I have not been impressed with their quality. One rod I built for a friend broke the first day he used it and

Here is what I posted on another thread a short time ago concerning a 4.5 UL rod. “The difference between the Fuji KB guides and the KT guides is that the KBs have a longer and wider foot but still have the same ring size and height. The KB guides are meant to be used in the mid section (or belly) of the rod to better resist pullout forces that occur in this section of the rod when fully loade

For a carbon fiber grip get the ones that don’t have a tenon for both a fear and fore grip. With the Winn Grips just cut the tenon off so the reel sits fits flush. No problem doing this. Reel seat size is a personal choice. Some like small some like large. A size 17 reel seat is just fine for most fishing situations and are a good match with both the CFX carbon fiber fore and rear grips, and the

Scott, I just received an email from a friend of mine from Hawaii, who is really into competive distance casting, and thus really knows what he is talking about. Here is what he sent me: “I noticed a request for information about the availability of 14 ft blanks. Talon does build a variety of these blanks and they are used in Hawaii for Ulua. They fall into two categories. Ulua and Menpach

The threaded barrel of the Minima reel seat will need to be shimmed. I usually use a piece of a 16 mm polyurethane foam arbor and epoxy it in place in the tube. When set the arbor can be easily reamed to fit the blank. With the split reel seat you will need a winding check for at least one end of the threaded barrel, if you go with no foregrip you will need two winding checks. There a number of w

I find your comments to the poster insulting and demeaning, He asked a question if anyone has texperience with making rods using different varieties of bamboo. There are other types of bamboo that make perfectly acceptable rods that are fun to fish with, even if they are not the

Sure, if you want to you can add some more backing to fill the spool completely, but not required. The slower action will make it a little easier for you to cast with a nice relaxed casting motion. The slower action is more forgiving of casting technique. A 5 wgt will cast most flies used for trout or panfish, it will not do well with large bulky, and/or heavy flies. You should have fun with it
