X2 on Lynn's response. I stopped using the 3's due to inconsistencies. Some guides had sharp edges. The 4's work great for me. All my builds are for saltwater and I haven't had any issues. The new bronze colored ones are pretty cool. Planning on using them on one of my next builds. MH

Great guides. I use on saltwater rods and I have no complaints. If you do a topic search you will find many posts about these guides. MH

Start with spinning rod guide spacing and as Michael said add another guide between the first and second guide. 0-90-180 works fine. I prefer 0-60-120-180 spiral with at least three guides in the 180 position. Make sure you mount your reel and run line through your guide set up with the tip top mounted. Add some weight to the line and view the line path to make sure it has a smooth transition. Ma

I use for saltwater water casting and bottom fishing rods. I prefer the 0 - 60 - 120 - 180 degree set up. I turn to guides towards the handle side of reel so the rod rests on the handle and not on the guides when laying on deck. Good luck, mh

They look great. Unfortunately it looks like they're no longer for sale on their site. I'm going to search around the Internet for another seller. Thx MH

Gudebrod is out of business but some suppliers might have left over product in stock. Look at sulky threads as well. They make some color twist and blended threads. Good luck. MH

Rick, When will Angler's Workshop have the guides in stock and what is the name of them? Thx MH

The ones used on TFO rods aren't durable. A friend has several rods he uses for clients on his charters. He is essential them in saltwater and the rings break and the guide feet are weak. I like the minima guides but I will check out the sea guides. I'll buy a set if they're the same style as the minima and build myself a test rod. Have a Happy New Year! MH

Rick, who else manufactures that style guide? I have a rod I bought a while back with similar guides made by fuji. I haven't seen those fuji guides offered by anyone. Thx, MH

Tom is correct. Other companies make very similar guides that don't hold up. The only time I had an issue with grooving is with the tip tops. That's because I caught over a dozen 8-10# bluefish in a blitz. The tip grooved so I swapped the tip out and 2 years later I use the same rod with the same guides. They're holding up perfect. I just built several rods for clients and all have minima 4 guide

Work great. I use them on my salt bottom fishing rods, fly rods, spinning rods and light surf rods. The guides are light and tough.

$0.02 from the east coast. Seeker Hercules gts70l or heavier. I do like the rainshadow / Batson blanks as well. Merry Christmas, MH

Hey Randy, I would go with a 20 stripper and 10's the rest of the way. The 10's will pass a knot and the occasional swivel much easier. I prefer a 0-10, 60,120, 170-180 spiral when I build them. I'm in the process of finishing 5 spiral rods for customers to give for Christmas. Good luck. MH

X2 chris's response. You might want to apply a coat of CP over the white thread. Do a test before building rod. Good luck. MH

I know where CP on metallic thread is helpful. I recently used sulky prism white thread for trim bands on a colored blank and the color came through. It's not a problem, but CP would've kept that from happening. Happy Holidays!

No need for CP. I use perma gloss on metallic thread. It gives it a bright shine and seals the thread. Apply two coats and make sure it's dry before reapplying. Usually 1-2 hours is good. Make sure to close cap tight and if possible store in the refrigerator. It will last longer. Good luck, MH

I don't know where else to get one, but I've built a few of those for my friends kids. They like to bottom fish for sea bass, fluke, weakfish. I bought the 7' and cut the tip back about 6-8" and the butt end a couple inches to make a 6' - 6'2" spiral wrapped bottom rod. They work great for the kids.

Good point Phil. With that said I have found the matrix rods cast best for me when I match the blank weight with intermediate lines and over line by one weight with floating lines. It's worth trying different combinations. MH

Go with it. They work great. My customers think they look more expensive then they really are. I use black more than chrome but that's my preference. Good luck, MH

Hey Bill, great post. I have a client asking me to build same type of rods for tuna popping. Lots of useful info since i haven't tried that type of fishing. I do agree the double foot ti K guides are the way to go. I use them on heavy surf rods and they hold up. Tight Lines, MH

The larger tip ring won't look goofy. If you reel the swivel or a knot through the tip top it won't lock up and damage it. I use a 10 or larger on bottom rods and surf rods and it doesn't look bad. Good luck, MH

I fish salt and don't use swivels. I tie double uni knots for line to leader. I'm using 20-40# braid and 25-40# fluorocarbon. I also use the Albright knot for the same line choices. I have found doing a simple overhand knot close to the lure/sinker allows me to break off when I hook rocks or structure and saves most of my leader. Just another option. Good luck, MH
