331. Re: 10' surf rod
Thanks Thomas, are you talking about the surf rocket series rods? If so I agree. Those are great blanks. I've built on a few of them. Too bad they're sold out. I did take advantage of their recent sale on surf rods and bought a half dozen blanks. Thanks, MH

Michael, I misunderstood your idea. I agree with the others it's not going to work. Tom has a cool idea that sounds like it works. I'm thinking you could do a wrap to match your guide wraps and put a few coats over it. Let the line rub on that. Good luck, MH

I agree with Steve and Roger. Use a low casting guide. Spiral wrapped rods work great but I have found that using two or more guides to transition to 180 degrees works better. Best, MH

That's up to the client. Does he have a rod that he uses now? Does one of his friend have a surf rod he likes? If yes then find out the length of that. I build surf rods for the northeast and the rods I use have different lengths for each application. I go as short as 15" up to 24". Shorter ones for me are my 9'-10' lighter lure rods. Mainly plastics and light tins. The longer grips are

Lol... I saw that. I'm hoping someone has built a rod for that application and has some input. I don't do any surf casting with bait. I use plugs, plastics, tins. Thanks for the response. MH

339. 10' surf rod
A friend asked me to build him a 10' surf casting rod for throwing bait with 3-6 oz sinkers. He wants to use a spinning reel as well. I'm looking for blanks now. Need some blank ideas. Thanks MH

No not that blank but you can use the existing guides on the rod you use to figure out how much to cut. Start at the first tip guide and hang 10-12oz off it then move to the next one down and do the same. You can tape guides between the mounted guides to figure out the sweet spot. If you do this cut little by little always check to make sure a tip top fits properly on the sweet spot. I hope this

I agree with Don. A scotch pad does the trick. Stay away from solvents and etching products. Good luck MH

Brian, Angler's Workshop might have it in stock. The minima guides are pretty inexpensive so buy the recommended number and size for the blank then add a few running guides to the order. Set up the guides and reel seat then mount the reel and test the layout. Move guides and add guides until you get a nice curve in the line. I can measure the set up I use but remember I cut my blank down by 6&quo

I use that blank in long Island for stripers, blues, false albies, etc. I wrapped minima single foot guides on it and I cast it with a Penn slammer 360. Start with recommended guide distances and move around to adjust for reel spool size. I used a size 30 guide as the stripper guide and a total of 9 guides plus a tip top. Also I cut 6" off the butt. I think you will be happy with that blank.

347. Re: Rod Guide fix
Replace it. You want the customer to trust your workmanship. If you do a quick fix and it fails you might lose his future business and the people he explains guide repair experience to. Good luck MH

Adam, I still think it's a bad idea to use snakes but I have an idea you can try. Use recoil casting guides for the transition and use large size heavy duty snakes for the guides placed on the bottom (180 degrees). Not sure how it will work, but it's another way to do it. Good luck MH

Adam, I agree with herb. Not a good idea to use snakes of any brand for that application. Recoil casting guides will work and pac bay minima guides are another good option. MH

Great light weight guide. I use on saltwater fly, spinning, and bottom rods. The only issue I had was with a tip top etching from reeling in large blue fish, but that's an easy fix. Good luck. MH

That's quite a trick Roger. Great way to remove toe jams and sight a rod. Have fun. MH

X2 roger. I do the same thing. Works great. Mount a pole holder in your shop and place rod in it. Use a weight on a line or tie it off then step back and look at your guide placement. Good luck. MH

Roger and Tom make good points. Most important is to build the rod so it's comfortable to cast, reel, and fight fish. Last thing you want to do is add unnecessary weight. Good luck MH

Justin, I was hoping Capt neil Faulkner was going to chime in on the post. I would contact him to get his expert opinion. He has many years of experience under his belt and the build you are doing is one of his specialties. I would look him up. Good luck. MH

I don't use them with crankbaits but I use bushido blanks for saltwater. Catching striped bass, bluefish, etc. I highly recommend using them. Good luck. MH
