Good idea rod. Its a surf leash. Look for a competition or ultra light one of you want to try it. Very durable. can he expensive but you get 6'+ to work with. Also look on diving website for a dry suit rubber conditioner. It can help extend the life of the ring. Best, MH

Hey Roger, which brand of finish do you use for your rods? Thx MH

I agree with above. Too much finish. Apply more than one coat and apply thin coats. Press the first coat into the wraps to fill gaps and let dry. Then apply one or more additional coats to build it. Also use heat to work out air bubbles. I use a minimum of two coats and up to five coats on rods. Best MH

Capt. Neil, my experience with fuji is much different than the post above me. I use a power wrapper and haven't had the problems Justin is experiencing. I've used the fuji copper metallic thread on a few rods. Works great and no fading issues but a bit pricey. I also like the fish hawk silver metallic thread. It's strong and doesn't get those little knots and rough texture. Like other builders I

I agree with Bill. You can also use perma gloss before coating.

I have cut the salt water fore grip and I used Toms method. A sharp razor easily cuts through it. Good luck. MH

I would start by using the search option on top of main page. It's loaded with information. Type in what you are building and set to search all words. Then open the search to all dates. It's a good starting point. MH

Never used the Thai blank but I've read it's very strong and will work that application. I building a rod for that purpose and used a rainshadow sws70mh 15-30# 1-4oz. Weighs in at 4.5 oz. You can cut it down to the length you want. I used the same blank to build a Mahi sight fishing rod. Hope that helps. Best, MH

I agree with tom and chads advise, but I left out an important fact. I havent used the pac bay tube. I use the Batson tube and the flock tube mud hole sells. Not sure if there's much difference. Anyway, I leave extra on mine so I can slide reel seat over it to get a clean finish and I also use butt cord under the shrink tube to do diamond patterns, spirals and coils on my bottom fishing and surf

I pull the tube towards the tip of rod with a 1/4-1/2" extra. Then shrink it working towards the butt. When I get close to end I make a cut about 1/4-1/2" past end and finish shrinking. Hope this helps. Best, MH

Lol... it's a jig. Great name right? the striped bass, bluefish, false albacore love them, but can be used for other species. Its a cross between a diamond jig and a cast master. Thanks for input. He's catching Mahi between 8-20# with the occasional larger one. Best, MH

Hey Bob, thank you. I appreciate your input. He does a lot of sight casting to buoys and floating debris. What guides do you use? Best, MH

A friend asked me to build him a spinning rod for throwing deadly dicks and other like lures to Mahi when he's offshore tuna fishing. He wants a spinning rod so my plan is build a seeker Hercules gts70l with titanium double foot K guides. I'm thinking this set up will give him flexibility. He can cast jigs or vertical jig. Looking for input. Am I on the right track or is there better blank/guide

Yea, I thought that was the case. The rod I saw was impressive 12' surf rod. Its called a morethan. I'd hate to spend that kind of dough only to tear it up. Thanks for the input. Best, MH

A friend has a daiwa rod made overseas with the AGS carbon fiber guides. Does anyone know where they can purchased. He's worried about breaking one and not being able to replace. I'd also like to know because they're pretty impressive and would like to build a rod using them. Thanks MH

I use minima guides on some of my spinning rods. The guides hold up great but the tip tops not so good with bluefish. The braid line actually cut into the ring and started to fray the line.
