Not on the SKA but have built a few rods of this type. A fast action live bait rod with a soft tip for natural bait presentation is what you are looking for. If you do a search on this site you will se a lot of people recommending the Seeker CLB702, 704, 706 & 708. I've built a few of the CLB704's and they are perfect for this application. When Shakespeare was still building blanks the Ugly S

Still, you are ultimately relying on the bond between thread finish and the blank for your grips when coating the length of your grips. I've peeled finish off blanks before, it's not that hard to do.

I've done this a total of 1 time, so am not an expert in any way, BUT, I'll offer my two cents anyways. I was concerned when doing this that mounting grips over finish could cause problems considering finish is not an adhesive and you are gluing the grips to finish. I've never heard of anyone experiencing this BUT take a look at a recent post on the photo board where thread tension broke the

Be careful using thread diameters listed. They do not consider putting tension on the threads and flattening when wrapping. Billy V's book list Gudebrod A and Madeira at 4 threads per mm which I've found to be right on. I just finished a crosswrap using D Nylon, which should be about the same as size C NCP. I wanted to make sure my design wasn't going to close on me so I assumed that the D wa

I've never been to a factory, but would like to see how they do it. A picture of the wrapping machines at St. Croix is on the Flex Coat site And seeker has a video beginning with how they make a blank through the finished rod. It is about 15 minutes long and obviously they don't get to applying epoxy until the end but it is an interesting video. (Right in the middle of the page "Seeke

Get the Rod MAker on building stand-ups, it opened my eyes on these rods.

I've used a hacksaw on every blank I've ever cut without a problem. I also tape where I'm going to cut or the graphite fibers at the bottom of the cut will peel up the blank. I like the idea of cutting around the entire outer circumfrance rather than stright thru the blank, but I also think it doesn't make much of a difference at the butt end of a blank. As far as painting the blank, I'm glad

I watched many of his videos when I first was getting started. Never met him but wish I could have, seems like a pretty cool guy based on the pic and his nickname "the loaded mullet" posted on the link you posted. RIP

The stand-up article really opened my eyes to aspects of building these types of rods that I would have never thought of some of which applies to rods in all classes. Scott and Bill's articles also opened a new door for thread art that was formerly unique to them.

I just finished a rod for a friend of mine's kid. I used the Mudhole camo blanks and grips, what kid doesn't like camo, right?? They are shorter but you might need to cut it down a bit to get to your 3'. It got expensive when I added the camo grips, reel seat and SIC guides (I know it's a little over the top, but looks real cool. Oh yeah, the kid is not due to be born for another 6 weeks, but he

CAPTAIN!!!! Is that what he makes you guys call him now because I know it has nothing to do with boating, LOL. I'll stop by the store on my way home and see if they have a copy left, I doubt they will though with an article written by the captain himself. Good job Scott and Mudhole.

So it is 12" from the tip?? You said the butt section broke. If it is on the tip end it is a lot more difficult due to flexing. There is an article in the Library section that Ralph O'Quinn wrote on how to repair. It si a great article but if this rod has great sentiment to your customer you may want to refer him to someone else.

Inner sleeve with another blank. Was it below the reel seat? this is actually a very easy fix.

After reading the post about a rod building article in the Florida Sportsman I went out and picked up a copy. Turns out it didn't have a rod building article but since it was Novembers edition I called up my dad who subscribes and he said he got a new copy this morning. After driving down to my parents and having to talk to them for a couple hours I picked up December's copy and again no article?

I have the original one with the two wheels on the left side, usually I don't even use the second wheel. You might want to look into getting their new single wheel version and save some $$$.

Tried a test wrap , but rushed it so much that it turned into a gooey mess. From what I could tell the wrap without CP was difficult to see the tiger wrap so I decided to use CP it came out great. I'll post some pics when I get the chance.

Like you said there is some predictability with black since it doesn't need CP. I already have it wrapped with the green, just trying to decide to put CP over it. I'm doing it on one of the Mudhole camo blanks and want to match all the colors in the camo. That's why I want to do the dark green over the CP'd green, just don't want to have the tan bleed thru the top green.

I'm doing a tiger wrap with a tan and green base that I put color preserver on. I want to use the same green on top but want it to be a bit darker. If I don't use CP on top will the tan underneath bleed thru the top layer?? Yes, I know I could do a test but I'm trying to get this done and a test would take me a couple days.

Billy, you are a big influence on these boards and you talk highly of GUSA. They are great blanks and what I use almost exclusively, @#$%& I picked up the B83M when I read the Mudhole post, BUT, maybe they are expediting your orders because of how you talk them up and the pull you have on these boards. I personally like their colored blanks and have noticed the wait time getting longer and longer

First thing I do when building a rod is put the reel I'm going to use on the reel seat and slide it down the blank. I'll then simulate casting, fighting, etc and when I find a length I like mark the blank where the bottom of the reel seat. The distance from the bottom of the reel seat to the butt end of the rod is the length of my rear grip, do the same for the fore grip. I think this step is what
