155. Re: Spinning Rod
Daniel:
On spinning and casting rods, the angler may seldom touch the area between the "fighting butt" and the back fo the reel seat. Therefore, having cork there does not serve a purpose. Many builders therefore don't put grip material there, creating what is called a split grip. To change the colour of the grip, call Mudhole, they may change it out if they have those items in a

Thanks for the offer Forrest. I hope to have some Green and Black headed my way shortly and I will pick up some of the Tiger thread at the show in February. This is going to be a minimal repair if I can get away with it. Sold by my grandfather to the grandfather of a cousin on that side of the family :)

157. Re: Cork Seal
Rodbuilder Supplies is in BC, and carries Cork Seal. Andy is great to work with. Cork Seal will darken the cork and increase the contrast between different types of cork.
If you are looking for Truoil, try Walmarts with a good sports section or your favourite gun store.

159. Thread Help
Folks:
I have had a couple of rods given to me, that the story goes were the first rods that my Grandfather sold when he open his Bait and Tackle shop in Belle River, Ontario. They are Shakespeare Wonderrods. One is in need of repair. A guide needs to be re-wrapped and the ferrule needs to be re-wrapped. To do this I need some Black/Green Classic Twist thread. This does not seem to be in

160. Re: Rod finish
When you are looking at the hardener in the bottle, you are looking through neatly an inch of material. Although the hardener has coloured, in the thicknesses that are used in building a rod, the colour will be unnoticeable unless you are using white thread. Even then it will only be a slight cast.

There are a couple of issues.
The magazines go out as third class mail, so they are not bundled except by general mailing area in the US. Each magazine that is sent to Canada needs a customs form and additional postage which takes time and money, cutting into profit margin.
So the easiest way is to have all of the Canadian subscriptions sent to one address in the US, and then picked u

Chris:
Depending on where you are, if you can get to the US regularly, rent a mail box at a UPS store. Have the magazine sent there.
I live about 10 minutes from a border crossing, but I have a relative re-ship the magazine to me. I did build him a rod though:) The price is right for me :)

Two methods come to mind.
1) Strip all of the exposed paint, mask off what is not to be painted(grips, guides, labels etc) and spray a colour match paint with a top coat.
2) Strip all of the guides, repaint, topcoat with permagloss or lumiseal and rewrap the guides,
Trying to fill the craters will mean over filling and sanding.

175. Re: Repair
What is missing in the picture is the rather large ferrule above the break. I could slip an outside sleeve over the butt part of the break, but would not be able to insert the tip into the sleeve.

What orientation should the split be? Up? down? With the hoop strength compromised, where do you put the weak point?

178. Re: Repair
It is a tip into butt rod. The ferrule at the top of the butt section is larger that the diameter where the repair is needed. Short of stripping and rebuilding the ferrule, an inner sleeve is the only option.

179. Repair
I am in the process of completing a repair to an older 2 piece ultra light rod. The break is about 6" below the ferrule and 2" above the first guide. Due to this being a tip into butt rod, an oversleeve is not an option, so I am going with an inner sleeve. The sleeve is fit and will be glued with rod bond. I plan on filling the gaps between the two pieces with tinted rod bond. I w
