Mike, I don't really know how to be honest, but if you'll give me a quick run at it, I'll give it a try in the next few days. I don't have the "quality" camera to get really good pics, mine always look just "there", but I'm willing to try. DR

Jim, I just built one. Mine will be used for Carolina rigging and Muskies. I used a StCroix IV Carolina Riggin 1+1 Pics are here: or go to the Rod Building area on my site in my signature. I used Pac Bay's Illusion guides with Tich chrome feet and made the blank a permament one piece. DR

Al, Flexcoat worked for me about 50% of the time, the other 50% it just refused to dry completely. I know everyone will say "you didn't mix it right" and thats ok, because in many instances with people this may be true. I bought and used flexcoat syringes to measure and mixed/folded over 3 minutes everytime. Sometimes it worked, other times it just never dried to my likeing. I set

I've never used Decal Connection, but heard so many good things that I decided to give them a run. The feller that I spoke to several times on the horn was simply professional, and an out right joy to do business with. I sent-email-him some really special items yesterday (Sunday) and he ALREADY has my order on it's way to me BEFORE 2pm Monday......will I use Decal Connection again....EVERYTIM

Billy, I can surely make one, but I didn't really want to make 3, each having a differing background color (light, med, dark) I merely wondered if someone had did all that homework and maybe saved it, seems valueable to me.......... DR

Has anyone taken all the thread colors and made a chart , so to speak , of each thread color with epoxy: one with CP to show the true color , and one along side it without CP to show the darker NCP color?.........guess background color would play in the mix as well...hummm? DR

Clyde, NOT using color preserver (CP) gives that see-through look your looking for, just keep in mind the thread colors will darken without CP QUITE a bit. DR

They ARE hard to work with....I have two almost ready for them. My last one I used a knife to lift the corner, and only touched the edges to hold it...... it did well but wasn't easy :) DR

Whats wrong with the stick of "guide foot adhesive" that you warm up with a lighter, add a touch to the foot bottom, warm again, remove access, heat again (if allowed to cool) and stick them in place-wrap, done? Takes 15 seconds per guide at the most? DR

I have several of my own/family rods that are wrapped in total metallic, not ONE problem! Only thing I dis-like about most metallics are the fact that they are hard to work with and sometimes the foil finish will strip off as you're wrapping-especially if you like using a lot of tension-and you have to start over on that area. If you treat the thread like it's a "foil over nylon"

Time and practice is all that's needed. With that, if you decide to re-wrap a guide that you haven't epoxyed yet, they'll be hard to get to unwrap! DR

Steve, Your email is hidden, send me one if you like, and would really like to know. On subject..... I really wouldn't mind buying from several company's, I just detest the shipping charges from them all. Profit is hard enough to make when doing a build, throwing more of it away in shipping charges just ruffles the frugle me :) DR

Matt, I was wondering if it had became a "normal" occurance to have so many returns. :( I had one flipping stick that not only came in as a 1+1 blank when it was suspose to be a 1 piece, but it was scratched all to pieces from the sliding extra piece and chipped at the top of the sliding piece. Then came these today.......... And the backordering.......Something as simple as a

Tom, Add all the parasites at Smith Mountian Lake that killed ALL the adult striped bass and are moving into the LMouth so I hear. Smallies are EAT UP in ALL Va waters with the "yellow grub" parasites so bad it's killing them, these lodge into the fish's meat and thrive..........I'm in VA.........don't get me started :) DR

What percentage of rod blanks do you order that have to be returned for one reason or another? One I received today was a quality blank that looked so bad it wasn't funny. I can't believe they would bag a rod that looked this bad. The blank looked sanded with about 400grit and less than 1/2 way rubbed out at BEST, it wasn't even uniform. If you ran your hand down the blank it felt like a road

Keith, The grinding is done to make the guide foot THINNER not shorter. Being thin does several things: allows flex in the guide foot to bend with the rod allows for nice thread wrappings ease of getting wrappings up onto the guide foot and maybe some more I cant think of DR

Three does very well...... I never sand and buff or recoat. Only exception may be when you do a "laminated" stock. These will shrink down over time and need to be "block sanded" to make them straight again, then just recoat with 2-3 more after the shrinking (usually takes several days to shrink, or you can speed it up by sitting it in the sun or baking it).
