I have had problems with the metallic thread fading. The strange thing is it only happened with the color blue. I built 3 rods with the same color and after a season of fishing they all turned silver. Luckily I used it for trim bands. MH

Use 2 coats and light heat to remove bubbles. Dont sand your wraps like someone suggested above. Dust is a big problem so avoid creating any and make sure the rod and tools are clean. Good luck. MH

398. Re wrapping rod
I just removed guides from a blank to replace with different guides. What is the best way to clean off remaining residue? All thread is removed but the color preserver isn't coming off with alcohol. Thx MH

G Loomis pro4x is the rod to look up. Might be another one on the market. I'm looking for the article I read. My friend said it was a very easy rod to cast and was able to throw large flys a good distance when compared to his 9'. I'll get back to you when I locate article.

I was talking to a friend about the new 7'6" salt fly rods. He said he cast one and liked how it worked. So I was thinking about buying an 8 or 10 wt. 2 pcs blank and cutting it. Anyone try this? I'm wondering if taking that much off the butt end is going to ruin the action. Any input is appreciated. Happy New Year! MH

403. Re: Why?
My wife signed me up for a rod building class years ago as a gift. Now I'm addicted. I love working with my hands and it's very satisfying to build a rod or tie a fly that catches fish.

I float the bottles in a cup of warm water for 5-10 min before using. Mixes and spreads much better.

I looked at video on the hogy Web site that shows him trolling tubes with a musky rod. Anyone have experience building a rod like that? If so what blank do you recommend? He was also using sinking fly line as his main line. Anyone have experience with that as well? Any input is greatly appreciated. Happy holidays! MH

You can use those tips. I believe I use BFTL tip. You should use a larger loop for saltwater fly lines.

BVK Blanks are great. I use an 8 wt. and a 10wt. for saltwater fishing. I build mine with minima guides and they work great. I use a # 16/ #12/ # 10 to snakes guides on my. 8 wt. And #20/ # 16 / # 12 to single foot guides on my 10 wt. like to keep the running guides as small as possible so the line responds quickly when casting. I use intermediate and sinking lines most of the time so I'm not do

I jig and surf cast in the northeast and I don't see how I could build a rod for both. Jigging I use 6'-7.5' blanks 6-12 Oz. and surf casting I use 9'-11' blanks 1-6oz. . You should build him 2 rods that are specific to his needs. Different grip lengths - guides- etc will make it difficult to meet both needs properly with one rod. Good luck. MH

Roger, I took a look at the drum roller photo you attached. That's a great idea. Looks like it would work well with surf casting and salt fly rods. I will keep the idea in mind when building my cabinet. Thank you, MH

Hello Roger, thank you for your input. I agree any dust is too much dust. This winter I am going to build a long (13') drying cabinet so that the finishing process is contained and easy to clean between rods. A local builder has one that works very well for him. He even put a small heater in it to keep the temp constant. I like your idea with the handkerchief. I will give it a try. Thx, MH

416. polishing new wraps
Does anyone have a way to polish out minor imperfections from a newly coated wrap. Occasionally I'll get a guide that has a particle of dust that landed on it while drying. Would like to get it perfect without putting another coat on it. Thx

X2 on bill's reply. The Pac Bay Minima Guides work great as stripping guides. I transition from them to snakes for saltwater use on 7- 9 weight rods. Single foots on 10 weight and above. Good Luck. MH

Lots of great responses. I only saltwater fly so I can respond to that part of your question. I love the TFO BVK blanks I cast sinking and intermediate lines without a problem and floating lines long distance. Great blank for a great price. Another blank to think about is ATC matrix. Great price and again have worked very well for me. I've landed large bluefish and stripers on both blanks. That's
