Eugene, are you making fishing rods? or just trying to do some form of scientific study?

Bill, if the thread is fully saturated with the first coat, why when it is still wet, put on a second coat? You wont be able to saturate it anymore if it was thoroughly saturated to begin with.. I put on second and third coats if necessary to ensure no trapped air and it will give a more even build with the finish. JMHO.

Over 40 years of using CP of all mfg's. I apply it as follows: and have seldom had a problem. Use a good brush, I use a white nylon artists brush of the size appropriate for the length of wrap I wish to coat. Give a good soaking coat of the CP so that it saturates all of the thread. I start and the butt and work towards the tip. When all guides have been soaked, I wipe the brush off and go b

I don't believe I said any particular person was telling him he could not do it his way or that he can not do something. Just wanting him to know there are more than one way to skin a cat!!

I have turned all my grips on the blank for over 40 years and never had a problem. I have made hand reamers from 1/4' to 3/4' that should be inch and have reamed a 1/4" hole to 5/8" easily. I have a great set of carbide burrs that I can chuck in the lathe and change them out to ream anything, including wood. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something!! They are wrong!!

You don't need to torch or use flame at all, a couple of goose neck lamps or a heat box and you don't need to put heat on the wraps themselves. Not one factory rod is made by using a torch, lighter, or alcohol lamp!! Just a warm place to rotate the rod while the finish cures.

The blank does not throw the line the same way every time, it can't. Only the caster can ATTEMPT to throw the line the same way every time. If that were possible, there wouldn't be any bad casts. Forget this tracking nonsense.

From my 1988 Sage blank catalog Lists the GSH 390B as Med. Lt 1/4- 1 0z. 6-20# line, Sug. retail $142.00 If I remember correctly the other blank is an 8.5' S-glass blank for salmon fishing. I believe I had a customer who ordered 6 of them and had me cut 3" off the butt so they would fit in his under gunnel rod holders. I believe this to be the case with your blank since there is no G

The 3M, Scientific Anglers blanks were made with a ferrule that has the male portion epoxied into the tip section, and the female ferrule epoxied into the butt section, these were made in the mid 70's to mid 80's. I still have several NOS blanks. I made many of them back then and the 7' light spinning blank was a favorite. I have 3 customers who are still fishing the ones I made for them. Gre

Just where in the cast are you experiencing "slack"? Are you casting a fixed amount of line, shooting line or what? I don't quite understand your question.

I believe I would try a powder dye, and mix it with acetone, then when at the right consistency mix that with the rod bond, just make sure it doesn't make the rod bond too thin for what you want to do. Probably wont be a problem since rod bond is so thick to begin with.

I once had a customer who wanted rods built on an 8'6" blank, but he was only able to fit an 8'3" rod in his under gunnel rod holders. Unless you have a situation like this don't mess with the length of the rod. Is it tip over butt, or spigot? If spigot how much of the spigot is showing between the two sections. Should be 1/2" to 3/8". Two inches is too much and the blank

I always charged at least double the cost of the components. If someone wanted say a fish wrap on the rod that took me 6 hours to do, I would charge accordingly. Fancy wood in the grip, the same, it takes time and effort to turn wood on the lathe. Don't try to compete with factory rods, not possible unless you want to go broke. I once a the lowest price distributor cost on blanks that I bough

If you have older Fenwick or Lamiglas blanks fro the 70's or 80's, I may be able to give you the info on them.

Are you sure the rod was not wrapped with two different spools of thread, I have never seen a spool that had 18" of orange and 8" of black. Most of the variegated spools have equal amounts of orange and black twisted together.

With Lamiglas and Fenwick, they published information that would let you find out what blank was used for a specific rod. Most other companies did not do this. Too bad. They should have if they sold blanks.

Just looking at the picture, it looks to me that the upper section shown has evidence of being crushed.. I don't recall ever seeing a fly rod broken at that point on the blank without having been damaged before it broke.

Herb, when I was involved with testing all of Ralph O'Quinns finishes for him, we made a rod that had no wraps at all, just perma gloss over the guide feet. It cast and fished very well indeed!!

Herb, I have been using Perma Gloss since before it had a name. It is the most durable finish that you will ever find.

I use Perma Gloss on lighter rods, and epoxy on rods over 6-7 weight. If you wish you can always put on thin coats of epoxy. Just try to avoid a football shaped finish on your wraps.

What color is it, I am not going to check the bottom of every spool of thread, If I know the color then I can check those.

Custom means you made it for someone for a specific purpose to their wants and needs, otherwise it is just another off the shelf rod.

I have used aircraft cable pulley wheels for years. Check with some aircraft supply stores. I was lucky and found mine at the Boeing surplus store about 35 miles from where I live.

With all of the rods I have built, I never once was concerned about a balance point. Too many variables such as lure weight, reel weight, , etc. etc. I have never added weight to any rod grip, never have seen the need for it. JMO If you are worried about fatigue, adding weight, it would seem to me to just add to the fatigue.
