181. Re: Microwave guide
Don't forget that Lance at Swampland Tackle has a larger Micorwave guide that is available if you feel the Guide in the set may be too small.

Build a wooden, octoganal, one like Mark Crouse and a rod sock for a three piece rod. you then get to pick the wood species and finish. Custom :)

183. Re: metallic thread
If you wrap with the metallic in hand, you can twist it so that the core does not appear to separate.

How loose is the seat? Just a minor rocking or a full spin?. If a full spin, can it be moved upd the blank as well? if so, clean as much of the old epoxy as possible and re-glue.

If you look closely on the second image, just above the flair, you can see one of the corss points.

Ok. Get 4 colours of pens.
Take the first colour of pen and put a dot at 0, 14, 28,42 ... on axis 0
Take the same colour pen and put a dot at 3.5, 17.5, 31.5 ... on axis 90
Take that same colour pen and put a dot at 7, 21, 35 .... on axis 180
Take the same colour pen and put a dot at 10.5, 24.5,38.5 ... on axis 270
You will hit all of these points when wrapping the thread up the blank.

This is about as portable as you will get.
All you need is a table edge.

Look at this weave : This is 103 threads by 151 threads. That translates to a graph image that is 103 squares tall by 151 squares wide. at 10 squares per inch, 10.3 inches tall by 15.1 inches wide. This is a very large image :) determine how big the final weave is going to be based on the circumference of the rod and use that to set the scale of the image/graph paper.

If you are going to use a 5 as the tip then why the 6's for the running guides? Blank clearance?

193. Re: Wood Rod Case
Gerald:
What are your questions? Teh nice thing wth the wooden cases is that they can be made in what ever configuration you would like. I attended Mark Crouse's seminars for the last two years and have built a couple of cases. I have elongated an octoganal case for a presentation case and have been contemplating how to build a case for reel on type application.
There are two basic meth

That is what I did. In fact I used different coloured pens to make the dots so that I could track which axis the mark related to.

the minima 3's that I used for the running guides have a 5.2 mm inside diameter. they are more than large enough for a 5wt fly line with loop connectors.

Russell has good information. It is a tough first wrap. I cut one off because it didn't look right. The spacing between repeats being the circumference for a square pattern is right on. Once the first wraps are down, the up wraps will be to the left of the first wrap and the down wraps will be to the right. This covered well in Billy's book, Decorative Wraps, as well as some other tips that

ok. Designate one of the axis as 0. it doesn't matter which one. The one to the left will be axis 1, the one opposite will be axis 2, and the one to the right will be axis 3.
Let's start wrapping.
attach the first thread and sprialling up the rod, hit the first dot on the 0 axis, hit the second dot on axis 1, the third dot on axis 2, the fourth dot on axis 4 and the fifth dot on axis 0.

if you have decided on a 4 cm repeat on the pattern, on 4 axis, you will have marks, each cm up the rod on all four sides. The first pass will cross at the 0 mark on the first axis, 1 cm on the 90 degree axis, 2 cm on the 180 axis, 3 cm on the 270 axis and 4 cm on the 0 axis again..
with an 8 cm gap, the first down thread will cross at 8 cm on the 0 axis, 7 cm on the 90 axis, 6 cm on the 180

Why not make an octagonal wooden case. It can be as large and long as necessary. With rod socks, a definite value add.

A rod is a cone. if the bottom of the cone is level the top is not. When talking level, most are talking level as per the center line of the rod.

Nope. A bubba hookset on a 20# river salmon is not its intended use. The rod is build on a 7.5" 5 piece 4 wt blank. It broke at the tip of the butt and the tip of the 3rd section. Looks like clean edges, no tearing of fibres.

I think I used Minima 3s in size 5 on that rod. I will check when I get home. I just wish the owner hadn't blown that rod up in two places!!

As pointed out the only issue I see, is if the Microwave set will pass the knots for the fly line.

Billy's book has a good explaination and is what I followed.
Decide how many axis you want. Then determine the size of the box. This is based on the circumference of the blank I believe. This will be used to mark the first cross points. This will be marked on all axis. In the case of a 4 axis wrap, there will be marks at 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees around the blank.
Now start pulling th

Chris:
for the BBQ motor, go to your local hardware store and look for a nail set with a square end. Find one that fits into the recess in the BBQ motor. Using double sided tape, slide the nail set into the butt of the rod and turn :)) worked well for me for a number of rods.
